Constance Halaveli epitomizes the tropical island vacation. A private expanse of beach studded with oversize bean bags? Check. An on-site PADI dive center and easy access to shipwrecks, caves and coral reefs teeming with whale sharks and manta rays? Double check. There’s a heavy focus on the alfresco, with outdoor dining and villas that have wooden balconies with steps that descend straight into the ocean. It’s a magnet for the honeymoon crowd, to be sure, but this upscale resort also caters to travelers with tots in tow.
Bed and Bath
The resort’s 86 villas, whose design is inspired by traditional dhoni fishing boats, combine chic tropical decor and cutting-edge technology: iPods, mini iMacs, free WiFi and plasma televisions. Choose from Water Villas, from which you can peer into the crystal-clear water over your morning cuppa; standard Beach Villas, which have private plunge pools; and, for larger groups who need more elbow room, Family Beach Villas or Double Story Beach Villas.
The resort has an overwater spa, where the treatments make use of handcrafted Ila, Valmont and signature Spa de Constance products; and a fitness center and tennis courts where type A vacationers can squeeze in their daily workout. There’s a pool, of course, and three restaurants to choose from. Jahaz offers a full buffet spread, while the beachside grill, Meeru, makes it possible to have your sundowner with your toes in the sand. The last, the specialty Asian-inspired restaurant Jing, sits on stilts above the lagoon and has one of the most comprehensive wine cellars in the Indian Ocean.
How to Get There
Spent 1 week here : the water villa is great (though the decoration is unremarkable), with the pool as well as the access to the sea with a flight of stairs. The bed was too firm, not comfortable if you sleep on your side. No issues with privacy on the terrace nor shower.
Overall the food buffet was amazing (only tried Jahaz the main restaurant), with the exception of desserts and morning pastries which are dry, but it is a weak point in many places in the world, and I had more than enough with all the salty food and fruits.
Staff was friendly with several nice activities (paddle boarding, snorkeling with the turtles, jet ski...)
Drawback/ things to be improved :
- you should ban smoking at the restaurant (on the beach). Why not if some people want to ruin their health while they are on their own, but at the restaurant, the tables are close to each other. I found it really disgusting and it bothered me. Getting other people’s cigarette smoke in the face you are dining is not acceptable in such a high end place.
- not a big deal because otherwise the food is great, but desserts and pastries like croissants are not very good, same for the snack with in villa dining
- bed mattress a bit too hard
- it’s already been said, but a bit too many things are “extra” to be paid (eg water during dinner). When your reservation already includes breakfast and diner, I think it is normal alcohol or sparkling water are extra, but still water should be included
We had high expectations for our first visit to the Maldives and Constance Halaveli more than exceeded them. If you are interested in food, and especially wine, we can't imagine a better place to holiday. The four-strong team of sommeliers (led by the lovely Satia) has a winning combination of knowledge, passion and almost child-like enthusiasm for wine. The all-inclusive package offers a choice of 120 wines, many of which are superb bottles so you will never be stuck for something really interesting to drink. However, if you want to splash out, the Halaveli cellars contain many top flight bottles too. The kitchen team is also incredibly passionate and creative, and the overall quality of the food we ate was excellent. The service in general on the island is second to none with every member of staff offering a smile and a friendly greeting whenever you see them, and also genuinely trying to help out with any little problem you may have - usually our children losing an item of clothing! There is a decent gym, a tennis court (balls and racquets provided though they could actually do with renewing), and a table tennis table. The snorkelling around the island is great and you don't need to take masks/flippers as they are provided FOC and are perfectly decent. In terms of practicalities such as footwear, you could go barefoot for the entire time, but flat sandals and flipflops are really useful - we were given flip-flops in our villa, as well as a very handy Halaveli beach bag.The kids club is great for younger kids with lovely staff who work very hard to keep the kids happy and busy - our 8 year old son had fun as there were other kids of his age but our 11 year old daughter was a bit old for what was on offer. Again though, the staff did everything they could to help out and arranged for her to have a private 2 x 2 hour session manicure and pedicure course at the spa which was amazing and free of charge. The tennis coach Alena is fantastic, as is the yoga instructor Bianca. My only tiny moan was that group yoga is charged (around $30 per 40 mins incl taxes). I would have done a group session every day if it had been included but I really felt it was too expensive to do every day. There was one complimentary session! We all came away saying it had been our best holiday ever and really not wanting to leave. We'd love to go back, it really is like stepping into paradise.
We went to Halaveli for second time and we returned back home yesterday. The first thing I did was that I booked it again for 2020. It is so hard to leave the place and go back to hustle bustle of everyday life :)
Well, azzure ocean, baby sharks, soft white sand, palms an ideal playground for kids as well. We always use a beach villa, I think that is much better then overwater bungalow because you have the beach, ocean and palm trees only for yourselves. Villas are spacious with private pool and with a separate room for kids. The ocean is mere 4 metres from villa and with shallow, crystal clear water an ideal place for family holiday. Villas 30-22 are facing the main jetty and are very good for sunset viewing 20-1 are more quiet and better for sunrise. We prefer 25-22 somewhere there.
The small island has a hidden jewel, a small meditation garden with the best iced tea on Earth. Our two children loved that place and enjoyed its serenity.
I would like to thank Constance staff in Male who escorted us to our flight home all the way to counter. Extremely polite and helpful and made even the transfers worthwhile.
I think the fact that we are coming again speaks for itself and Constance Halaveli is place to unwind, throw away the rush and problems and simply soak in natural beauty. Thank you Constance!
We were fortunate enough to stay at Constance Halaveli for 10 nights a third time in February/March 2019 after 2014 and 2010.
What you should know at first, dear reader, is that the staff makes all the difference on Halaveli. That's why it is so good and highly rated on this platform. Deservedly so.
In this review I'd like to point out a few things - positive and negative - that are somehow different than the last couple of times we stayed at Halaveli.
Food: They really upped the game there! We usually ate at the buffet restaurant. It was fantastic! There is a new outlet for sushi during limited hours. In-Villa dining is absolutely great, maybe a little too good :-)
Service: Is as good as ever. More efficient though in my opinion!
Facilities: Though certain parts - especially when exposed to the elements - are starting to show some age, everything is well maintained. I noticed the tennis court with a new(ish) surface, replaced sun loungers and umbrellas and other furniture in the main pool and Jahaz bar areas. Also they added some nice little tricks here and there like the oversized chess boards, chill-out areas with free help-yourself iced tea or hanging loungers.
Villas: We got assigned a lagoon-side family beach villa. This one has an added small room with bunk beds for two kids, own AC and TV set. It's very nice considering that it was an afterthought. That separate AC though, has a very loud external unit. Furniture used outside (loungers, chairs) must have been replaced not too long ago. What they should have done is replacing the outside tables as well because they're starting to look a little nasty here and there. Not because of neglicence but mistreatment by guests over time. We noticed a rather large number of ants crawling around on the sun deck and the loungers at the beach. But we guess that's just nature the way it is. Nothing in the villas though, We'd like to point out!
Housekeeping: Spotless, efficient and with very personal service from your villa host!
Staff: The staff is extremely engaged, friendly and always greets with a smile. We noticed the gardeners and engineering staff smiled the most. The management really does a very good job recruiting and training their personnel.
Guest structure: There were many families with children at the time we were staying on the island. The resort cares very well for the young guests. In our opinion this is a clear strong point of the resort, even stronger than in the years before.
Concluding this review I'd like to thank our villa host Waheed for his excellent service as well as the restaurant manager of Jahaz, Mr Rasheed! It's because of people like them we're going to come back, without a doubt!
Furthermore we would like to thank the resort for the possibility to check out late, it meant the world to us!

Not easy to run a 5* resort in the middle of the ocean and yet Dominic, the General Manager, really succeeded. Outstanding level of product, courteous staff and a stunning location make it great to spend (at least) a week at the Halaveli. There is a good range of activities but I personally encourage to simply... gaze at the beauty of nature! It was my first time with Constance, but - if this is standard - definitely not the last!
