As intimate as it is compact, the island of Baros is a classic Maldives idyll that combines sugar-white sand, palm-shaded grounds and a sparkling lagoon. One of the first luxury resorts to open in the Maldives, Baros has been attracting sunseekers since the early 1970s, and keeps them returning thanks to its contemporary thatch-roofed villas, three top-notch restaurants and its impossibly romantic overwater deck, perfect for candlelit dinners, yoga sessions and couples massages.
Bed and Bath
The Deluxe Villas are set in thick tropical vegetation and feel completely private. The contemporary interiors are done in earth tones, with polished wooden floors and rattan furniture, and all offer shaded verandas with deck chairs and umbrellas and direct access to the beach. Cool off in the outdoor shower; the sandstone bathrooms overlook a secluded garden. The Water Pool Villas are spread out over 1,356 square feet and come with a private ladder leading directly to the calm lagoon. If that’s too taxing, the villas also feature a spacious deck with a private plunge pool. Each Villa has a dedicated Villa Host to assist with room service requests and excursions.
The two-story Lighthouse offers nearly 360-degree views of the ocean and serves international dishes on the ground floor and cocktails on the second-floor terrace. Dine on International cuisine at Lime restaurant, or combine seafood and steaks at the Cayenne Grill. Sink your toes in the sand at Sails Bar, which is located beneath a grove of palm trees. Couples massages are available at the resort’s spa, which is also equipped with an air-conditioned yoga pavilion where classes are offered. Don a face mask and flippers and explore the house reef, which is home to a colorful array of fish and the occasional sting ray.
In the Area
Besides the lively house reef, nearby sites include the wreck of the Maldive Victory and Banana Reef, one of the country’s first dive locations to be discovered. A half-day cultural excursion to Malé, is a must for a glimpse into the country’s Islamic history; pay a visit to the gold-topped Grand Friday Mosque and the ancient Old Friday Mosque. For a romantic meal, book a sandbank dinner: The resort’s chefs will prepare and serve a private dinner for two surrounded by the ocean and the setting sun. A sunset dhoni cruise (including canapés and champagne) is a great way to further explore the North Malé Atoll.
How to Get There
If we could rate this place higher than five stars we would. Simply exceptional. From the moment you are whisked away from the airport by speedboat, to your departure back. The overwater villa was amazing, the breakfasts are full of variety, the gym is well equipped. We love the night snorkelling, the exceptional cuisine and the peaceful nature of the island. I loved the cakes in our room every evening, the Baros speciality cocktails and the stunning sunsets. Then there’s the service... everyone is well trained, local and genuinely happy to be working at Baros. Thank you Azzam and all the wonderful staff. It’s refreshing to see this island is locally run and owned. It adds to the experience to hear about the culture. Overall, brilliant. Did not disappoint in any way and exceeded our expectations. We will be back.... as soon as we can! Thanks Baros team!
One of the most exhilarating, peaceful and picturesque places to visit. Amazing food whether it is the buffet or the special meals, fishing, snorkelling, diving. Great entertainment and very relaxing.
While most people go to Baros for honeymoon or wedding anniversaries, I went there to simply enjoy a solo 7-day vacation (first week of September). So, for those who just want to take a break form their stressful job and just want to be by themselves, I highly recommend to go to Baros Island, in Maldives.
They waited for you at the airport right as you exit customs. They escort you in their jet boat to take you to the island: a very pleasant 20 min ride. From that moment on they will not take their eyes off of you until they return you to the airport and wish you a safe flight back home.
Once you arrive on the island, you are welcomed and pampered until you leave. My villa host, Mr. Hussain Azzam, was exceptional: always made sure I have everything I need, helped with booking various excursions and always checking on me.
The lagoon in front of my beach villa (#103) was a perfect place to swim and snorkel. At 5 am in the morning, I saw 5-7 black fin sharks (not to worry, they have no business with you), a variety of colorful fish and turtles. You will see so much more if you go on the snorkeling safari. The Marine Center personnel were extremely knowledgeable, friendly and just simply a blast to spend time with them while snorkeling out in the ocean.
Must take the dolphin trip in the afternoon! It is absolutely amazing!!
Now lets talk about the food. Breakfast, all that your heart and eyes desires is there in front of you. Everyday it was prepared with great care and attention to details: a divine combination of meats, vegetables, pastry, sushi, fruits, juices, omelets and so much more. For lunch and dinner, a wide range of innovative dishes that always left me full and yet still wanting more.
There is an art behind running a 5-star resort and Baros Island and its staff has master it. They offer you a perfect balance of luxury and simplicity, entertainment and privacy all in the midst of the most beautiful place on earth.
