As intimate as it is compact, the island of Baros is a classic Maldives idyll that combines sugar-white sand, palm-shaded grounds and a sparkling lagoon. One of the first luxury resorts to open in the Maldives, Baros has been attracting sunseekers since the early 1970s, and keeps them returning thanks to its contemporary thatch-roofed villas, three top-notch restaurants and its impossibly romantic overwater deck, perfect for candlelit dinners, yoga sessions and couples massages.
Bed and Bath
The Deluxe Villas are set in thick tropical vegetation and feel completely private. The contemporary interiors are done in earth tones, with polished wooden floors and rattan furniture, and all offer shaded verandas with deck chairs and umbrellas and direct access to the beach. Cool off in the outdoor shower; the sandstone bathrooms overlook a secluded garden. The Water Pool Villas are spread out over 1,356 square feet and come with a private ladder leading directly to the calm lagoon. If that’s too taxing, the villas also feature a spacious deck with a private plunge pool. Each Villa has a dedicated Villa Host to assist with room service requests and excursions.
The two-story Lighthouse offers nearly 360-degree views of the ocean and serves international dishes on the ground floor and cocktails on the second-floor terrace. Dine on International cuisine at Lime restaurant, or combine seafood and steaks at the Cayenne Grill. Sink your toes in the sand at Sails Bar, which is located beneath a grove of palm trees. Couples massages are available at the resort’s spa, which is also equipped with an air-conditioned yoga pavilion where classes are offered. Don a face mask and flippers and explore the house reef, which is home to a colorful array of fish and the occasional sting ray.
In the Area
Besides the lively house reef, nearby sites include the wreck of the Maldive Victory and Banana Reef, one of the country’s first dive locations to be discovered. A half-day cultural excursion to Malé, is a must for a glimpse into the country’s Islamic history; pay a visit to the gold-topped Grand Friday Mosque and the ancient Old Friday Mosque. For a romantic meal, book a sandbank dinner: The resort’s chefs will prepare and serve a private dinner for two surrounded by the ocean and the setting sun. A sunset dhoni cruise (including canapés and champagne) is a great way to further explore the North Malé Atoll.
How to Get There
We travelled to Baros after a 2 week tour of Sri Lanka. From arrival to departure we couldn't wish for better service.
The island is in a beautiful setting with clear blue water surrounding it. The snorkelling was fantastic (for a novice). All of the staff are always smiling - Moosa was great from the moment we met until our departure.
Our villa was very spacious and well equipped. We had our own private swimming pool and beach area down to the Indian Ocean.
The food was excellent, especially breakfast which was probably the best selection I have ever experienced anywhere.
We will be back soon. Thank you for looking after us. WOW
Everything! It is a piece of heaven on Earth! The island is very small and that what makes it very relaxing and romantic. The island is beautiful and very well maintained; the rooms are very clean and comfortable; we stayed in the water villa and Baros residence, one night each. The food at all their restaurants is fantastic. The service is excellent everywhere you go on their resort island, staff always smiling to the guests
This was our third trip to Baros and whilst we were looking forward to it very much there was also the thought that maybe it wouldn't measure up to our fond memories. We needn't have worried, the management and staff work incredibly hard to ensure everything works to deliver you the holiday you want and they are constantly aspiring to give you a great experience, be that in the restaurants, spa, bars or at your villa. Our villa host was Zoro who was just fantastic, he was attentive but unobtrusive which was just right for us, as it was my husband's birthday and our wedding anniversary whilst we were there, he organised several treats for us that was so thoughtful and considerate, this sort of thing really does make guests feel special and valued. Our villa attendant Hameed was similarly considerate and kept our room pristine. This destination truly is a place where they want you to feel like it is home and every member of the team we encountered have smiles for the guests and want to deliver service excellence. There are always plenty of managers around checking that you are being looked after, and not in an oppressive way but available and visible for guests. Our trip to the spa was fabulous, the ambience and service is luxurious and very tranquil, you really do feel very pampered and special - a great way to unwind after a long flight. If you are looking for a beautiful location that delivers luxury in an understated and attentive way this is the place for you. It is very unusual for us to revisit this type of destination so many times, but it is so special here that I suspect visit number four could be on the horizon.
I have been double charge during my recent booking in baros (booking no:416518371). I realize this issue by looking at my credit card transaction. When i report these to the reservation team. They had directed me to the finance team. But its really disappointed me by the way they handle the issue. I keep on receive the reply (from Nishanta, income auditor) that they are still waiting for verification and reply from the bank. Meanwhile from my site, i try to contact with my merchant to solve this issue. When i already disputed, then only baros have refund me the same amount (it takes more than a week). And i didnt get any information or updates regading the refund. Its all base on my transaction details in credit card. Imagine if im just doing the payment without checking the amount. Shouldnt it would be double the amount that i should pay? Another things is im booking for only bed and breakfast package. When i arrive there, i have been told that i would have my dinner. I keep reminding Yulia( person in charge) that what im book is only for bed and breakfast package. But she insist that we would have free dinner as it is for our halfboard booking. Without hesitate we went to have dinner that night. During my breakfast next day, Yulia approach me by saying that it is a miscommunication and line problem which makes my booking confused (from bed and breakfast to halfboard)? But worry not because the amount of our dinner is quite cheap ( cost of 200++$) which not consider really cheap for me. How can this happen at 5 star hotel. The first thing regarding my double charge issue is already dissapoint me and now come to the second part which is miscommunication regarding my booking. Its totally doesnt make sense that a 5 star hotel was handling this issue like non proffesional team. I hope this issue wont happen to other future customer (as its involve trust issue among customer). I did enjoy the ambiance in Baros. But to consider again the whole experience. I think Baros need to do a huge improvement regarding the management and customer service.
Just came back after a 6 nights stay (water villa) end of november,
For our first time to the Maldives I believe that we cannot expect more, it was a pure paradise.
As I cannot compare to other resorts in the maldives I will resume the main highlights and try to provide some personal & general tips :
- resort is located less than 30 min distance to the airport via boat transfer, this is very convenient :no need to coordinate a seaplane transfer, not depending on the weather and arrival/departure time. For us it was perfect the last day we left the resort at 21:00 (last sea plane max till 17:00)
- Maldives is an expensive destination, as a true 5* high rated hotel Baros keep that tag price very very high.
I recommend to take the half board (as you rely completely on the resort for everything and again its expensive) .
How much expensive? few examples: spa for couple ~440usd , cheapest wine ~55usd , late check out 150usd, refreshing dive ~140usd etc'
In fact it was from my side the only "negative" point.
- The snorkelling is outstanding! Baros has an amazing reef with a great marine life.
just going down few steps from our water villa to meet sea turtles, reef sharks, baby sharks... I also got the opportunity to see an eagle spotted ray .
Diving is also great but personally with all the amazing reef just 2 meters below you can see everything while snorkelling.
-Facilities and accommodation:
Our water villa was great, spacious and modern, the highlight was again the stairs directly to the reef.
Fitness room was small but well equipped and good enough to have a nice training.
Food was very tasty especially the lighthouse restaurant -a must try- we tried also the asian buffet at the Cayenne grill. Having the half board will provide you 45% discount on the cayenne and lighthouse restaurants (just the Lime restaurant is completely included).
Complete privacy and quiet , even with more than 80% occupancy we felt completely alone and fully relaxed.
-Staff and management
Well we went already in several 5*delux hotels but the Baros experience is something else, it's the kind of resorts that invite all his guests (weekly) to a cocktail party with plenty of alcohol.
special thanks to :
Asim our guest house that take care of us the entire stay (no need to call the reception)
Hussain our villa attendant that make our villa super clean twice a day and even more if just we asked for.
Ambra from the dive center for the tough dive and professionalism -thanks again for the octopus :)
Nathan from the marine center for the impressive night snorkelling and great marine night life presentation.
To make that long story short, if you can afford it dont hesitate... you cant go wrong with Baros
* special thanks to Peter from maldivesoffer agency that found for us a perfect deal (was the cheapest option by far and it was a real pleasure to deal with him)
