As intimate as it is compact, the island of Baros is a classic Maldives idyll that combines sugar-white sand, palm-shaded grounds and a sparkling lagoon. One of the first luxury resorts to open in the Maldives, Baros has been attracting sunseekers since the early 1970s, and keeps them returning thanks to its contemporary thatch-roofed villas, three top-notch restaurants and its impossibly romantic overwater deck, perfect for candlelit dinners, yoga sessions and couples massages.
Bed and Bath
The Deluxe Villas are set in thick tropical vegetation and feel completely private. The contemporary interiors are done in earth tones, with polished wooden floors and rattan furniture, and all offer shaded verandas with deck chairs and umbrellas and direct access to the beach. Cool off in the outdoor shower; the sandstone bathrooms overlook a secluded garden. The Water Pool Villas are spread out over 1,356 square feet and come with a private ladder leading directly to the calm lagoon. If that’s too taxing, the villas also feature a spacious deck with a private plunge pool. Each Villa has a dedicated Villa Host to assist with room service requests and excursions.
The two-story Lighthouse offers nearly 360-degree views of the ocean and serves international dishes on the ground floor and cocktails on the second-floor terrace. Dine on International cuisine at Lime restaurant, or combine seafood and steaks at the Cayenne Grill. Sink your toes in the sand at Sails Bar, which is located beneath a grove of palm trees. Couples massages are available at the resort’s spa, which is also equipped with an air-conditioned yoga pavilion where classes are offered. Don a face mask and flippers and explore the house reef, which is home to a colorful array of fish and the occasional sting ray.
In the Area
Besides the lively house reef, nearby sites include the wreck of the Maldive Victory and Banana Reef, one of the country’s first dive locations to be discovered. A half-day cultural excursion to Malé, is a must for a glimpse into the country’s Islamic history; pay a visit to the gold-topped Grand Friday Mosque and the ancient Old Friday Mosque. For a romantic meal, book a sandbank dinner: The resort’s chefs will prepare and serve a private dinner for two surrounded by the ocean and the setting sun. A sunset dhoni cruise (including canapés and champagne) is a great way to further explore the North Malé Atoll.
How to Get There
Definitely the best resort I have visited! Jay and his team of professional yet friendly staff looked after us in a remarkable way.
Every aspect of hospitality and luxury has been thought of, and we've had an extremely relaxing time, from airport pickup right up to the point where we got dropped off at Hulumale!
Our villa host, Jay took care of all of our special needs, requests and questions! Hardy, Mustafa and the ex sous chef Bhavi (to mention a few of the team that goes above and beyond) and the airport host (I forgot his name) were all focusing on hospitality at a level which is out of this world!
The water villa was fascinating , and the views breathtaking! I would highly recommend their BBQ dinner and of course the snorkelling experience. Their house reef offers an amazing view of corals and fish!
Getting to Baros from the airport takes just over 20 minutes by speedboat. I would highly recommend it to both honeymooners and people who are looking for relaxation (try to keep your laptop and work email access at home, like how I did it, and you can truly "switch off")
A heartfelt thank you to Dr Maniku, Jay and his team for this amazing holiday!
Why you’re still debating on wether to book here is beyond me?! From beginning to end (and what a sad day the end is) you are truly treated the best...dare I say like royalty! the whole entire team and the island itself welcomes you with a heartfelt and warmfelt (pun intended) Maldivian embrace! The suite.. goodness, it’s incredible and better than the best pictures! The food.. goodness, it’s absolutely delicious and the island.. goodness, it’s beyond postcard beautiful and it doesn’t even try hard... it’s natural and the resort embraces this so the island and Baros blend in and out of each other seamlessly. Stay here!! Fall in love with the people and the place...

This was our third trip to Baros, and the best yet! Simply a magnificent resort, everything we could wish for and more. Villas are spectacular, beautifully laid out, comfortable, roomy and very clean. All facilities are similarly faultless, and the snorkelling on the house reef wonderful. We thought the coral had improved since our last visit, and the fish, turtles and sharks so amazing and easy to view.
We had beautiful meals, as always, and again thought that the food was even better than we remembered.
Thank you to all the staff at Baros, most particularly to Azzam, our amazing villa host, who took care of our every need. We will be back!
Everything from the location to the room to the service was sheer perfection. The food was also excellent and consistently excellent as well.
I can't say enough great things about this place. The only potential negative is that the price is very steep... and I feel they can really overcharge on the food sometimes.
This was our first visit to Baros and the Maldives, but it won’t be our last. If you’re looking for romance, understated luxury, exemplary customer service from every employee, incredible beauty both above and below the water, amazing food, I could go on, then Baros is for you.
My wife and I recently spent nine nights at Baros to celebrate our 35th anniversary and from stepping off the plane to being personally escorted through securityThe to the ticket counter at the airport, the staff all touched us with some sort of magic that transports you to a place you never want to leave. My wife cried at the candlelit beachfront private dinner, which was made even more special when executive chef Bhavi surprised us with the most incredible off-menu ceviche, and chef Chaminda presented her with packages of fresh curry leaves to imbue our home cooking with memories of Baros. The topper to the evening was a beautiful flower decoration on our bed to commemorate the day and a bath drawn with decorated with flowers as well. Many thanks to Hassan!
Our over water villa was pristine, with unobstructed views of the ocean and easy access to the lagoon and reef beyond. The reef surrounding the island has come back from recent bleaching, as the marine center staff’s focus on coral regeneration is evident. The dive staff goes out of their way to ensure you’re comfortable and get the most out of every dive. Special thanks to Iku, Ali, and Ahmed who were fantastic dive guides.
The food at all three restaurants is delicious with dinner at the Lighthouse truly something special. The freshness of the fish is sublime and the lobster bisque to die for. We always looked forward to breakfast at Lime, particularly Bashti’s smiling face and whose passion for fruit (dad joke) introduced us to a myriad of fruits from around the world.
We can’t forget our host Sam, who took care of our every need, and truly became a friend. He went out of his way to ensure my wife’s swimmer’s ear was resolved and even took it upon himself to find a missing earring during a downpour at the Taste of the Maldives beach buffet.
We’ll never forget the sunsets from the Lighthouse bar, a pre-dinner ritual of drinks and hors d'oeuvres watching the sky turn a myriad of colors only matched by the beauty of the turquoise water, and made even more special by Niken’s infectious smile and attentive service.
We hope Baros never changes and we will definitely return.
