Overview

Private island idyll with overwater villas, a house reef and three top-notch restaurants

The Look

As intimate as it is compact, the island of Baros is a classic Maldives idyll that combines sugar-white sand, palm-shaded grounds and a sparkling lagoon. One of the first luxury resorts to open in the Maldives, Baros has been attracting sunseekers since the early 1970s, and keeps them returning thanks to its contemporary thatch-roofed villas, three top-notch restaurants and its impossibly romantic overwater deck, perfect for candlelit dinners, yoga sessions and couples massages.

Bed and Bath

The Deluxe Villas are set in thick tropical vegetation and feel completely private. The contemporary interiors are done in earth tones, with polished wooden floors and rattan furniture, and all offer shaded verandas with deck chairs and umbrellas and direct access to the beach. Cool off in the outdoor shower; the sandstone bathrooms overlook a secluded garden. The Water Pool Villas are spread out over 1,356 square feet and come with a private ladder leading directly to the calm lagoon. If that’s too taxing, the villas also feature a spacious deck with a private plunge pool. Each Villa has a dedicated Villa Host to assist with room service requests and excursions.

Beyond

The two-story Lighthouse offers nearly 360-degree views of the ocean and serves international dishes on the ground floor and cocktails on the second-floor terrace. Dine on International cuisine at Lime restaurant, or combine seafood and steaks at the Cayenne Grill. Sink your toes in the sand at Sails Bar, which is located beneath a grove of palm trees. Couples massages are available at the resort’s spa, which is also equipped with an air-conditioned yoga pavilion where classes are offered. Don a face mask and flippers and explore the house reef, which is home to a colorful array of fish and the occasional sting ray.

In the Area

Besides the lively house reef, nearby sites include the wreck of the Maldive Victory and Banana Reef, one of the country’s first dive locations to be discovered. A half-day cultural excursion to Malé, is a must for a glimpse into the country’s Islamic history; pay a visit to the gold-topped Grand Friday Mosque and the ancient Old Friday Mosque. For a romantic meal, book a sandbank dinner: The resort’s chefs will prepare and serve a private dinner for two surrounded by the ocean and the setting sun. A sunset dhoni cruise (including canapés and champagne) is a great way to further explore the North Malé Atoll.

The perfect paradise
Reviewed 1 day ago

We had been planning this holiday for over a year and wanted to go somewhere special as we had several celebrations; a big birthday, retirement and our wedding anniversary. After many visits to the Maldives, we thought we’d got it ‘out of our system.’ So, after a virtual trawl from the Far East to the Caribbean, we just kept coming back to the Maldives.

We had visited Baros four times before, the last being six years ago and thought it maybe was now out of our budget. However, after some great help and advice from Amit at Simply Maldives, we booked Baros, for twelve nights, as we loved it there so much in the past. We were so excited and spent months counting down the months, weeks and days.

From stepping out of the arrivals hall at the airport, everything was taken care of, bags were whisked away and magically appeared in our villa on arrival; speedboat to the island where we arrived less than 90 minutes after landing. No hanging around for seaplanes/domestic flights.

We were greeted like long lost friends by several staff who welcomed us warmly, dispensing cool towels and champagne. We were introduced to Zoro, our villa host who looked after us for our stay. He was so gentle, kind and polite and made sure we had everything to make our holiday perfect.

We had booked one of Baros’ entry level deluxe villas. It was spacious, light and had everything we needed. The bed was really comfortable and the pillows like clouds. We loved the outdoor bathroom, the terrace, daybed and little private garden down to the beach, a few metres to the sea. Additionally, there are a number of beach villas on the island, of various grades with pools and water villas with/without pools.

There are three restaurants, The Lighthouse for fine dining and sunset cocktails and canapés, Cayenne for grills, fish and meat and Lime for almost anything else, including the most amazing breakfast which includes hot food cooked to order and brought to your table and a hot/cold buffet with everything anyone could ever want, including Prosecco. Needless to say, we forced down a glass of Prosecco with our breakfast. Additionally, Sails bar does snacks at lunchtime.

We loved our leisurely breakfasts overlooking the sea, watching boats and guests come and go and fish swimming underneath us. The food in all restaurants was tasty and beautifully presented. Particular favourites were the lovely curries and fish cooked every way you could imagine. Murat the Executive Chef was very much in evidence and came and chatted to guests during all meal times. He even taught my husband, in a practical session, how to make perfect scrambled eggs.

Baros has a fabulous house reef, easily accessible from the beach, however, whilst we were there, it was unusually breezy and the sea was too choppy for me to snorkel outside the lagoon, but there was lots to see around the coral and rocks in the lagoon. We made several visits to the pool, which wasn’t there last time we visited.

During our stay we were offered a complementary visit to the piano deck at sunset, a five minute boat ride away, for champagne and canapés. It was a lovely experience watching the sun set over the sea and feeling like we were in the middle of the ocean.

The spa was amazing, wonderful ambience and great massages.

Although the island was almost full for most of our stay, it didn’t feel that way. Our days were spent reading, swimming, relaxing and enjoying a beautiful tropical island.

All the staff were fabulous, polite, friendly and attentive, without being obsequious. The senior team were very much in evidence, led by the manager, Jay, who greeted us at least twice a day and ensured everything was perfect. It was. There were so many lovely staff, but Vijay, Hardy,
Harisha, Shazeen, Shana, Abdullah, Hassan, Shijah, Zoro and Murat were those that we interacted most with. Thank you, you all made our holiday so special. It was perfect. We felt very emotional and sad as we were waved off on our homeward journey.

We have stayed in high class hotels all over the world, but Baros has something special - the staff - who genuinely care about making sure attention is paid to detail, so that guests have the best experience.

We had the most amazing holiday and are planning a return trip.

Beautiful place with the best culinary experience
Reviewed 4 days ago

Came here for 5 days for Valentine’s Day and stayed at the water pool villa which was a beauty !

weather was windy and water was choppy which was unusual for that time of the year. The staff and everything was amazing and the food ? Wow it was a culinary experience ! Not once did I dislike any part of the restaurant or food , everything you order is going to be good and the Maldivian buffet was probably my favourite as they cook most of the food on the buffet and you can choose your meat for curry and they cook it in front of you every thing was fresh in every restaurant and quality was top notch ! Lighthouse is a fine dining restaurant they have and the view for dinner there is amazing you sit quite close to the water so you could see a lot of fishes especially black tip sharks !

Didn’t manage to snorkel much but my boyfriend who went said he saw a lot of blacktip sharks oh and we went fishing and it was probably my favourite part of the trip ! You eat what you catch :) will definitely come back

Beach holiday for millionaires
Reviewed 5 days ago

My fiancé and I visited Baros for 4 nights prior to our trip to India. There are so many resorts to chose from in the Maldives and the main reason we chose Baros is for the house reef. On each snorkel we were able to see multiple shark, fish of all sizes, rays, and even a turtle!
We are from America and usually go on all inclusive beach vacations in Mexico and the Caribbean. With that being said, Baros is VERY EXPENSIVE. The typical guest at Baros seemed to be Europeans in their 50s or above and spent the day chugging water and reading books all day. Very different from what we are used to at Mexican/Caribbean all inclusives. If it weren’t for the snorkeling, the trip would have been pretty boring.
As for the food, the themed dinners put together by the hotel cost $134 PER PERSON, drinks not included... with food and drinks being so expensive, we found ourselves skipping meals...
The actual island itself is beautiful and the breakfast buffet amazing.
Would I come back? Maybe the day I become a millionaire!

The Legend that is Baros Island.
Reviewed 5 days ago

Somewhat later than planned indeed some three months later, we felt impelled to write a review for the visit we had in November 2018 having been there also in January 2018. We want to be upfront we are regular visitors to Baros and have always had excellent service and experiences.

The excuse is simple for not doing a review sooner , time and opportunity . The beautiful island that is Baros works hard to improve whilst keeping the legend of Baros. Keeping its essence of delivering top quality service is a constant having built this up on over many years of experience in offering the best that can be offered for a luxury island experience .Therefore we feel well placed to share our experiences and make comment on the Island and what it offers to the decernng traveller.

Like anything through time things can change , sometimes to the good and on other occasions things can take a backward step. Baros continually strives to improve on excellence from its excellent accommodation, with refurbishments and re styling, to the brand new Baros suits , to the restaurants, The Cayenne, Lime , and its iconic Lighthouse restaurant. It totally has and is achieving this, in all restaurants the food ha a taste for everyone is at the heart of its culinary offering ,with the food at top end of excellence.

Through the management team in all departments ,lead by Jay the General manager, service excellence, personal attention and total hospitality is at the essence of Baros Island. It’s fabric is well maintained to the highest standard of excellent ,from the gardens to the beaches,to the reef, quality prevails to continue to be the best in class offering the best experience to its customer.

Our stay in November at Baros was reflective of all the above with the addition of all the improvements that Jay and his senior management continue to implement driven by their vision of achieving the best stay in the Maldives which they are achieving daily,
with testimony of receiving yet again the awards that keep coming .

Of course this can not be achieved without the ever present support of all the staff which through Jay and his team have an enthusiasm for giving excellent personal service consistantly, no mean fete in its self.Thank you to all.

So finally a big thanks to all at Baros , I would urge those that read this first report the first I have other done , so go visit , see and enjoy and you will fully understand excellence, that is the legend of Baros Island. We have stayed at Baros some 10+ times over a 7 year period so feel we are qualified to make comment and share hopefully our experience, whether you are couples, honeymooners, individuals this is the place for you in Maldives.

So to the next time, go to Baros and enjoyable legend.
