How to Get There
My sister and I spent 6 days here to celebrate surviving a long year.
It’s quite a trip from Australia which included a nights stay in Singapore so prepare yourself for that if you’re traveling from Aus. We then took a sea plane to get to our resort. That was a first and we enjoyed it. The Maldives is a group of small islands with the largest proportion of the population living in the capital of Male. Our island Velavaru was beautiful with snowy white beaches and clear blue waters. The rooms were spacious and the beds HUGE. Outdoor and indoor shower which were charming as well as ‘rest spaces’ that include a little nook of beachfront, and a comfy outdoor area next to the outdoor shower all of which were appropriately private.
If you want to be around people, there is a comfy bar area where you can enjoy brilliant cocktails and shisha.
The negatives for us: the mosquitoes are brutal so be prepared for that. It also rained for a number of days of our stay which was unanticipated. We blame climate change :-(
The food was not quite what we had hoped in terms of diversity and flavor. We were lucky enough to sample local fare by personal arrangement and I would encourage the resort to include it in their daily fare. It is rather disappointing to travel to the other side of the world and eat the same food that you would have at home. I understand the need to accommodate more conservative palates but spare a thought for us food tourists :-).
The spa is a MUST. Mew & Ruby, you have magic hands!
The highlight for us though was the staff. Warm, friendly and consistently helpful. Special thanks to Hathim, Siby, Ishmael & Yazid.
Be aware that you will be on the island for the entirety of your stay as the sea plane is approximately 350 USD one way (2 pax). There are activities on offer but we elected to veg out. There is no pool but you won’t need it. The ocean and it’s mild temperature water is your pool. Alcohol is only available at the resorts as the Maldives is a strictly orthodox Islamic country. As everything is imported the prices will bring a tear to your eye so prepare for that.
All in all, we are well rested and well pleased if a little lighter in the wallet. I recommend it.
Stayed at the beach villa, which is nicely designed with outside showers in the back and nice deck in the front, then a nice stretch of beach. The service is very attentive and personalized. We felt that all staff, from the general manager to room service were motivated to care for their guests. It would be hard to improve much on service. We had the full board package, which was plenty in terms of variety and quality. Some recommended upgrades are to (1) improve the quality of the coffee (black and espresso) (2) expand the wine selection (perhaps tough being in the Maldives) (3) a little more dairy in the breakfast (cheeses and yogurt, which were limited). The diving operation is first rate. The Divemaster and staff were wonderful and catered to experienced divers like us, and novices equally well. We are lucky to have had the dive package, which made it affordable, otherwise it is pricey if purchased per tank! All in all we can't wait to be back.
Room must be renewed and breakfast must add more options .. i loved tge island but my only thing was if the rooms were more laxure it will be more beautiful everything was great but room must be changed
My husband and I had visited this resort back in 2009 and remembered it fondly. We wanted to go on a diving trip in November, so when I saw they were offering a dive package, we quickly booked it.
The diving was great as fortunately for us, the dive center was not very busy and we were only 4 people on the boat the six days we were diving. The diving was great, and the staff excellent. The Dive master, Ahmed, was very safety conscious, and always made sure we had enjoyable dives. The boat crew was always ready to help. The dive center offers complimentary use of equipment and Nitrox. We had our own equipment, but took advantage of the Nitrox offer.
They also have a marine research center which offers weekly lectures and overviews they are doing with Coral restoration.
We stayed in a beachfront villa on the island (they have over water villas which we had stayed in last time, but like being on a sandy beach). The villa is very nicely designed and had everything we needed from toiletries to bathrobes and slippers. One of our favorite things is the outdoor shower in the private courtyard.
The staff was the best part of the resort. The service is excellent and by the end we felt part of the family. Part of the personalized service at dinner is to make sure guests have the same waiter every day and their preferences are noted; our waiter Waleed always check to make sure we wanted our usual drinks in case we changed our mind. However, the rest of the wait staff knew us and our preferences by the end as well. Food is served buffet style and was quite good. The selection was varied without being overwhelming.
We loved everything and everyone during our honeymoon. Angsana serviced us above and beyond when we first arrived to our departure. We felt so comfortable like we were at home. The food were also great considering it is on the pricy side but the portions were big enough to share between your partner.
