Intimate, 18-villa Balinese lair with private pools a short walk from the beach

The Lowdown

Designed as a collection of modern Balinese homes with stark white walls and mod dark wood furniture, the Kunja Hotel’s 18 one- and three-bedroom villas allow for minimal fuss and maximum privacy. Although there’s no restaurant on the grounds, every villa is equipped with a full kitchen (and you can also order room service from nearby eateries), as well as a private swimming pool. Bedrooms are air-conditioned with king-size beds draped in gauzy curtains, and expansive bathrooms have pebble floors, a separate shower and tub, washbasin sinks and kimono bathrobes. Open-air rotunda lounges have high ceilings and double as dining areas that are full of indoor/outdoor charm. And if you’re here to tie the knot, the hotel’s glass Santi Chapel with Balinese water terraces might just fit the bill.

In the Area

Party central for Bali’s bikini-clad jetset, “The Yak” is the island’s stylish center of luxury spas, sophisticated nightlife, foodie restaurants, and unique shopping — and, of course, high prices and traffic snarls, so rent a bike or moto to get around. Jalan Laksmana’s legion of indie boutiques is a good place to kit up for nights out at Ku de Ta and the W Retreat’s WOOBAR. If you need a little culture, TAKSU curates killer contemporary art and pretty Petitenget Temple is right off the beach, or just browse antiques on Jalan Kerobokan (near Seminyak Road).

Cannot wait to return

My husband and I stayed in a 1 bed villa for 9 nights in June and really could not fault the property nor the staff. The villa (#4) itself was very private, quiet, spacious and clean, with comfortable king size bed and mosquito net (not that we encountered many mosquitos at all) which was put down during service every evening. The pool was a good size and we were even provided with lilos. Breakfast was made in our villa every morning at our chosen time and was delicious and plentiful. Afternoon tea was also served in the villa at our chosen time and consisted of tea/coffee and a different dessert/sweet each day such as macarons or mini chocolate layered mousse. The villa was walking distance from restaurants, coffee shops, and retail stores but the transfer service was very handy for places a little bit further, and we were often dropped off and picked up after dinner. The staff was always friendly and smiling and no request seemed too difficult. We also had a lovely massage at the spa. We cannot wait to return. Just a side note, there are no footpaths for a section near the villas, which might prove difficult for those with prams.

When we arrived and were taken to our 1 bedroom villa my husband walked in and asked me why we hadn't booked it for the whole 2 weeks! It was lovely that due to the time of day all the admin was done at the table in our villa.

The room was totally gorgeous - the pool beautiful. The breakfasts served by their staff every morning was a bit weird to start with but we quickly got used to it. There are no catering facilities but they have a list of places and menus where they will go and get you room service and deliver it to your villa - not only that but they made the table up whilst they were doing it.

Staff were excellent and we loved that the security guards knew us from the first time we walked through the gates throughout out stay. We didn't use their cars to take us to town - it was a 15 minute walk one way and a 10 minute walk the other to the centres with plenty of shopping, restaurants and scooters!

I would defiantly recommend this place to everyone and anyone - it was magic and so relaxing after a busy 10 days working in Singapore. It proved to be the best place we stayed in our 2 weeks in Bali - spend as long as you can there!

Wonderful with lovely staff

The villa was absolutely faultless, we stayed in a one bed villa and it was spacious, private and done to a very high standard. The staff were lovely and couldn’t do enough for us, we never had to wait Long for a lift around Seminyak.

Seminyak has great shopping and eating / drinking options.

We would definitely love to return.

Absolutely fabulous!!!

This is hands down the best villa type resort we have ever stayed at.

The villa itself was perfect, beautifully designed, exceptionally clean, and really well managed.

The staff are also so attentive, and nothing is too much trouble.

Breakfast being cooked in the villa each morning was a nice touch, as well as the free driver to take you around Seminyak.

If we ever return we will absolutely stay here.

To start, we missed the first night due to passport issue at our local airport. Such a disaster and we thought our trip is over. However the villa was so cooperative that they did not cancelled our booking and well-noted that we will be a day late. On the arrival day, we were welcomed by Pak Ketut; and thats when we knew... even we lost one night, its gonna be a great stay. And indeed, we enjoyed every second staying in that lovely villa! The staff were so welcoming and always made us feel at home. We had our private cook for breakfast DAILY. Even if we ordered room service (takeaways from restaurant nearby), the staff prepared it well up to the plate at our villa! Ah... I dont have words for the pool. My 20mths son loved it and yes the pool is well-fenced since day 1. Safety first! Extra floaties or slides can be requested from the staff, and its free! We even had a complimentary gift from the staff (which idk for what occassion but we definitely appreciate it); two sets of Kunja Polo shirts and a plush toy for my son! On our last night we were surprised with a barbecue dinner, as an exchange of missing our first night. We were in awe-d! 3 staffs entertained us and another 2 musicians playing their traditional instruments while we enjoyed the seafood barbecue with a wonderful decoration at our own villa! Now tell me, how do you not love to stay here?! Beyond amazing and it makes me wanting to go there all the time. Thank you, especially to PAK BIMA for your hospitality from our pre-departure to our last night of stay; and every staff that has made our stay a memorable one. Much Love!
