Shanghai is turning into something of a hotel lover’s dream, with new properties popping up at an astounding rate, from chic design hotels to Art Deco grande dames. The Ritz-Carlton Shanghai Pudong falls between the two, balancing the allure of Old Shanghai with stylish Chinese swagger. Art Deco devotees will be utterly charmed by the 1930s feel of the Aura Lobby Lounge — all shimmering pearl walls, luminous jade pillars and beautifully lit Lalique glass. Design fans will love the chrome accents and cube-like sofas at Flair Bar, put together by the top Tokyo creatives at Super Potato Design.
Bed & Bath
The 285 seductive guestrooms come with all you’d expect from a luxury hotel brand. Muted tones mix with geometric bronze patterns on the walls, Deco-inspired furniture and swathes of damask silk on the large windows. The marble bathrooms, which have smoked glass panels, rain showers and copper clawfoot tubs, are a real highlight — especially in the suites that boast tubs by the window. But stealing the show are the stupendous Bund and river views: sweeping and panoramic but not so far away that you can’t see the detail.
Listen to some live saxophone and lounge on a red silk sofa while taking afternoon tea in the Aura Lobby Lounge. A great wall of windows provides breathtaking panoramas of the Bund and bustling Huangpu River. This view can also be enjoyed from the hotel’s two flagship restaurants: Scena, which serves high-end Italian comfort food, and Cantonese eatery Jin Xuan. After dinner take the elevator to the 58th-floor rooftop bar, where local scenesters sip delicious cocktails while soaking up the panoramic city views from the split-level terrace (book a table in advance to ensure upfront seating). Take it back down a notch at the light-flooded indoor infinity pool, or slow to a snail’s pace with a 90-minute Jade Qui Yun massage and facial at the ESPA spa.
In the Area
Perfectly situated in the middle of the Lujiazui business district, the hotel is orbited by some of Shanghai’s newest and most impressive buildings. Stroll along Century Boulevard and snap a few shots of the ray gun–shaped Oriental Pearl Tower (don’t bother paying to ascend; you’ve got the same view from the hotel). Luxury shopping can be found at the Shanghai IFC, while a slew of retail opportunities await at the Super Brand Mall. Apart from hotel bars and restaurants, there’s not a lot in the way of drinking and dining in the area, but the trendy terrace at Matto makes a smart stopping-off point.
How to Get There
The Ritz-Carlton Shanghai, Pudong has become a home-like place for me in Shanghai. From the moment I checked in, I felt the warm familiarity.
I would like to extend my most sincere thanks to Ms. Winga Jin for arranging a wonderful Pearl Tower suite for me--being able to see the spectacular day view and magnificent nice view of Pearl Tower right through the room windows was a total blessing! Besides, Ms. Jin along with her co-worker Miss Mia put endeavour to give me heart-melting "Welcome back" decorations and prepared all the snacks, fruit platter and my beloved sparkling water, which were very much appreciated!! (For some unknown reason, I can't upload those pretty decorations onto here; sorry about that.)
The Ritz-Carlton Club Lounge was an excellent place to have a paranormal view of the Bund, but it was a pity that the food quality was not as high as it should be. Food in the Club Lounges in The Ritz-Carlton Hong Kong and in The Ritz-Carlton Macau was much better.
There was another hiccup during this stay: the "At your service" phone was not answered after 10 rings and it happened more than once, which was much to my surprise because that was something not supposed to happen in a Ritz-Carlton.
Other than that, everything from doorman to concierge team was just wonderfully terrific! I'll definitely come back "home" next time I am in Shanghai!
this hotel has always been one that i patronise whenever I'm in town, not only for the view but also because it is located above a booming mall so whenever i feel hungry, i can always pop down for a bit of food. moreover, the customer service in this hotel is also amazing. they talk to you politely and if necessary can converse with you in english (although it may not be the best).
Thank you for the exceptional service from the concierge and guest relationship team, especially Mr. Blanco Shen.
We have nice conversation via phone and email before my arrival date on 2th Nov. As per my request, Mr. Shen and his team gave great support to the birthday decoration in my room and it is really impressive and surprise.
We enjoyed an excellent birthday night during my stay. Everything is perfect and the breakfast which prepared from IRD is also excellent.
The service is really touching! High recommended!
