Historic Tucson resort with a spa, celebrated restaurant, Santa Catalina mountain views and miles of desert trails

The Lowdown

In the foothills of Tucson’s Santa Catalina Mountains, the Hacienda Del Sol Guest Ranch has been a distinctive Tucson landmark since the late 1920s. From the Moorish-inspired architecture to the traditional Southwestern interiors decked out with local artwork, custom-made wood furniture and hand-painted trim, the resort feels like an authentic escape to the desert Southwest. Historic guestrooms start at 300 square feet, and all have flat-screen TVs, coffeemakers and mini-fridges, plus free WiFi; most overlook the inner courtyard. Larger Catalina Rooms are a good choice for families or groups of friends, with 500 square feet of space, the option of one King bed or two Queen beds, and desert, garden or city views. The spacious bathrooms have custom amenities and split vanities. On the dining front, the Grill restaurant is a Tucson favorite for its regional dishes, which are made with local meat and vegetables, as well as herbs grown in the resort’s own organic garden. Ask for a table at the casual Terraza restaurant for alfresco dining with gorgeous Santa Catalina mountain views. For active types, the resort can arrange hiking or horseback riding adventures through the foothills, as well as trips to Tucson’s shopping districts and galleries.

In the Area

Soak in the area’s rich history with a visit to the 18th-century San Xavier Mission, one of the country’s finest examples of Spanish Mission architecture, recently restored and featuring a museum. Check out an impressive natural wonder at Saguaro National Park; the Sonoran Desert is the only place in the world where the giant saguaro cactus grows, and it’s just a half-hour drive from the inn. Just minutes away is Reid Park Zoo, where you can get to know over 500 species of exotic animal, many endangered; there are even adorable newborn lion cubs.

Enjoyable Stay in Tucson
Ed M

Celebrating our 33rd wedding anniversary with 5 nights here, and we enjoyed it very much. Not quite 5 stars which I will explain briefly later.
This is a meticulously landscaped property, which is well cared for. Some of the cacti and succulents throughout the property are just stunning. Staff was overall polite and there when you needed them. We were in one of the older rooms on the pathway down to the riding stables, and it was rustic and functional, but a bit cramped for a 5 night stay. Can't say enough good things about outdoor dining at the patio grill, the less formal of the 2 dining options. Excellent service and food, in a lovely setting with live music on most nights. And the choice of 2 pools was a nice bonus, both relatively uncrowded and perfect for an after dinner evening swim.
What prevents me from giving that 5th star? We did find the housekeeping service a bit uneven, as on some days they did not replenish our bottled water, or leave us clean wine glasses. And as we were celebrating an anniversary on this trip, after reading some previous reviews when couples on their anniversaries received room upgrades to the newer suites, we unfortunately did not. I understand that could have been a function of how crowded they were, but to my eye they were not fully booked any night during our stay. And we would have appreciated just a little something extra upon check in, be it a box of chocolates or bottle of wine, in recognition of our special anniversary trip. But alas we did not.

Fantastic Time at their Restaurant

We had very recently a superb evening meal, service, and sunset view at the Hacienda del Sol. One also has the option of spending the night at their resort which we also strongly endorse. Meals there can be pricey but I opine well worth it. Special unique meals are readily available plus many special items on their varied menu to choose easily. The staff is extremely supportive and informative without being overbearing or intrusive. A visitor can get great useful information from the staff in a noncondesending manner. The drink and dessert options are simply wonderful and marvelous. We had an excellent time and celebrated well a special occasion for us.

It was great . Very clean ,nice staff very private romantic place.

I must stay place with a lot of history. Very clean friendly romantic secluded place to stay. I would recommend this place to anyone . Location is very central to everything you want to do. Bike riding area is great.. the gardens are amazing .
