Overview

The Review

The Relais Royal stays true to its name. After undergoing extensive renovations, this 18th-century manor house continues to feel regal. With great attention to detail, the terra-cotta tile floors and marble fireplaces have been preserved within the confines of the ivy-dripped stone walls.

The Relais Royal lies between the Hers River and the Tabe mountain range, near the Pyrenees and the Spanish border, and is a little over an hour by car from Toulouse.

Views across this quintessential French town is one highlight of staying at Relais Royal. Another is a meal at the hotel’s Ciel d’Or restaurant, which serves traditional French fare and five-course meals made using the freshest regional products. The vaulted wine cellar has a vast selection to choose from, and a tour can be arranged at any time of day.

For daytrips to a more traditional side of France, visit the famous medieval castle town of Carcassonne, the vineyards of Limoux or the 14th-century galleries at the St. Maurice Cathedral in Toulouse. Blending the cultures of France and Spain, the Relais Royal is a charming detour off the usual traveler’s path, one that includes bullfighting, robust red wines and colorful markets bathed in Mirepoix’s famous colorful buildings.
