Low-key hillside condo complex with three pools, an award-winning chef and a private beach
On the relatively undeveloped southeast corner of Antigua in a private bay surrounded by rolling green hills, Nonsuch Bay Resort is a retreat for travelers seeking beach time and watersports. A favorite with families, passing yachties and loved-up couples, the resort offers the low-key environment of a private condo complex combined with the full-service extras of a luxe resort in a stunning hillside location.
Bed & Bath
The resort’s one- and two-bedroom apartments are housed in whitewashed buildings along the hillside — all positioned to take in the stunning bay views. Pitched ceilings, enormous French windows and wraparound verandas encourage indoor-outdoor living and make the most of the island’s cooling trade winds, while the modern all-white palette is offset by the Caribbean blues and greens just outside. Modern comforts include free WiFi, flat-screen televisions, in-room coffee and tea makers, and iPod docking stations, but guests at Nonsuch Bay tend to focus their attention on the resort’s natural bounty: beach, bay and clear blue seas.
The activities cover the beach-vacation spectrum, from a dip in one of the resort’s three infinity pools to sunbathing on the private beach to an in-room spa treatment, but Nonsuch Bay’s trump card is its position on a protected bay — ideal for sailing and windsurfing. A highlight of any stay is a meal at the Bay, the resort’s hillside restaurant. In an open-air setting, chef Mitchell Husbands (voted Caribbean Chef of the Year in 2011) serves a refined menu of classic Carribean and international fare.
In the Area
Nonsuch Bay has one of Antigua’s best sailing schools, and routine races offer a chance for guests to get competitive. Or, opt for a day excursion (complete with picnic) to nearby Green Island. Rather leave the ship’s wheel to the captain? Take an all-day eco-excursion aboard Adventure Antigua; you’ll snorkel off Hell’s Gate and learn where celebs like Giorgio Armani and Eric Clapton reside while on the island. When hunger strikes, make a beeline to Carmichael’s, one of the area’s best restaurants, complete with spectacular island views. Enjoy fresh seafood and meat as the sun sets. And for some indulgence, make a reservation for an in-room spa treatment. Therapists will even draw you a bath afterward in your apartment’s oversize soaking tub.
