A dashing, nautically-inspired hotel in one of America’s best-preserved colonial seaports
Although built in 1985, the six-story Loews—with its upper tier of arched windows and a classic redbrick façade—resembles a colonial warehouse that might have lined the wharves of Annapolis two centuries ago. The hotel is fronted by the acclaimed WEST Kitchen & Tavern, which opened in 2012 as part of an ambitious renovation that also included a sleek overhaul of the lobby. Now with striking black-and-white-tile floors, soaring black columns and white-marble reception desks backed by a dramatic contemporary mural, Loews’ maritime-inspired décor is a mix of ubermodern and historical.
Bed and Bath
The bold royal-blue and cardinal-red colors that appear in everything from bedskirts to armchairs touch on the nautical spirit of this city famed for sailing regattas and a clubby yachting scene. The preppy maritime theme is bright and cheerful, although some may find the pervasive blue hues a little excessive. Tall windows let in plenty of sunlight, and ergonomically designed desks and chairs create comfy, productive work environments. Bathrooms, with striped pale-blue wallpaper and white-tile shower-tub combinations, are merely perfunctory, although Lather bath products are a nice touch and the towels are soft and plush.
The hotel’s best attribute may very well be dapper WEST Kitchen & Tavern, with its high ceilings, tall windows, open kitchen, lively bar and extensive outdoor seating on a charming patio. Serving well-crafted modern American fare with an emphasis on regional seafood and produce, the restaurant serves three meals daily (and a downright scene-y weekend brunch, during which guests might try the delectable West Street Benedict, with bacon-poached eggs, a lump crab cake, and mint-grapefruit aioli). There’s an impressive craft cocktail list, too. A good-size gym and a business center round out the public amenities.
In the Area
Be sure to set aside time to tour the imposing grounds and first-rate naval history museum at the U.S. Naval Academy; also worth a look is the nearby Maryland State House, the oldest such facility still in continued use. Annapolis’s historic waterfront abounds with venerable dark-wood pubs and seafood restaurants—the neighborhood also has one of the nation’s highest concentrations of 18th-century homes. Head across Spa Creek to explore the inviting neighborhood of Eastport, or the “Maritime Republic of Easport,” as its independent-minded residents like to call it. It’s a hub of terrific restaurants, including Vin 909, a hip farm-to-table bistro and wine bar set inside a quaint bungalow.
