A relaxing adults-only Thalasso spa on the sparkling Costa del Sol, with optional half board

The Lowdown

Occupying a prime position on the Costa del Sol, between Puerto Banus and Estepona, Barcelo Estepona Thalasso Spa is a haven from the stresses and strains of the humdrum. Situated just 600 metres from the beach, with a shuttle to ferry you to some of the area’s most sought-after beach clubs, this luxurious retreat houses a beautiful outdoor pool offering ideal cocktail drinking and lounger loafing territory. It’s also within a putter’s swing of several excellent golf courses, including Guadalmina and Atalaya.
The main event here, however, is the hotel’s 2000 square metres worth of mesmerising, blissful spa facilities. This is one Mediterranean escape that’s bound to leave you feeling as shiny as a new cent by the time you leave. Not only does Thalasso U-spa offer its visitors a marine therapeutic circuit with clean water piped direct from the Mediterranean, it also provides 11 marine hydrotherapy rooms, 19 sumptuous Thalasso suites, a range of soothing massages, and beauty treatments give your body an outward healthy glow. From Niagara to Jamaica, the spa’s hydromassage baths have got the world map covered. The therapists here don’t go for a one-treatment-fits-all approach, they tailor their professional handiwork to your body’s individual needs and skin type.

Rooms

Superior double rooms come decked in neutral fabrics with modern furnishings. The serene and relaxing ambience perfectly complements the main pampering purpose of this luxurious retreat.

Spa

When you’ve finished with the dynamic pool with counter-current system, active pool with more than 20 stations, air-water beds, swan neck jets, cascades, hydromassage jets, Finnish sauna, hammam and aroma bath, try a treatment or two. Packages include the Integral Care and the Marine Encounter programmes.

Dining

Dr Antonio Escribano, specialist in endocrinology and nutrition, has had a say in the mouth-watering menus available at Aguamar Restaurant. You’ll find nutritionally balanced meals offering up sophisticated gastronomy and wonderful flavours. À la carte options are available, alongside a buffet spread. Daytime snacks are available at both the lobby bar and the pool bar.

Location

The hotel is located 600 metres from the beach on the sparkling Costa del Sol, an area that offers some of Europe’s finest stretches of sand and sunshine. Watersports are available by the boat-load and keen golfers will appreciate the range of top notch courses found within a short put of the hotel.

Misses the mark by a long way

I am now into my 4th day of a 7 night stay based on room and breakfast. The allocated room is spacious with a super king bed and a pleasing view over the pool area. The hotel is located very close to a dual carriageway road and next to a roundabout / slipway access to the local village. Double glazed Windows on the room balcony eliminate all traffic noise so sleep is very peaceful and comfortable. On arrival we found a couple of minor shortcomings in our bathroom. These were reported to reception and were fixed within an hour. Good service but why were these issues not picked up by the housekeepers and room cleaning staff? Breakfasts are at best adequate! The young lady cooking fresh eggs etc is frequently not there. Your choice - either a long wait or take a cold egg!
The pool area is very nice but we are plagued by constant music, often too loud, that is ruining our whole holiday.
We chose this hotel because it is away from local resort centres and caters for adults only. I complained to reception about this but was told many people like music. End of story! They simply do not get it that many people do not want music all day long. You need a car if you want to get about from this location, but be warned the hotel charges €15 per night for the privilge of parking in their underground car park. Total Rip Off! The local beach is just a little over 10 minutes walk from the hotel. To walk there you have to cross (and I mean leg over) half a dozen Armco Barriers as well as avoid local high volume traffic.
For a short break this hotel has Thalasso and Spa facilities, but has little else to offer. We came hear for a peaceful holiday but would have been no worse in a family based hotel. I therefore cannot recommend it and will certainly not return.

A nice comfortable hotel, but no-one told us it isn't in Estepona!

The room was fine, huge comfortable bed, staff pleasant and helpful. Like other reviewers, we were taken aback to find it's at a motorway junction about halfway between Estepona and San Pedro de Alcantara and not having our own transport we spent a lot of Euros on taxis. But it's worth walking into the village of Cancelada which is well kept and pretty. As well as El Carnicero restaurant there is a row of shops and bars (turn right opposite El Carnicero) and a pretty little square. turn right after the shops into the covered mall for the post office and the A.A.V.V. bar which has a nice terrace with good views, good basic food and is popular with the locals (good sign!)

Relaxing

Booked the Junior Suite with balcony room (the one with bath tub). The room was very generous in size with comfortable sofas & TV with a fair selection of channels. It had an enormous bed which was very comfortable (I'd even say new mattress) & overall it was very clean.
This room has a balcony the width of the room overlooking the pool area with table & chairs PLUS a large terrace on the side with sunbeds, a dining table and the bath tub. Disappointed that the bath tub was just that-a bath tub-which has been installed in a terrace & is covered by a wooden box. It is narrow and although it had two head cushions the water jets are only on one side of the bath. This was disappointing as we expected a more appropriate version for exteriors.
Breakfast buffet had a good selection of cereals, fresh fruits, pastries, breads, omelettes etc, etc.
Pool area was relaxing, nice size pool which was not busy and a pool bar playing music at a reasonable volume.
I must add that the hotel was difficult to find as it has no name on the facade and the GPS finder gave me two addresses. It is isolated with nothing but private houses, a Burger King and a Lidl supermarket next to it. It is a 15 minute drive to Estepona where there are plenty of restaurants etc.
As I said in my title, perfect for relaxing.

Good Hotel

Stayed here for 6 days in May.After reading the bad reviews I do agree with what some of them say but we had room 405 overlooking the road and once the patio doors were shut and the air con was on we couldn't really hear it.Also the rooms have an inner door from the bathroom leading to the bedroom which stops any noise from the communal hallway. We had the bed and breakfast option and the choices we o.k but didn't offer boiled eggs or pancakes which most other hotels do.Tried the buffet dinner option once but then discovered El Carnicero which is a ten minute walk up the road and has fantastic steaks and is a lovely restaurant. The pool is huge and rather cold but it was only May and hasn't had a chance to warm up yet.The walk to the beach is about ten minutes and you have to cross the busy roundabouts. The best part about this hotel is the no children policy so the pool area is nice and chilled. We had a car as well because on the cloudy days we drove into Puerto Banus which is about a 15 min drive. The hotel has a secure underground car park which we paid 8 euros a day.The spa has a nice sea water hot pool with various jet treatments.Staff were helpful and friendly. All in all a nice relaxing break but be aware it is on a busy road and a ten minute walk anywhere.

Do not be fooled by the description and photos!

Barcelo did not let us know that this hotel had been taken over by Exe, we booked last February Stayed here may 8th for 7 days, location awful, busy motorwayA7 practically on the doorstep, scruffy, rubbish strewn area surrounding hotel, noisy traffic and not pleasant to walk, even to bus stop. Beach at least a 20 minute walk across motorway via bridge. Taxi fair to/from estapona 15to17 euros so unless you have plenty of money to spare, forget it!! Hotel was advertising 10 minute walk to Estapona but now revised to 10 minute drive, it is 10 kms to Estapona town. We were half board, the dinner food was dire, most of the food cold, I complained once and was told there was a microwave!!! It did not change, food that should be hot was cold or lukewarm all week. Don't be fooled by description of a peaceful stroll around the gardens, only garden is around the pool and this might take you a minute to walk around. My elderly parents were with us and there was nothing to easily walk to, do not bring anyone with poor mobility here, the shower over bath is difficult and slippery for them to use. There was no entertainment except showing the football and the motor racing. Not enough staff, waiting at bar for someone to serve was commonplace. Room was passable, clean, nothing special.very disappointing and will not return.
