Holy trinity of hotel, restaurant and club in a former Catholic orphanage near Amsterdam's Oosterpark
Formerly an orphanage with its own chapel (now a nightclub), this impressive building in the hip and increasingly gastro-minded Oost district has been boldly remodeled for party purposes. The mammoth Victorian-era interiors have been put through the funky cycle, with eye-popping colorblock canvases and atmospheric lighting effects that take full advantage of the scale of the place. The industrial-chic canteen looks out onto a huge terrace and well-tended greenery.
Bed and Bath
Some of the corridors have been painted an atmospheric black, but the guestrooms feature white walls and sofas, plain white bed linens and largely white abstract paintings. A large round lampshade woven from abaca stops the place from resembling the inside of a fridge by throwing textured light around the space. The windows are positioned high above eye level, so imaginative bathers can make full use of the twin showers in the black-tile bathrooms.
Located in the chapel of this former orphanage, the nightclub at Hotel Arena is ecumenical, offering such regular events as Salsa Lounge and the R&B-flavored Swingbeatz. Dutch bikes from the neighboring VanMoof company can be hired on-site, and the neighborhood’s sparse foot traffic means it's a good place to practice before heading into town. You’ll want to power up first, of course, by taking advantage of the generous breakfast buffet. The restaurant serves traditional Dutch dishes for lunch and dinner, or you can opt for the surprise menu if you can't decide what to eat. Take lunch on the alfresco terrace in the summer months.
In the area
Although not as famous as its manicured westerly cousin the Vondelpark, the Oosterpark, which serves as Hotel Arena’s back yard, is not without its charms, including regular open-air music festivals and an array of modern sculptures. Increasingly it’s bordered by a host of buzzy young bars and restaurants; check out the raucous Bar Bukowski and the cozy Pata Negra 2 (an outpost of a city-center tapas favorite). Heavyweight attractions within walking distance include the Tropenmuseum, with its collection of colonial-era treasures, and the Artis Zoo, one of the oldest in Europe.
