Converted 19th-century brick school with boutique charm in the stylish Zuid district
Housed in an atmospheric former 19th century school, this 40-room boutique sleep recently won the Prix Villegiature for the “Best interior design in a hotel in Europe,” thanks to the beautifully pared-down guest rooms decorated simply but opulently in tones of chocolate, burnt orange, and gray. The restaurant–housed in the former gymnasium–has a lovely garden terrace shaded by olive trees, while the lounge sports a fireplace for cozy chats over cocktails.
In the Area
Right on the hotel’s doorstep is one of Amsterdam’s hippest ‘hoods, the Fashion & Museum district, in the city’s Zuid. Head straight to Museum Square, where a handful of legendary museums are located, including Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum and the Stedelijk Museum. Art lust sated, head straight to Rijsel, a Flemish rotisserie-style restaurant across the Amstel that’s a big hit with the city’s creative classes. Try the perfectly roasted chicken or the home-made duck sausage.
