There are few cities that mix their heritage so effortlessly with buzzing modernity, but Amsterdam manages it beautifully. Among its beguiling maze of canals, you’ll find 17th-century houses, hip coffee shops and a plethora of stylish boutiques, as well as antique emporiums, artists’ studios and a host of fascinating museums. This eclectic mix keeps Amsterdam firmly at the top of European-escape wishlists, and with a central stay at Villa Nicola, you’re perfectly placed to find out why.
Set in a historic townhouse that dates back to the 1900s, Villa Nicola is bursting with luxurious style. The old and new seamlessly combine here to create spaces that look lifted from the pages of a sleek design mag. Mid-century furniture and parquet floors create a sleek vibe in your suite, which opens out into a tranquil inner garden or sleek sitting room, while contemporary taxidermy and Designers Guild prints pepper the communal areas. Forget the fridge magnet or postcard; your Amsterdam souvenir will likely come in the form of design inspiration for your own home.
The interior style here looks ripped from the pages of a design magazine, with parquet floors, mid-century furniture and plenty of lush, green plants. The Garden suite is a true oasis, with a conservatory area that leads out into a sheltered, inner garden. Spacious and sleek, the Urban suite has a spacious seating area, a separate bedroom and an airy bathroom.
Breakfast is served daily at Villa Nicola. When it comes to lunch and dinner, you have a plethora of Amsterdam’s offerings right at your fingertips. For something a little different, hop on the tram to Da Kas, which serves Mediterranean dishes using organic ingredients that are grown and served on-site within their impressive glasshouse. For classic Dutch dishes, you’re just a 15-minute walk from Loetje.
Amsterdam has many fascinating museums to visit, and a boat cruise along the canals provides a unique perspective of this charming city. Original paintings by both Van Gogh and Rembrandt can be found within the art galleries here. The Van Gogh Museum is just a 15-minute walk from the hotel, as is Vondelpark and the Stedelijk Museum, a haven for modern art enthusiasts. Rembrandt House Museum can be reached on foot in 20 minutes.
How to Get There
What a find! I have worked in the hospitality industry for many years and have rarely come across anyone like Werner who has such guest focus, an eye for every detail and effortless charm. The whole experience was fantastic from the warmest of welcomes to the brilliant breakfasts and the comfortable and stylish surroundings. Location is great for both the centre and the more interesting outer canals and streets. Who needs bland hotels when options such as Villa Nicola exists? Will definitely be back.
We stayed for seven nights and loved every second in this exquisit B&B. The wonderful host Werner contacted us a few days before our arrival and gave helpful advice how to reach his place and links for some nice restaurants in the environment. We felt welcome even before we were there. The reality topped that feeling... When we actually came to Werner’s Villa we were overwhelmed by his friendliness. We were early so he made us tea and offered little sweets and then explained everything (sight seeing tipps, how to get around...) we wanted to know - and a lot more. We also got to know his lovely dog Kees, a friendly lovable Springer Spaniel. Our room was the garden suite - we fell in love at first sight. Actually it is like a little apartment with a great living room, a bedroom in a niche, a huge bathroom with an enormous bathtub, a separate toilet, a hallway and an extra room for the clothes... In every room were fresh flowers and the rooms are beautifully decorated. We could make tea or coffee in our room and we were provided with sweets and water bottles every day.
This is going to be a long description - because now I will tell you about the breakfast. It is served in a wonderful cosy kitchen by Werner. We never had so many little bowls with all kinds of vegetables, cheeses, meat (if you wish), lachs, jams...muesli, bread, rolls, and, and, and... Of course we could choose eggs in any style we wished. For us best of all was the daily morning chat with this special man. He managed to provide a different muesli bowl for every single day.
We enjoyed our stay thoroughly and hope to get a space in his villa in future. As many people like this place a lot he is booked far ahead - but you can look at his homepage....
Last weekend my husband and I with our friends stayed at villa Nicola. From the moment our host Werner opened the door I knew by the decor and fragrance I was in a very special house, I can’t give the villa Nicola 5 stars because it deserves more, our room was so lovely with lots of lovely touches, like the wonderful flowers, and our special chocolates, and lovely candles burning. We can’t thank Werner enough for all he did to make us feel so very welcome into his stunning home, nothing was two much trouble for him, and of course we mustn’t forget his beloved welsh springer spaniel Kaas, who was just adorable, we stayed for three nights and each morning we would come into a full laid table with lots of delicious food from fresh fruits, different cheeses meats and a great selection of breads and pastries, the villa was right on the canal and in a great location, to all the very good attractions, all I can really say firstly is a great big thank you Werner for being such a lovely host all our interesting conversation, and all your knowledge on where to visit and the top restaurants you recommended , Sally and I can’t wait to come back in the summer, to be thourley spoilt.
Mea culpa. I've been meaning to write this review ever since our 3 night stay at Villa Nicola back in September as it has a permanent spot on my "memorable boutique hotels" list and I've recommended it countless times! The Villa Nicola experience begins when you approach its quiet neighborhood (a short walk to just about everything in Amsterdam) and open the door to this wonderfully restored house on the canal and are greeted by a wave of an enticing scent crafted by Amsterdam-based fragrance maker Marie Stella Maris. The richly, warmly, and creatively decorated house boasts early 20th to mid-century to 21st century details. The rooms are large, comfortable, and beyond inviting...the perfect place to wake up (great beds and linens) or unwind after a day wandering through Amsterdam. Fresh flowers, water, wine, snacks, access to the Villa's kitchen and fridge, a fabulous breakfast customized to your needs/wants, a quick call to a restaurant owner friend to get that dinner reservation where/when you want are among those little things offered by Villa Nicola's charming and accommodating owner that come without asking. Private, quiet, personalized and perfect.
Yes, Villa Nicola, 5 stars across the board. Is a stay here that good? Well the answer is a resounding yes! There are many reasons why a stay here is so beloved and I can give you a pretty good overview. Location, spot on, situated on the eastern canal belt, a stroll from the museums, Van Gogh, Rijksmuseum, Costor Diamonds. A couple of tram stops from the lovely shops, bars resteraunts of Utrechtsestr. Easily reachable from Central station, tram line 4. Villa Nicola is a large town house, bang on the canal, on a quite street, near Stadhouderskade tram stop. It has 2 suites, the Urban Suite and the Garden Suite. We stayed in the Urban Suite for 5 days and it was brilliant. Really cosy and warm, even in the cold weather. Fresh flowers, scented candles, pod coffee maker and bottled water is always available, free, sweets or biscuits also, high end bathroom with state of the art shower cubicle. Check it out on the website for the the photos, it really is a fantastic chilled out space. Nice you may think, but the biggest plus point of staying here is WERNER, the owner and his lovely Welsh Springer Spaniel, Kaas. Werner is fantastic host, who cannot do enough for you and he would advise you on anything you would need to know about the city. The breakfast is always freshly prepared by Werner with a great choice. He will ask you what you would like. The house is unique, furnished with love and housekeeping is to a very high standard. We found it much better than staying in a busy, corporate hotel.
Many thanks Werner, we had a great stay, get the kettle on! Hope it won't be long before we see you and Kaas again! G& Denise.
