How to Get There
Ozo Kandy is an awesome experience. We tried food and drinks at the rooftop bar and the "Eat" Restaurant. Location and the ambiance was really great. The place is welcoming and. I'd like to thank our host at "Eat" restaurant Sanduni for her friendly service.
This hotel is said to be one of Kandy’s best. And on first appearances, the lobby is spacious & elegant. The rooftop pool & bar is stunning.
We were upgraded to a room with mountain views & a balcony. Lovely clean room, although in-room lighting is very, very poor.
There are two computers for use in the lobby which is handy.
Breakfast buffet is good.
But the service component is hugely lacking, even though staff are trying. I suspect there is a severe lack of training & HR education.
The rooftop bar drinks prices are right over the top for this part of the world. A glass of basic red or white wine is twice the price or more of some of Colombo’s best restaurants and bars. Pour sizes are minute. Wine standards are low.
Cocktails not much better. Snacks served with drinks are cheap and nasty.
Food prices in the hotel are high & the rooftop menu is full of carbohydrates and fried food. The room service menu is no better. If you like sandwiches, chips & pizza you’ll be ok.
We arranged food packs for the 7 hour train journey the next day at 7am - reception had no idea what we were talking about. They never came.
We told them we’d been told the breakfast buffet would open at 630am that day - again, they had no idea what we were talking about.
There were 3 of us in the room, one towel. The shampoo and shower gel are very low quality and large bottles.
Three of us, only 2 bottles of water, and so on.
No-one was thinking outside the square or providing real service.
I would not recommend this hotel as every single element was frustrating - and it’s not worth the high price.
This hotel is a lovely hotel, with lovely rooms. Rooms were spotless and always cleaned daily by cleaners. The hotel has a bar and restaurant which is open daily - does not serve food on a Sunday. Breakfast was ok and served a variety of different options. This hotel is about 15 minutes by taxi from the airport and 15-20 minutes by metro to central station. 5 minute walk to metro station. Very easy to get into the centre.
I've been there for 3 nights at the end of November and quite frankly I don't understand some of the reviews. The room was exactly as advertised, big, comfy bed, there were extra pillows in the cupboard/wardrobe. Yes,the bathroom has a glass panel, but it provides the privacy that you need. It is very close to the Biljmer Arena and Ziggo Dome (10-15 mins walking) and 5 mins walk to the train/metro station which will take you to the centre in 15 min tops. The breakfast was really good, plenty of choices, from cheeses of all kinds to fruit and cereal, yoghurt, omellette, boiled eggs, ham, croissants etc. Dinner was also really good, although a bit on the pricey side - but it is a 4 star hotel, so you expect those prices. The only very minor downside that I can think of is that when we requested to have the room cleaned they did not take away the empty bottles that were in the room - but the bed was changed, the towels as well and they replenished the tea/cofee. Staff was great, helpful and very pleasant, especially the bartender. Overall a great hotel.
We stayed here because we got a good deal. We were aware of the distance to city centre, which was not a problem. The local transport networks were superb (once you got a handle on them).
The hotel itself was very simple. The positives are the staff are very cheerful. The building was modern. But the not so positives; the rooms could do with a bit more thought. For example.
1) The bathrooms had glass walls to two sides which meant when you laid in bed your partner could be sitting on the toilet just a few feet away, not romantic in any way.
2) Because of the glass walls it meant there were no hooks to hang your towels or clothes on. Because of this we had to put our used towels on the floor to be replaced daily, as there was nowhere for them to hang and dry.
3) The extras were very basic. Ladies if you are travelling here, please bring your own toiletries as the ones they supply are in a similar dispenser as you get in public toilets and you have no idea what make they are.
4) No tissues in the room.
5) Very limited tea/coffee facilities - 4 tea English breakfast t-bags, 4 instant coffee with same of sugar and powdered milks.
6) No bottled water
7) Towels are very thin and quite small. 'Postage stamps'!
There were a couple of issues with the room. The showerhead badly needed fixing as the water was going everywhere, including outside the shower cubicle.
There was only one mug in the room.
The glass shelves where the glasses were, were never cleaned and you could write your name on it on all 4 mornings of our stay.
Underneath the bed looked like it had not been cleaned for some while, as there were balls of fluff and dust. The floors were made of melamine so to run a damp mop underneath the bed would not have been a problem. The flooring was quite cold, however, and a relatively inexpensive pair of complimentary slippers would have been appreciated.
I would say overall, if you stay here, make sure you do it for no more than £70 per night, it certainly was not luxurious, but a generally clean, basic hotel.
Any more would not be worth it, unless they do improve their hotel (and it would not take much...)
Would I stay here again? Probably not. I would look at somewhere nearer the city centre but for a functional and basic stay this was fine.
