How to Get There
I could go into full detail however, life is far too short to write bad reviews. In short, if you have booked this hotel for a summer stay, please note that you will feel like you have a arrived at the core, molten centre of the earth.
The hotel bedrooms, due to a “breakage”, have no air conditioning. We advised staff at checkin, who ensured us the nighttime temp would be a lot cooler. Au contraire my friends... a sleepless, baking night ensued and following a lengthy debated, frustrated conversation with senior management the following morning, we received a paltry 50 Euro off our 410 Euro nights stay, plus the bonus of walking around like zombies until our flight later that day.
Amsterdam is beautiful as is the hotels location, but note the a/c issue and that it will not be fixed anytime soon (listed building). Ps. It was a surprise for my 40th birthday from my wife. When I heard the price she paid for the room, I nearly had a coronary. Enjoy Amsterdam and stay cool somewhere else.
I stayed three days in the old Canal House and didn’t want to leave..my room with the most comfortable bed I have ever slept in overlooked the courtyard and I heard the peal of church bells every half hour.. this 1600s house was in the style of girl with a pearl earring or the miniaturist with artwork covering every wall. The breakfast was luxury continental but you could add to it ..so a full English breakfast will be cooked if you request it. .it is a street away from the Anne Frank house ( which you have to book on line months in advance)..and the westerkerker where Rembrandt is buried. The hotel even supplies umbrellas for the wet March days. also room service doesn’t incur an extra charge.. I did the red light tour ..a canal cruise and visited the Van Gogh museum..beware of bikes and trams..but that is all part of the adventure
The Canal House is a small boutique set in the heat of the Jordan district and pretty near most everything in central Amsterdam. From the moment we walked in until the time we left each member of the staff did what they could to make our stay very enjoyable. The garden out back is a great place to relax, have a drink and/or snack (the Dutch have made snacks an art firm...try the bitterballens) after a full day.
There is a nice morning continental breakfast served each morning as well.
My only issue was the lack of air conditioning. We arrived during a quite warm May week, and the location of our room (#16) was such that it stayed too warm for us all the time...even with the aid of a fan. The lower floors seemd to be much cooler for some reason than ours. Our hallway seemed excessively warm all the time. However, the location, the service and the great garden made up for the lack of air conditioning. I am sure on a cooler day, it would have been more than fine. If again in Amsterdam...we would definitely return to the Canal House.
Living in Amsterdam often means cold and grey. However, on a sunny day everyone wants to sit outside. After walking around town and not finding a single spot I remembered the beautiful i side garden of the hotel. We came (6 of us) sat down and were directly served by a really sweet lady. She was spot on perfect and polite.
Wonderful place with fantastic staff! Big thumbs up :)
This place is amazing. Old canal house from 1600's that has been redesigned to be a high-end boutique hotel. Staff is now family after three stays there in one year. Rooms are so unique, each room has a different interpretation of the hotel design, very comfortable beds, nice artwork. Views from almost every single room, either the canal or the courtyard in the back. Breakfast in hotel is so tasty that you can't miss it. Flexible, friendly, accommodating, designed, well location. Best find in Amsterdam.
