How to Get There
We stayed over the latter part of the week before Easter as a mini spring break vacation. It was our first time to Amelia Island and Hoyt House was recommended by a neighbor. It didn't disappoint! Charming old mansion that's been converted to a B&B. We were greeted by the owners who are super nice people and made us feel right at home. Very nice room, and quiet considering this is an old home. The best part was the wonderful breakfast: bananas foster pancakes pretty much says it all! Highly recommend this gem.
We were looking forward to a stay at the Hoyt House, but did not get the opportunity. A relative of ours sent us a gift certificate to stay at the Hoyt House for a Christmas present. ($300). By the time we were able to schedule a stay at this B&B we were surprised to notice that the gift certificate had expired. I never thought to check for an expiration date on a gift certificate for a Bed & Breakfast,... assuming a greater sense of hospitality was generally the rule for B&B's. (Free coupons, food products, etc, but not B&B's).
I called to find if this expiration date could be waved. The answer was no. "It was written out of the system". "A lot of accounting goes into this"... Huh?
Well, I guess too bad for us.
Our 6-night stay at this charming property met or exceeded every expectation. Furnishings, amenities, and service were all first-rate. Our room was spacious, quiet, and comfortable with a mix of antique furnishings, luxury bedding, and modern conveniences. The bathroom was also spacious with modern fixtures and great amenities. The included breakfast was a delicious way to start each day, and we sorely miss the homemade scones. Happy Hour each afternoon was a great way to meet our fellow guests before walking to dinner at one of the many nearby restaurants. Location is perfect. Five minute drive to the beach and five minute walk to town center shopping and dining. The pool was an oasis when the beach was overly breezy. The owners are friendly, welcoming, anxious to help, and they work hard to provide a great property and experience for their guests. If we had been more relaxed, we would have needed resuscitation, and we are looking forward to our next visit.

I wanted potential guests to know about my experience. I booked 2 rooms for a visit with my husband and myself, and my mother-in-law and cousin over Thanksgiving. I called the B&B directly so I could make sure the room for my mother-in-law was easily accessible and that they could accommodate my gluten-free diet. All was well, so I put down $900 deposit as requested. We were all looking forward to this trip but during the last week of October I was contacted by the Mayo Clinic informing me of an opening to see some doctors I had been waiting to see. I jumped at the chance and went there the beginning of November. Unfortunately these doctor visits included a lot of testing and I ended up staying in Rochester, MN for over 2 weeks. This timeframe would not let us visit Florida as planned. As soon as I knew the situation I called and emailed the B&B giving them 10 days' notice to fill the rooms. They emailed me back saying if they filled the rooms, they would reimburse me or let me rebook at another time. I checked frequently during my stay in MN and each time I checked their website was informed they had no vacancies for the timeframe. I also had my sister-in-law call to ask for a reservation during the timeframe and she was told there were no vacancies. When I returned I asked for the reimbursement (our trip to the Mayo Clinic included a lot of unexpected out-of-pocket expenses). I was told they didn't rebook the rooms and so there would be no refund. I asked if I could rebook the dates using the $900 deposit and was told this wasn't possible. I know this is a small business, but I did give them 10 days' notice during a busy holiday period. They told me I should have bought travel insurance. I told them I had no idea these doctor appointments would be available so soon (I was told to expect them in the New Year). I offered time and time again to use the deposit at their convenience when they had rooms free, but they said they had been lied to before and how did they know I was telling them the truth. I sent them copies of all the Mayo Clinic documentation showing the times and dates of the tests, doctors' appts., etc. Still they wouldn't compromise. I truly think that the owners of this B&B are not compassionate, honest or trustworthy. They only are interested in your money. I do not like leaving bad reviews but feel everyone should know what will happen if they need to cancel.
