Sleek family-friendly beach retreat on the Algarve with contemporary rooms, five pools and a mammoth spa
Set in 8 acres of pine forest, the EPIC SANA Hotel overlooks Falésia Beach on the Algarve, Portugal’s southernmost region and an area blessed with more than 300 days of sunshine a year. This sprawling beach retreat combines sleek and spacious guestrooms (the smallest measures 344 square feet), family-friendly amenities (two kids clubs and a playground) and tons of sporty activities, including five outdoor pools, as well as tennis and volleyball courts. The lobby is strewn with giant artworks, funky lights and columns wrapped in mosaic tiles, and the guestrooms are decorated with liberal splashes of bright green to reflect the lush countryside surrounding the resort. The pools are lined with chunky daybeds and chair hammocks, and the sizable spa offers eastern-inspired treatments in massage tents and a pavilion with a private Jacuzzi overlooking the sea. Dining options range from fancy Portuguese fare at Al Quimba to fresh seafood dishes served poolside at the Open Deck. Kick back with a post-dinner cocktail at the Bluum Bar, which is open until 1 a.m. year-round.
In the Area
The Algarve's coastline is punctuated by rocky headlands and cliffs, and some of Portugal's best beaches can be found in hidden coves and bays. Head for Praia de Albandeira, a jewel of a beach that is, surprisingly, off the tourist radar, or Praia do Barril, which forms part of Ria Formosa Natural Park. There are tons of golf courses in the area, including Pine Cliffs, Oceanico Victoria and Pinhal, in Vilamoura. Head for the hills to explore Silves Castle, one of the best-preserved Moorish fortifications in Portugal, or explore the Algarve's capital, Faro, home to a pretty marina and historic plazas lined with cafés.
