How to Get There
To describe the housekeeping as indifferent gives too much credit to them.
The waste basket was only partially emptied. The coffee service was not refreshed. One of the towels had a quarter-sized hole in it. The bed was not changed, only the comforter was pulled up. (No, I did not put out the card that said not to change the linens.) The floor was not vacuumed and there was obvious filth under the TV cabinet. The counter in the bathroom and the desk in the main room were obviously not wiped down. I'm getting grossed out remembering all that, so I'll stop.
Room service trays that were in the hall at 8pm we're still there at 8am. I was not acknowledged as a platinum for life Rewards member. It is just not a well-run property. I'll look elsewhere the next time.
This is the worst Westin I’ve ever stayed in and the management philosophy and quality control clearly does not understand the high quality level that goes with the price.
The room: Housekeeping clearly doesn’t care. Beds not made other than comforters being thrown over pillows (without even puffing the pillows). Clock radios flashing zero because no one can be bothered to reset the time on staff. (3 days). Trash in cans not emptied. Warm but no hot water at any point.
The laundry service: Go and chase down your stuff to find it. The delivery that isn’t made to the room until you’ve done the chasing. Quite the process.
Check In: Ooof. Sloppy at best. How many times do you need to ask for identification?
The Bar: Nice staff but when you are asking your customers to “trust” the staff on how much they are going to charge you because the “systems are down again”, it’s not exactly good. In the 2 hours witnessing the bar-charging fiasco, not one manager was in sight.
My basic assessment: this particular Westin hotel does not have good quality standards and is suffering from poor management oversight.
First, the good stuff. The hotel itself is very nice, and it's situated in an upscale area that seems to be growing around the hotel. More importantly, the front desk staff were very professional and helpful. We first were in a room that was adjacent to a family with loud children. When it seemed like the noise had no end, a very helpful lady at the front desk (I wish I'd noted her name) got us moved to another room, so we could enjoy our stay in peace.
Also, the housekeeping staff did an excellent job maintaining our room, and our requests for additional feather pillows and bath towels were fulfilled quickly and professionally.
Now, the problems. First, the beds in both rooms were uncomfortable. Maybe it's a matter of taste, but we both found ourselves with hurting backs. That's actually what had us requesting extra pillows. We used those to try to make things more comfortable with limited results. This was a multi-city stay, and of the three hotels we were in, this was the only one where we found the beds so uncomfortable. Considering this is a Westin, we expected a much more comfortable stay.
The other major shortcoming was breakfast. We're long-term Marriott customers. Now that the big merger occurred, we're trying some new properties, like this Westin. Marriott pretty reliably provides good food in their restaurants. This breakfast didn't meet that level of quality. There was a buffet that seemed to be the go-to choice for most. At the buffet, there was an omelet station, run by different cooks on different days, each of whom took their own approach to ruining an omelet. Well-cooked on one side and well-browned on the other isn't good. Crispy isn't good.
Then there are the rest of the buffet offerings. One morning, I decided to give the eggs a try. Except there weren't scrambled eggs. Instead, it was a "quiche." But it wasn't a quiche, it was some kind of crustless concoction that was tough. Yes, tough.
Yogurt wasn't in sealed containers. Instead, it had been put in glasses in small servings with tiny amounts of granola on the side. No regular cereal was offered, and there was no milk available. To try to get a better breakfast one morning, I ordered their smoked salmon breakfast off the menu. That didn't help things. Not just because the bagel was mediocre round bread (as opposed to anything resembling a real bagel) but because the whole meal was exceedingly underwhelming.
The coffee was good. I'll give them that.
Overall, the Westin was a good property but needs change if it's going to be great. I hope it manages to get there, but we didn't feel it met that level of quality on this visit.
First the Good: The location is fabulous, with a open air mall, several restaurants and a movie theatre all with in a 2 min walk. The front desk staff is fabulous as is housekeeping. The food choices are very limited but the quality is very good, from breakfast to bar appetizers - all excellent.
The Bad: The coffee shop in the lobby charges a different price everyday for the same product. Day 1 my lemonade was $1.09, very reasonable, even cheap. Day 2 the same lemonade was $4.36, when I asked why the price went up so much in one day the girl told me that the other girl made a mistake. I said fine as I thought $1.09 was really cheap. Day 3 the exact same lemonade was $2.18, I don't know how does the POS system even deal with this many different prices for the same product. Oh well that's what I get for ordering lemonade out of a box at a coffee shop.
Lastly the Ugly: The valet parking guy is NEVER in the front so finally after waiting for 10 minutes I just parked my own car in the valet spot, came in and asked the front desk for a ticket. They called the valet guy who showed up from somewhere behind the desk wall and wrote the ticket (yes I still tipped him but it irked me). I ordered breakfast up this morning and it came piping hot in a very reasonable about of time, however the room service guy realized he had left the condiments that went with my breakfast and he needed to go get them. I gave him an extra $5 on the already built in tip and he still took 15 minutes to bring back the condiments ... so my food was cold. Which was a shame as the food was perfectly cooked just needed a touch of salt and pepper. Finally, I really have to say that the 2 lobby bartenders are truly the worst I have ever encountered at a Starwoods property. The girl just never looked up and had to be called over anytime you needed a drink and then moved like molasses. I have no idea what her name was even after 4 days of being at the hotel and hotel bar. The guy was better when he wasn't texting, trading insults with his ex-girlfriend who was drinking next to me or arguing with the girl bartender, his name is Chris. I know this from the ex-girlfriend. From the two bartenders arguing somewhat loudly I also know neither one of them wanted to go home even though only one of them was supposed to be on shift as they were both broke. I really wanted to tell them to do a better job and then they would get better tips and not be broke. Alas, not my job to fix the terrible staff of this otherwise really lovely hotel.
Met many people staying here for work for multiple days and they all just rolled their eyes and made a game of it all. There were ongoing side bets on how long someones drink would remain empty before they were asked if they would like another. The record that I saw was 1 hour 25 minutes and it was the girl bartender! Congratulations on the win sweetie.
I have stayed at this property 4 times and the facilities are very nice and what you would expect from a Weston. The note is located in an upscale outdoor mall.
The staff is always so helpful. The last trip Kourtney at the front door was great.
The location is central to many areas of Huntsville.
