How to Get There
The Grand has been around for a loooong time and has become an institution of sorts for the Eastern Shore. It’s steeped in civil war history and the top room in the main building is constructed from the masts of old war ships from Mobile Bay. The grounds are southern Alabama at its best and most charming with big azaleas and oak trees dripping in Spanish moss. They are just finishing up a much needed remodel to the hotel rooms and common areas. Some of the locals don’t like it, but I think it is fabulous! The lobby is lighter and more open with a modern European feel. It’s comfy and quirky and nautical without being too much of any one thing. The hotel has lots of character and charm still and is a wonderful place to stay. The staff are super attentive and friendly and now the rooms and decor are updated. Tip- room service is awesome and the seafood gumbo is delicious!!! It’s loaded with lump crabmeat. I’m super picky about my gumbo, too!!! Once all renovations are complete, this will be an incredibly welcome my hotel.
Five generations of my family have stayed at the Grand Hotel. It is a gorgeous historic hotel under the canopy of oak trees and crepe myrtles. The spa is wonderful, the restaurants are worth visiting and the activities for children remind me of my childhood spent there. Worth every penny!
The Grand has so much to offer. We visit every year around Fahter's day and spend 4 days relaxing. This year we were caught up in renovations but it was only a slight disruption to our stay. The pool was as pleasant as ever and the fishing for my 14 year old was off the hook! (Pun intended)
His last evening he caught a beautiful Red Fish and that couldn't have been a better ending to our stay even if we had written it ourselves.
We arrived at this hotel and was met at their gated entry by a very cordial person at the gate. He directed us to the reception desk and pointed out the renovations going on in that area. Check in went smoothly and their front desk clerks were also very cordial.
We got to our room and noticed some cleanliness problems. Pieces of trash was found under the cushions on the sofa sleeper, and the carpeting was dirty looking in various spots. There is no microwave in the room, but it does have a mini fridge and Keurig coffee maker.
We hung out at the pool, which had very attentive staff working made sure you had drinks or food to eat. The pool had a fun water slide, neat hot tub with waterfalls and an adult section with pool and hot tub(but the pump that makes the bubbles didn't work very well).
Your daily resort fee of $30 provides you with an hour of use for the kayaks, paddleboats, bicycles, paddleboards, etc. They have their own little fishing pier and they provide cane poles and bait to enjoy some catch and release of the small grunt fish around there. Several hammocks around the property and also croquet and putting green areas.
Things I liked about this hotel was location because it was out of the way, it was across from their local golf course, it was about 25 minutes from Tanger Outlet in Foley and Lambert's(Home of the Throwed Rolls) restaurant to stuff yourself.
We have just returned from a 4 day stay at The Grand. Everything about the stay was faultless. Our suite in the Spa building was appointed to a very high standard and everything was on point during the stay.
The staff we encountered were very friendly, yet still professional and could not do enough for you. We had breakfast and dinner a number of times in the restaurant and used the new market style coffee bar in the main lobby and found them to be excellent.
Despite some poor weather we were still able to sample many of the great activities available at the beach area, putting green and the new golf experience.
Although there are renovations going on at the hotel we were not bothered one bit and in fact would not have know they were taking place if we hadn’t been told. Once they are finished in the very near future they will make The Grand even better!
We will definitely be returning and the visit was certainly worth the travel from Orlando.
A stay at The Grand should be on everyone’s bucket list!
