How to Get There
Very good, each room has a tremendous view of the crater. The staff is excellent; the food delicious. There is also a "resident" elephant that we were fortunate enough to see and get pictures of. The surroundings are wonderful and the rooms are very large, spacious and comfortable.
The hotel is situated on the lip overlooking the Ngorogoro caldera and a more beautiful place from which to view the area would be difficult to find. Upon arrival all of our Tauck tour group were greeted with warm, moist towels to wipe away any dust from the drive up as well as a refreshing fruit juice cocktail. Also awaiting our group was a group of local Masai who welcomed us with a traditional dance. Very interesting and a lot of fun.
The rooms are large, very comfortable and all have a balcony overlooking the caldera floor. Watching the clouds roll down into the caldera was a pleasure as were the stunning sunsets. Most incredible was the night sky. I had forgotten how many stars are out there. With no light pollution, the sky was an amazing show and the Milky Way was stretched across the sky in all its glory.
The hotel's restaurant allows guests to take in the great view and there is a large veranda to lounge about on. For those who like to walk a bit the hotel offers a one and a half hour walking tour of the area with a local guide who will explain about the terrain, animals land vegetation. It is a most worthwhile way to spend a bit of time and get some exercise as well.
By far however, the most impressive experience at Ngorogoro is the safari game drive down in the valley floor. This is truly a Garden of Eden. Lions, elephangs, hyenas, rhinos, hippos, wildebeast, buffalo, gazelles, zebras............you name it. Almost every African animal is found in Ngorogoro. To see them in their natural habitat, mingling with their own kind as well as others is truly a wondrous adventure that cannot be adequately described. It must be experienced.
I would heartily recommend visiting the Ngorogoro, staying at the Serena and having the opportunity of seeing the African wild life in a way that no zoo or nature program can hope to compete with.
As an aside, I traveled on a Tauck tour and am totally impressed with the way in which our African trip was organized. Our group was taken care of in all respects from day one to the our leaving. Many of our group had been on 8, 10, 14 Tauck tours before and a couple were up to 24 and 25. A great recommendation.
Great location - only ok hotel. This just feels like another western hotel dropped in Africa. Doesn’t deliver authentic feel for location but not many choices offer such ready access to crater. Loses a star as no coffee at 545am when tea available and front desk open. Crazy when so much coffee grown nearby.
