How to Get There
We thoroughly enjoyed our 5-night stay at Azura Benguerra. Management run a tight ship and staff are attentive. We didn’t want to leave our Infinity Suite but delicious fare beckoned us. Excellent excursions, remote picnics. Heaven.
This is a magical place. It truly met our hopes for an African beach paradise, even given how expensive it is.
The seas are a beautiful aqua and usually very calm, there are long stretches of deserted white sand and the beach villas are luxurious but have a natural feel. But two things in particular stand this hotel apart.
First, the staff are wonderfully friendly and make you feel so special. Your host looks after your every need and serves you at every meal, so you can get to know them a bit, which we loved. Thanks so much to Abel, Simoes and Eric for making our stay so perfect!
Second, although the resort is very quiet and secluded, we liked that local people live and work on the island, so you can experience something of Mozambique culture which doesn’t happen at other island resorts. The hotel is very involved locally, helping to sponsor an island primary school and health clinic and many of the staff are islanders. We really enjoyed the complimentary island drive where Eric showed us all of this, as well as the indigenous wildlife and plants. The restaurant is supplied by local fishermen and the school children came and danced and sang one evening.
Other points to note: the food is superb. It’s not as fancy as some might expect for the price tag of the hotel, but we preferred that. The menu changes every day depending on what has been caught that day - the freshest seafood we have ever eaten! The menus are really appealing and the chef is fantastic at both local dishes and more western ones.
Other reviews complain about the tides going out. This was not an issue at all. The tide is in for the majority of the day and when it is out you could walk out to swim if you want.
The helicopter transfer was very smooth and great views! I do not like flying at all and it was completely fine (and only about 7 mins long!)
As well as the complimentary island drive, we did the free dhow sunset cruise, which was really fun. I get seasick and the water was so flat we had no trouble at all! We only did one paying activity, as they are very expensive (and the winds got up on a couple of days so I thought the sea might be a bit choppy for me). It was the tour to Paradise Island, which was totally brilliant. A 45 min speed boat ride but across completely flat seas. A pod of dolphins played around our boat in both directions! We then snorkelled with Eric in crystal clear water, seeing masses of rays (including a manta ray), turtles and tons of beautiful fish. We then walked around the island, and had a perfect picnic on the beach.
Overall, a very special stay - thank you to everyone there! We are sad to have left and hope very much to come back one day.
We first came here in 2013 and had an amazing time - second time around didn’t disappoint
The location is stunning and the vibe is laidback (whilst there are activities for those who want them don’t expect late nights and partying)
What makes the place special though is the effort put in by the Mozambiquean hosts and those running the boat trips - we enjoyed meals in different locations and a great island hopping excursion - thanks to Julio and Carlos for making our stay so special
