How to Get There
Location - A stunning stretch of white sand and turquoise waters within a protected lagoon close to Grand Baie.
Property - A mix between pretty thatched bungalows in a garden setting and the main building. The main building is an older style however no higher than the palm trees which is great.
Service - We felt truly welcomed. We first visited 13 years ago for our honeymoon and this was our 5th visit. Several staff recognised us and went out of their way to say hello and make us welcome. The staff were all positive and friendly. Special thanks to Anacia and Chandon again for really trying all they could to make our visit special. The wider team looked after us with a great blend of warmth and professionalism we were especially looked after by Prakash, Kalash, Vishni, Vimal, Ramen and Shekir. The management team who are included here plus front desk manager Vikram, sports/entertainment manager Edleigh, senior manager Tony Duval all were brilliantly visible and welcoming towards us which was lovely.
Food - A good variety where the local food especially was appreciated.
Rooms - Light, spacious and the housekeeping team took visible pride in taking care of the rooms.
Facilities - It is a 3 star hotel and some areas are a little tired. The beautiful location and warm service mean this is not relevant. Added bonus is Ashok for yoga twice a week and Cristoff for QiKong once a week. Edleigh has sourced here two very caring and inspirational instructors and more classes would be great! The watersports team made our holiday extra special again. They are expertly led by Fazal with Raj meaning our days were filled! The watersports centre offers so much free fun, expertise and help with snorkel trips, waterskiing, paddle boarding, sailing and kayaks which we did every day plus windsurfing and trips. Special thanks to Will & Eric on waterski boat and all of the snorkel boat team. On site Orca dive team welcomed us back - thank you Rajiv especially and all the supportive dive boat crew. The coral reef here is really worth exploring.
Overall - Totally recommend and a big thank you to all the team.
This hotel exceeded my expectations. As a 3 star hotel I expected to be have som complaints, but no. The beds are a bit hard and the hotel is a little bit worn, but so much better the expected. We probably had one of the cheapest rooms (a double room on the groundfloor), I'm sure that if you are willing to spend more it could be even nicer.
It's located on a beautiful beach, there's free activites and the hotel grounds are pleasant. The hotel is well suited for families with kids. Shallow calm water perfect for kids.
The staff were all friendly and helpful. Everyone from the Boathouse crew to the security guards acknowledge our daughter with smiles and hellos. We got great help from Khalida, who runds the towel kiosk, always pleasant, helpful and up for a little chat. Anacia in the restaurant might have been the best restaurant staff I've ever met, so very observant of all her guests.
We had only breakfast, not full board. We did try the buff'e, it was totally OK.
We had lunch at the veranda restaurant by the most days, not a big choice but more than enough.
For dinner we went to Poivrier (a must visit) next door, or to one of the many restaurant in central Grand Baie. Worth recomending are Le Rougaille Creole, Sauterelle and La Terasse. All very popular, so make reservations.
I had no expectations and was very pleasently surprised!
+ outstanding friendly staff
+ because of our late arrival we did get a cold diner to our room even though we only booked bed&brekfast
+ good breakfast and quick service
+ clean rooms (allthough due to the climate there r a lot of insects)
+ stunning and calm location right next to the beach
+ excelent spa treatments
+ free wifi (with good reception at our room 222)
+ free pool and beach towels
+ a bunch of free activites like watersports
+ free parking on the other side of the hotel
- the hotel is nearly 50 years old, so it is in need in some improvements (like fresh paint)
- not a cheap place to stay at
Just came back from a week end break at Le Merville Beach hotel. The family room was ok and most of them are seafacing.
Since there are barely any families with young children, the kids club didnt have any activities. We previously had been to the Beachcomber hotels and the children felt really welcome with loads of activities and other goodies to keep them entertained.
Breakfast buffet was ok, however the dinner buffet lacks variety and the chinese buffet was very disappointing.
We arrived home today after my 3rd visit to the Merville. My last visit was around 8 years ago and some things have changed but not all of them for the better.
The hotel is situated on a little piece of Heaven. The beach, the sea and the views are all fabulous. We stayed in the original part of the hotel and even though the rooms had changed very little since my first visit 12 years ago, they are spacious and provide everything you need for a comfortable stay. Our room cleaner Jean Patrice was a star. Always smiling and did a really good job of cleaning our room and looking after us.
We paid for an all inclusive stay and it was quite expensive. The breakfasts and a la carte lunches were tasty and freshly made but the evening buffet dinners were dreadful. The food often looked unappetising, was often barely warm, I had chicken which was still pink in the middle, beef which was too tough to chew, dauphinoise potato which was undercooked and that`s just 3 instances. Food regularly looked as if it had just been dumped in the trays and there was no finesse , nothing special and it resembled canteen food you could buy anywhere. I really missed the classy buffets they used to do, wonderfully arranged and displayed and they`d have evening meals with a party atmosphere . set around the pool area and the beach and you`d mingle with the staff as well as other diners.
There were salads but not much to eat with them. It would be good to have at least one cold meat on offer each evening so if people dislike the cooked food they can at least make a meal of salad and cold ham, turkey or whatever. All in all the evening meals really let them down.
It was also a bit of a disappointment to be served luke warm drinks such as bottled water, soft drinks etc which had been barely chilled. There`s nothing tasty about luke warm coke when it`s a hot day. Bar service was sometimes very slow but the young staff tried their best.
Tweak a few things and the Merville could return to her former glory. I`d return to Mauritius in a heartbeat but I`m afraid I`d have to think twice about returning again to the Merville.
