When Anantara’s first hotel in Oman opened in 2016 on the edge of the rocky Saiq Plateau, it became the highest five-star hotel in the Middle East—and, instantaneously, one of the best cliffside hotels in the world. Of the 115 accommodations, the Cliff Pool Villas feature private infinity pools that jut out precariously over the mountain rim, 6,500 feet above sea level. There’s a public infinity pool for everyone else; when not taking a dip or chowing down on Omani and international cuisine at own of the resort’s six restaurants, head to the spa for decadent treatments, to the kitchen for a cooking class, or to the Hajar mountain range for a heart-pumping climb.
In the Area
When you stay at Anantara Al Jabal Al Akhdar Resort in Sayq, you’ll be within the region of Ar Ridaydah Castle.
How to Get There
A location does not define a hotel. (it helps, but does define the hotel). I would have given much higher ratings for with the exception of being confronted by one of the hotel managers in front of his employees and others in the lobby.
We booked two excellent tours via the hotel. 1. Three Villages Tour 2. Jebel Shams Tour. Both were excellent and both tour guides were excellent. For some unknown reason, it got back to one of the managers I was not happy with the Three Villages Tour. This could not be further from the truth. It was excellent. The main issue was he confronted me with his concerns right after we exited the car in front of the hotel. WRONG PLACE and TIME. He accused me of being disappointed, which again was wrong (even if right--don't pick an open area to voice concerns---especially toward your guests).
The breakfast and dinner that came with the room were good, not great. Breakfast food was better than dinner food. I found that several things were just overcooked (happens when you cook in bulk. The service staff was excellent. Very friendly.
The views from the hotel are outstanding. Again, the views would be there even if not for the hotel. One problem the hotel will face in the future is a "total eyesore" is being built in clear view of the hotel. I guess it is a house of a Royal Family from another country. It is huge and one cannot miss it. Thus, views will not just be natural and old villages anymore.
I found the hotel environment to be very stiff. It was not relaxing and while the hotel grounds are beautiful and the surrounding nature is beautiful, the hotel was just not the most relaxing in my opinion. Probably because the management of the hotel was just uptight and stiff in my opinion.
Hotel Staff/Restaurant/Tour Staff: A++++
Hotel Management/Tour Management: D- (very uptights and confrontational).
We highly recommend this hotel as the guest rooms are very spacious and the private pool in our room was quite big and heated. There are several restaurants all of which served a variety of foods, all of which were delicious. This is definitely one of the top Anantara properties.
Booked a mountain canyon view room. Spectacular view. Gorgeous bathroom suite. Excellent food at the buffet breakfast and supper. Exceptional service. Perfect get-away from it all weekend. Arguably the best no additional charge in room movie and music system I have ever seen in any hotel suite anywhere in the world. Slightly spotty WiFi, but with everything else on offer, we really didn’t care...
Absolutely incredible hotel, loved our room and the views were stunning. It had a real wow factor to it. You need a 4x4 car to get you up that mountain but what a treat when you get there. The food is so good, loved the breakfast as there was so much choice. Would love to go back, such a treat.
If you want to totally relax and get away from your busy lives go to the Anantara. The ambience makes you forget the outside world. The knowledge of the staff is wonderful. We had a history lesson on the 3 village walk which made us aware of our surroundings and the transfer to Muscat was fascinating. Our driver was a font of all knowledge. Thank you !
