Luxe Art Deco–inspired skyscraper overlooking Abu Dhabi's Corniche with a sublime spa and elegant piano bar
Inspired by the paintings of 20th-century French artist Pierre Soulages, known as "the painter of black," the palette running through the hotel is almost exclusively monochrome; reproductions of Soulages's paintings, predominantly composed of bold black brush strokes, hang on the walls throughout the hotel. Walk into the glittering, high-ceilinged lobby on a busy Thursday evening and you'll be struck by the Gallic elegance of this traditional five-star hotel.
Bed and Bath
The black-and-white theme carries through to the guestrooms, the addition of a beige swirl to the patterned carpet being the only exception. Each room has a Soulages print on the wall. The beds, which have floor-to-ceiling leather headboards, are firm and extremely comfortable, but the highlight is the bathrooms. Separated by a sliding screen, they feature freestanding tubs, powerful rain showers and designer toiletries (Lanvin in standard rooms, Hermès in premium rooms). Rooms don't have balconies, but they all overlook the Corniche.
There are numerous options for dinner and drinks. Thai restaurant Silk & Spice has sunken tables and offers traditional kneel-down service; La Mer specializes in seafood from the gulf. Tea and Arabic pastries are served at the Le Café lobby lounge, and the Corniche All Day Dining spot offers Arabic and European buffet dishes. Sip cocktails at Jazz 'N' Fizz, a piano bar with a cigar bar and live Cuban band. The Sofitel So Fit gym provides gym nuts with state-of-the-art Technogym equipment, a selection of free weights and the option of a personal trainer, while the intimate So Spa has five treatment rooms, two hammams, a sauna and a steamroom, and an extensive spa menu incorporating products from Carita and Cinq Mondes.
