Set on the French-Swiss border, the charming village-resort of Châtel offers all sorts of sports and fun, from skiing and snowmobiling in the winter to biking and hiking in the summer, with paragliding, climbing and zip-lining thrown in for good measure.
Headed up by the Macchi family since the 1970s, four-star Hotel Macchi is full of intimacy and personal touches, from the warming cuisine straight through to the cozy décor. Add to that a spa with Ayurvedic massages, mountain views, a sauna and swimming pool plus a roaring fire in the lounge, and you’ve everything you need for a traditional chalet break in picturesque Haute-Savoie.
How to Get There
The staff is very friendly and nice, the food was amazing and the hotel is at walking distance of nearly everything, there’s also a bus stop right in front of it so it’s very easy to move around ! We had the best holiday! Definitely recommend!
We went as a group of three families (six children) for a four-day ski holiday. The hotel could not have been more accommodating. The ski hire shop in the hotel provided excellent equipment and transfers to/from ski slopes, the reception organised ski passes and transfers to/from airports. Breakfast was among the best (through stronger coffee required!). Half-board dinner limited, but delicious - and you can always order al la carte. Rooms were large (though they could have been better lit), and the hotel was happy to set up a three-boys room and a three girls room: no problem! Free crepes in the bar after each day's skiing. A relaxing holiday for us, made possible by the hard work of the hotel staff. I am only sorry that there was no time to try the spa and swimming pool..
Beautiful hotel run by a very welcoming family. Room was very comfortable with all amenities. Good shower and full size bath with excellent quality towels. Slight niggle was that housekeeping didn’t replace shampoo or tea.
Breakfast is good - fruit, pastries, yogurt, breads and cheeses. However the boiled eggs we had were under cooked and the omelet was very average.
There are ski lockers and a hotel bus that takes you to the far lift every day (easy access to Chatel and Avoriaz) but you will need to get the public bus back and walk for a few minutes. After the first day we drove our car to the lift and parked it for free, this was the easiest option. There is a lift quite close - Super Chatel, which is a few minutes walk. There is also a ski shop on site which was very handy and we had our skis serviced.
The spa is excellent and the massage amazing.
We would stay here again as it’s a lovely hotel, but because it’s reasonably expensive, we would have expected no niggles. A strong 4 and half stars.
We chose Hotel Macchi as a base for a short skiing trip.
The welcome was genuine and warm, with a short tour of all the facilities. Nothing was too much trouble for the team. The entire hotel was spotlessly clean and everything worked well.
Food = well cooked and presented, with a good level of choice and variety. Breakfast buffet was well stocked and anything else you needed was delivered with a smile!
Wine = great regional and national list, with good advice on hand if you wanted it
Room = comfortable and clean. Plenty of towels + a bag of extra towels, robes and slides for the spa area, which was modern and well equipped
Staff = genuinely friendly and attentive. Good English, happy if we tried our French on them too.
Atmosphere = relaxed and homely. Clearly family run with pride and passion
Location = excellent - middle of the village, but no noise..two minutes walk to the centre. 30 seconds to the bus stop for a 10 minute ride to the slopes. Hotel shuttle to the lifts at the top of chatel village.
In summary, excellent rating well deserved. Already planning our return.
This was our 2nd visit to hotel Macchi, as before the standards were high and the staff wonderful!
Restaurant is 1st class.
On-site ski rental, spa, pool & hot tub just add to the great experience.
ideally located on the outskirts of Châtel, everything is within easy walking distance.
Free on site parking.
