On the grounds of a former coconut plantation on the Thai island’s still-secluded northwest coast, the 83 over-the-top villas of Anantara Phuket are draped in bougainvillea and have pools, daybeds, rain showers and — thanks to wood fences — an intensely private vibe. With an excellent spa, an infinity pool and a spot on quiet Mai Khao Beach, this resort exudes romance.

              What we love

              • The Jetsetter rate includes breakfast daily
              • A romantic vibe and a quiet, pretty beach
              • All villas have private pools
              • There are four restaurants; the beachfront Sea.Fire.Salt even has a salt sommelier
              • Staff can arrange activities (elephant trekking, cooking classes, kayaking)

              What to know

              • The weather here is steady year-round, but there is a short rainy season from September to October
              • It’s a 30-minute drive to the town of Phuket
              • Expect couples and honeymooners; probably not the best for singles
              • The spa is open until 10 p.m.
              • Activities cost extra

              Why to go

              • Beaches & Islands
              • Design
              • Tropical

              Anantara Phuket Villas

              Jetsetter review

On quiet, six-mile Mai Khao Beach, Anantara Phuket Villas delivers a decadent take on classic Thai design. And while the 83 villas exude exclusivity, the vibe here remains romantic and tranquil.

La Sala serves traditional Sicilian dishes paired with Mediterranean wines.
After checking into your villa, there’s a good chance you might not want to leave. These private sanctuaries are home to pools flanked by palm trees, daybeds swathed in silk and alfresco bathtubs. Inside, there’s a huge bed dressed in soft white linens and surrounded by raw silk and carved teak accents.

It’s certainly tempting to stay here, but the grounds are as impressive as the villas. The main infinity pool overlooks the Andaman Sea. There’s also a state-of-the-art spa with five open-air treatment rooms (two of which have soaking tubs). Try a Thai herbal compress massage that begins with a floral foot ritual. If you’re jetlagged, this is the place to go first.

All four restaurants are excellent; they include the Tree House, featuring a menu of tapas. You’ll dine high above the trees here; the dining room is accessed by a staircase wrapped around a Banyan Tree. Sea.Fire.Salt serves up fresh-caught seafood in a barbeque style, complete with a tableside salt sommelier who will properly season your dinner.

Many of the little touches made my stay feel special, from the essential oil bath products and the refillable water bottle to the espresso machine and iPads at the on-site coffee shop. The Anantara brand is also known for its focus on activities, and each day the resort’s staff offers a range of organized and do-it-yourself adventures in the surrounding area, like elephant trekking and traditional cooking lessons.

Naturally, doing nothing is a viable option here — the resort’s main infinity pool has a bar serving up margaritas with custom salt rims, with flavors from hickory-smoked to black truffle.

              What to do

              • Dive. Take a day cruise to the remote Similan Islands for some of the best diving in southern Thailand.
              • Visit. Visit the Gibbon Rehabilitation Project. One of the most inspiring animal rescue ventures in Thailand, the organization uses progressive conservation techniques to successfully reintroduce gibbons to the wild.
              • Cook. The hotel runs its own cooking school, and you can spend an afternoon chopping, mixing and blending ingredients into Thailand's most famous dishes — and you get to take the recipes home with you.
              • Trek. Explore the lush jungle and waterfalls of Sirinath National Park from atop Thailand's most revered animal. The relationship between these gentle giants and their mahout (trainer) is often forged over decades.
              • Indulge. The Anantara Phuket has a sensational spa where treatments are offered under outdoor salas or in your room. The 120-minute signature massage is perfect for soothing muscles sore from elephant-back riding or jetlag.

This was my first jetsetter booking - I was apprehensive that the pics on the site were marketing glitz - thankfully not so! The property was glorious - just as beautiful as the pics, well maintained, the staff was super attentive...

                Nothing to speak of.

Staff knew you by name, very attentive, beautiful resort, villa was to die for (just like I pictured it).

                What I disliked

Not much to do around the area (can be a pro or a con) and can really only move around by cab, restaurant food is delicious yet steeply priced

              • What I liked

Amazing property and service. We couldn't have asked for a better experience (even exceeding the Thai standard of service).

                What I disliked

Someone tried to sell us their vacation club every day we were there.

Everything about this hotel was simply amazing. From the rooms, to the pool to the level of service. I would highly recommend this place and was sad to leave.

                What I disliked

There was absolutelty nothing to dislike...even though our room wasnt avaliable to check into until 2 hours past the promised time...the hotel allowed us to use the spa to change/shower and comped our lunch and drinks and were very apologetic. The place itself was so amazing that we didn't care at all!!

Service was excellent and everyone makes you feel so welcomed Very polite staff from ground keeper to manager.

                What I disliked

The two hour dinner length of dinner at Sea And salt restaurant Very slow service. Couldn't wait to go back to room. Ridiculous.

The villa was great. The private pool was a good size and the garden was very private. Skinny dipping - no problem!

                What I disliked

Food in the restaurant was only so-so. Breakfast buffet was very good though.
