              About your stay

              By Chanize Thorpe, Jetsetter Correspondent

This eight-night/nine-day itinerary takes the ultimate African fantasy vacation and adds some feel-good uthando — Zulu for love. After a few days of volunteering for Cape Town’s Uthando Project, you’ll take off for game drives and bush walks in Sabi Sands, a 160,000-acre reserve that borders Kruger National Park. Extraordinary Journeys put this itinerary together for travelers who are just as interested in sustaining village communities as they are in spotting elephant tribes on safari. And taking the time for both on this trip gives you eye-opening access to the South Africa you’d never get to see on a cookie-cutter tour.

              What we love

              • Rate includes eight nights accommodations, internal flights, game drives and most meals, drinks and activities as outlined in the itinerary
              • Close encounters with the Big Five, including the often elusive leopard
              • Volunteering time for rewarding community service while on vacation
              • Gaining insight into local living — this trip is very much off the tourist track
              • Two types of luxury lodging: the mod Pod Hotel in Cape Town and the decadent Djuma Vuyatela Lodge in the Sabi Sands Reserve
              • Group size will be a maximum of 8

              What to know

              • International flights and gratuities for guides and drivers are not included in the rate
              • Pack light — there’s a (strictly enforced) limit of 44 pounds on small planes in southern Africa
              • Meals that aren't included are on your own in Cape Town or at the lodge
              • Comprehensive medical and travel insurance is required (not available through Jetsetter)
              • You must have at least two blank pages in your passport for entry into South Africa
              • U.S. citizens are required to obtain a tourist visa, which can be done through consulate offices in the U.S. or at the airport/border when you arrive
              • The CDC recommends vaccines for Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, Tyhpoid and Rabies along with routine vaccinations
              • Consider taking antimalarial medication for safari safety
