La Samanna is a place where bottle service and beachside yoga go hand in hand, and the only deciding factor is the mood of the day. This is the elegant way to do St. Martin. On the French side of the island, the property has a private Caribbean beach, an easygoing island vibe and all the requisite beach activities — but also fine European service and dining. No wonder it’s been visited by everyone from Diddy to Jackie O.

              What we love

              • A world-class private beach, complete with butler service
              • Celebrity-quality service without a stuffy, formal vibe
              • Most rooms feature private terraces and all have Caribbean views
              • Yoga, tennis, Pilates and fitness classes are all available
              • The fantastic wine cellar, La Cave, holds 12,000 bottles
              • Complimentary WiFi
              • Self parking is complimentary

              What to know

              • The main restaurant, Le Réservé, will be closed in August to undergo renovation; there will be limited food-and-beverage service at the beach bar at that time
              • Children six and under are not permitted in the main restaurant for dinner
              • Hotel-booked airport transfers are pricey ($88 each way) compared with readily available taxis ($20 each way)
              • An 11 percent resort fee and a 4 percent government tax per night will be collected at the Jetsetter checkout

              Why to go

              • Adventure
              • Beaches & Islands

              La Samanna Resort and Spa

              Jetsetter review

St. Martin has a distinctly Côte d’Azur feel without all the scene-iness of St. Barth’s. Ditto for La Samanna, which achieves a rare blend of elegant and low-key, fusing high-touch service with a laid-back Caribbean vibe.

The two-story whitewashed resort overlooks one of the few private beaches in the Caribbean, and butler service takes care of your every need while you sunbathe. Even better, unlike some other nearby islands, its a cinch to get here; no extra flights or ferry rides required. No wonder celebrities ranging from Oprah to P. Diddy to Jackie O have all stayed at La Samanna.

Le Réservé Restaurant is airy and sunny during the day, with bright Caribbean views.
Activities abound here. Kayaking, snorkeling, Pilates, yoga, tennis, and more are all complimentary. There are two pools for swimming and sunning (in the unlikely event that you get tired of the beach). And scuba diving and sailing charters are easily arranged through the concierge.

Dining, too, is an activity to remember here: There are several dining and drinking options around the property, but the showpiece is Le Réservé, a proper French restaurant set on the edge of the beach, with open-air seating.

Despite my resolute desire to power-tan and engage in salty beach reading all day, I eventually borrowed some of the free snorkel equipment for a dip in the sea. The water is warm and inviting and the current is peaceful.

There are 83 rooms and suites at La Samanna, and each of them looks out over the sea. My last evening was spent on the terrace of my oceanfront room, taking in the view and perusing the hotel’s famed wine list (there are 12,000 bottles in the cellar, La Cave). I settled on a bottle of Sancerre and within 10 minutes it arrived in a silver ice bucket, ready for me to toast the setting sun.

              What to do

              • Escape. Feel like a castaway on neighboring Pinel Island, a sand spit with coconut palms, white sand beach and excellent snorkeling. Take the ferry or a trip with one of the many boat vendors awaiting your business and check out the tiki bar for grilled lobster served right on the beach.
              • Relax. Call your cabana boy all day long with the resort’s daily thatch-roofed cabana rentals, ideal for guests staying up on the bluff. The wraparound couch, WiFi and butler service make idling the day away truly effortless.
              • Rejuvenate. Soothe your skin with the sunburn rescue treatment at the spa. The hour-long treatment includes a body wrap of pure aloe plus two giveaway products for subsequent personal treatment.
              • Local. Check out the open-air Marigot Market on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Located along the wharf just below Fort St. Louis, the food market presents all the fresh produce, spices and daily catch from St. Martin and neighboring islands, plus enough samples to satisfy your adventuresome culinary spirit.

              • What I liked

The Jetsetter sale made it possible for my boyfriend and I to stay at the best hotel on the island of St. Martin. The scenery was breathtaking, the beach was quiet and lovely, the service was wonderful. They even upgraded us upon arrival to a suite, which had a porch overlooking the water. I can't say enough about La Samanna.

                What I disliked

I'm guessing that because we went during the "low season," only one restaurant was open during our stay, so we wound up there three nights in a row with the same menu. The food was fabulous, though, so I guess I can't really complain!

                Not worth $1000 per night...maybe $500.00.

would have liked a/c in the main building dining area, but not that big a deal.
