First the Mondrian took over L.A. and South Beach, creating buzzworthy scenes in cities that have seen it all. Then the brand launched in downtown New York (Soho, to be specific), with a 270-room glass-and-steel masterpiece that keeps even the most jaded residents angling for a peek. With floor-to-ceiling windows, stellar views and a seafood restaurant enclosed in a chandelier-filled greenhouse, the Mondrian Soho continues to make major waves in Manhattan.

              What we love

              • Book by March 31 to save 25 percent off of retail rates on stays three nights or longer
              • Rates include complimentary high-speed internet; the Deluxe King Suites also come with two complimentary beverages (valid at Imperial bar) and a guaranteed late checkout at 2 p.m.
              • Prime Soho location for downtown shopping
              • An iPad in every room
              • Easy access to the on-site restaurant (Imperial No. 9) and bar
              • Excellent views of Manhattan

              What to know

              • Many Deluxe Rooms have showers with large glass walls; not for the faint of heart (or the unsexy)
              • Superior Rooms are small, at 205 square feet
              • Mister H bar is not owned by the Mondrian, so there’s no special access for guests

              Why to go

              Mondrian Soho

              Jetsetter review

The Mondrian brand is known for plush amenities, cool customers and up-to-the-millisecond design…which is why it’s surprising to learn that their first New York outpost is actually inspired by a 1946 movie, La Belle et la Bête. Designer Benjamin Noriega-Ortiz has updated the original Beauty and the Beast (not to be confused with any later version), delivering a hotel of royal blues and sharp silvers, and romantic yet contemporary finishes.

The exterior, on Crosby Street, fits visually into the rest of the block, with a 14-foot-high entrance matching up with the architecture of neighboring buildings. The hotel presents no signage; those who know where they should be will find their way (aided, perhaps, by a huge ivy-colored trellis and wrought iron chandeliers that feel more South of France than South of Houston).

After walking through a garden area, guests enter a lobby lounge of light blues and whites, with a silver rose pattern on the ceiling and furry lavender lamps surrounding posh young attendants. From here visitors can enter the large, chandelier-filled greenhouse bar of Imperial No. 9. Off the Lafayette Street entrance, guests can try their luck at Mister H, the hip Shanghai-style bar, where guests are admitted upon the doorman’s discretion.

Rooms have gorgeous views of New York all around — many right from the shower.
After checking in on the second floor, guests travel up in sexy, dimly lit elevators to their “sleeping chambers” (the term guestroom is apparently too old-school). The hallways are surprisingly bright, with blond-wood floors and lots of light, while the guestrooms are carpeted in royal blues and come with 10-foot floor-to-ceiling windows. Instead of a traditional room service menu, there’s an iPad in every room, which guests can use to order everything from food (24 hours a day) to golden handcuffs from nearby Kiki de Montparnasse (hopefully, after dark only).

The showers in Standard Rooms can be a bit small, while in Deluxe Rooms, non-tinted half-length windows give you a view of Soho — and Soho of you. It’s not for the faint of heart (or the unsexy), unless you give the shower some time to steam the windows. On a similar note, all guestrooms lack one common amenity: artwork on the walls. With views of Midtown and Downtown all around (and most of Manhattan’s bridges from the higher floors), the rooms frame New York like a piece of art.

              What to do

              • Immigrate. The Lower East Side Tenement Museum has quickly become one of the most famous museums in all of New York, recreating the lives of actual immigrants on the Lower East Side in a brutally honest, oddly inspirational way.
              • Shop. Don’t let its location at Canal Street and Broadway fool you: Pearl River is a superstore of Asian tchotchkes, home furnishings and more.
              • Dish. For a late night eatery that’s both glam and low-key, head to Blue Ribbon. With deliciously fresh fish and excellent Sake selection, expect a wait once the sun goes down.
              • Grub. Dive into old-school burgers and beer at Fanelli’s Cafe (94 Prince St.). This traditional Soho spot has a low-key vibe that’s perfect for serious burger lovers.
              • Sip. Experience Portuguese-Chinese fusion and killer cocktails at Macao, a swank drink den in Tribeca. Be sure to order the Drunken Dragon’s Milk, green-tea vodka blended with coconut purée, pandan syrup, Chinese five-spice bitters and Thai basil.

The Mondrian Soho is a beautiful hotel - very chic, hip & really cool. I loved the design of the hotel. The view from the higher floors is breathtaking. It somehow feels like the South of France in New York. Loved it!

                What I disliked

We had to stay on a lower floor for the first night as everything was booked.

Exceptionally attentive and friendly staff. Amazing view from the 23rd floor. Cleverly designed space for a (small) New York-sized room. Very comfortable bed. Large well-equipped shower.

                What I disliked

Small sink area with dim lighting...could have been brighter with more storage space.

Great room/suite with fantastic view of the city. A good value for the price. This really is a 4 star property.

Staff are very helpful and attentive. They are willing to try to fulfill requests . The bellmen were especially helpful.

This soho location is perfect for getting a feel for the neighbourhood and is convenient .

                What I disliked

I told them it was my husband's 40th birthday and they didn't do anything, we asked about getting into the club and they said we should go at 11, we went only to get turned down because we didn't have a reservation....the shower wouldn't shut after we used it...
