Get ready for a taste of Paris in Manhattan at this Midtown charmer. The Sofitel offers a mixture of French elegance, American comfort and a little Art Deco flair. On 44th Street between Fifth and Sixth Avenues, and just a stone’s throw from Times Square and the Theater District, the Sofitel’s location is as ideal as its comfortable rooms and its sleek 30-story glass and limestone facade.

Hotel Sofitel New York

Jetsetter review

On 44th street, this 30-story curved limestone and glass skyscraper is in Manhattan’s neon heart. Soaring over famed Fifth Avenue, the Sofitel New York has the ideal Midtown location for sightseeing. Walk uptown and you reach Radio City Music Hall and the winter romance of Rockefeller Plaza, and a little bit west leads to Broadway theaters and Times Square.

The marble bathrooms — with oversize soaking tubs, orchids and candles — are quiet and calming.
Location aside, this hotel fuses French chic with American flair; it has a girl-next-door sex appeal that exudes joie de vivre. Cocoon-like comforts such as the cozy Gaby bar and restaurant and feathertop beds give the Sofitel extra warmth even on the gloomiest winter days. The Art Deco motif in the lobby and guestrooms is reminiscent of both Paris and New York.

Inside the sleek tower, public areas have rich marble floors and a formal sitting room with modern artwork on teak walls. On the way to the guestrooms, elevators contain Paris or New York backdrops that showcase planes, trains and automobiles from both sides of the Atlantic.

They may call New York the city that never sleeps, but when you book a stay at the Sofitel — with its tranquil, soundproof rooms, heavy drapes, feathertop mattresses and thick down duvets — you will find peaceful slumber if you choose.

The rooms, while not enormous, make the most of limited space with soothing colors, soft lighting and modern design. I love the oh-so-French touches like Francophone news and Hermés bath products. The Prestige Suites are on the hotel’s upper floors and come with expansive skyline views from private terraces and space to get lost in.

What to do

  • Read. Less than three blocks away, the New York Public Library, on the National Register of Historic Places, houses one of the world's largest rare book collections. Complimentary tours are available Monday to Saturday.
  • Eat. Folding window walls look out on the city at the Sofitel's street-level brasserie, Gaby. The Art Deco café is decorated with prints from French films, mirrored columns, banquettes and even green marble floors.
  • Watch. The theater district is just a few blocks away. For serious savings, head to the half-price tickets booth TKTS. Tickets are sold the day of the show, so be flexible and bring cash.
  • Peek. Check out the fanciful windows at Bergdorf Goodman – just a bit north on 57th Street.

  • What I liked

Large room! More space than I needed (that's a rare find in New York!). Two bottles of Evian at turndown. Great amenities in the big, marble bathroom.

Friendly staff. Very helpful with restaurant suggestions and directions.

Perfect location for Rockefeller Center, Bryant Park, & Times Square. Could walk to Central Park in 10 mins.

    What I disliked

Nothing. I honestly can't think of anything! Everything was great.

  • What I liked

Everything about this hotel was first rate from its location on a quiet part of 44th street to its public areas and beautiful rooms. The building seemed fairly new and all of the rooms were extremely nice, spacious and quiet. We stayed in a beautiful suite. The staff was very helpful. The location near Grand Central allowed us to be very close to several subway lines running along the West and East sides.

    What I disliked

    Nothing
