Citadels of Chic. The Gold Standard. Even un hotel en Technicolor. The Standard Hotels have been called a lot of things, but never once "boring." Hotel provocateur Andre Balazs has upped the wow factor once again with the Standard, New York, a temple of all things sexy and sceney, in a building that literally straddles the High Line park in the Meatpacking District.

The Standard, New York

Jetsetter review

Like its sister properties, The Standard, New York, makes a statement: Look at me. The New York Observer called it "the most unusual and significant building in years," and with good reason — it's a monument to all things hip and high-end that every New Yorker has an opinion on.

My personal opinion is that it's a Le Corbusier sketch come to life, with a little UN building thrown in for good measure. Anyone who's walked along the High Line, the brilliant park built on an old elevated rail line that runs directly underneath The Standard, New York, has seen how the building owns the Meatpacking District skyline.

Floor-to-ceiling views let the light in from all directions.
If unrestrained views and heights make you queasy, this may not be your hotel; all 338 rooms feature floor-to-ceiling views of the Hudson or the city. As the media has pointed out, some guests have made use of the windows the other way around. Rooms feature oversize bathrooms with "peek-a-boo" walls that expose the bathroom to the living space: Shy shower-takers, get ready.

Curved wooden ceilings give the rooms a sense of continuity from top to bottom. It's hard to be sure where the ceiling ends and the wall begins, or where the shower separates from the bedroom. I learned not to sweat it — it's all part of the fun.

In general, The Standard, New York, is not a place for the timid. The biergarten downstairs is perpetually jammed, and other public spaces can positively teem with party-seekers — especially the 18th-floor pool bar, Le Bain. (The pool is closed during the winter.) If you're looking to feel like you're in the center of the Manhattan scene, this is it.

What to do

  • Puma 2.0. If regular sneakers just aren't cutting it, head to the Puma Black Store where the company tries out its most avant-garde, contemporary looks.
  • One-Stop Personal Shop. The owner of Jeffrey calls it an "easy shopping experience," where all the items are hand-picked and associates are trained as personal shoppers for individual clients.
  • Fly Like A Butterfly. The Aerospace High Performance Center is a gym that leaves the machines behind, and clients focus on building core strength through diverse exercises like jumping rope, dancing and boxing and more.
  • Swing Time. Take a private lesson at New York's trapeze school. Make sure you reserve well in advance, as it tends to get booked solid, fast.
  • Sample. Head to the border between the Meatpacking District and Chelsea to the Chelsea Market, a small culinary kingdom in a 26-store postindustrial design gem, with amazing eats.

  • What I liked

Super cute staff, hot location, surprisingly great service.

    What I disliked

Really wish the guest elevator was separate from the one leading to the bar/club upstairs. During the weekend it was a zoo in those elevators.

  • What I liked

The hotel itself was so modern and clean. My favorite part about my experience was the location of the hotel. The neighborhood was a ton of fun.

    What I disliked

I honestly can't think of anything.

  • What I liked

I liked the Standard Grill, the bath products, the view from the room, the cleanliness of the room.

    What I disliked

The rooms are very small but the fact that you can open up the window and get fresh air makes it a bit more toleratble

  • What I liked

Tiny, yet very well designed rooms. No cheesy art on the walls, but breath-taking views and mirrors instead. A small table and a place to sit. Great "open-plan" bathroom, which actually makes a lot of sense in a hotel. The room we stayed in -- nomen omen their "standard" if I remember correctly -- was really small and our low queen bed, actually shorter than I am. Yet, it was comfortable, with nice, crisp sheets.

    What I disliked

Their food options are not great. Standard Grill did not seem very exciting. You would expect a little more from a hip hotel in the meat packing district! Breakfast was not included in the price of the room. We could perhaps live with it, but what we found really annoying is that they only offer it from the room service and then charge 20% gratuity and $4 delivery surcharge!!! Even for a cup of coffee! Seems a little excessive (especially that items on offer were very expensive to begin with).

  • What I liked

After reading the mixed reviews on the way the Standard staff treated its' guests, I was very pleased with all the interactions I had; from the curbside greeting to the front dest, to the folks in the lobby lounge area, etc. They were all smiling, friendly and helpful at the perfect level of attention. The hotel is very cool (even the elevators), and the locations was perfect for us for meetings as well as dinner (great selection in walking distance), and topping it off with a cleansing ale as my boss would say, at Hogs and Hefers!

    What I disliked

Price - the only way I got to stay at the Standard and stay within our corporate budget was through the Jetsetter deal of the day!
