Drawing on the energy of its surroundings, the Tribeca Grand offers an upscale stay at an elite downtown address. The 201 midcentury-modern rooms feel like the impeccably sleek NYC apartment of some media executive who spends half his time on planes, with textured walls, coffee table books and a goldfish that’s your pet for the night. With the trendy Church Lounge and a 100-seat theater on-site, you don’t even have to go out to run into the beautiful people who populate this ultrachic neighborhood; they come to you.

Tribeca Grand Hotel

Jetsetter review

Tribeca, a former industrial neighborhood known for its trendsetting restaurants and nightlife, is one of New York City’s most elite areas — and the Tribeca Grand fits right in. Although it opened only in 2000, the building fits in naturally with the neighborhood’s hulking old loft buildings, with a simple red brick exterior and cast iron details. (I didn’t even notice it the first time I passed.) This was the first luxury hotel in the neighborhood, and it’s become a mainstay.

Downstairs at Church Bar and Lounge, mingle with locals and guests alike.
All 201 rooms, built around an eight-floor atrium, feel like a snapshot of Manhattan apartment living: textured walls, shelving units with coffee table books and modern furnishings with a few bright accents, such as orange bedside lamps and chairs. Suites and lofts come with a Mac computer, some with editing suites (the hotel caters to the tech and film industries, particularly during the Tribeca Film Festival). Instead of the standard marble, the bathroom has a stainless steel sink and Malin+Goetz amenities — the peppermint shampoo is worth taking home.

But my favorite amenity was the two goldfish swimming in an orb-shaped vase, surprisingly enjoyable companions for the evening. The fish are apparently a huge hit, and some guests form an attachment so deep they request the same goldfish for every stay (if you find yourself so in love, ask to take little Goldy home with you — it’s free).

The service here is impeccable. My room service dinner, from a mostly American menu with nouveau touches and a nice wine list, was delivered promptly, with a courteous follow-up call.

The young, upbeat staff has plenty of recommendations of things to do in the area, but really you just have to walk out the door and wander down any side street to start discovering some of New York’s top restaurants, bars, galleries and shops.

Or simply stay in at the hotel. There’s a 100-seat basement theater that hosts private and some weekend screenings, and the on-site Church Lounge draws a clientele of both guests and locals, with a vibe that manages to strike a careful balance between hip and subdued, even on weekends, when the beautiful people arrive and the scene picks up.

What to do

  • Eat. Locanda Verde, chef Andrew Carmellini’s nearby taverna, is a local favorite that sees its fair share of celebrity clients. The menu is full of casual Italian fare, like Carmellini’s grandmother’s ravioli, and the wine list has more than 100 options. Or try Nobu, Bouley, or any of the neighborhood’s other famous restaurants.
  • Stroll. Experience the restored beauty of Tribeca’s Harrison Street row houses, once occupied by the same architect who designed New York’s City Hall. Or take a quick pic outside the firehouse at 14 N. Moore Street, where Ghostbusters was filmed.
  • Watch. The shows of Broadway are within striking distance, but also consider the nearby Tribeca Performing Arts Center. Offering a range of selections from dance to an “artists in residence” spotlight, the center has performances almost every day.
  • Sip. Terroir Tribeca, a 65-seat wine bar from Marco Canora and Paul Grieco of Hearth fame, has a selection of more than 150 bottles.
  • Shop. The stores of Soho are within walking distance, from big name brands to hole-in-the-wall boutiques. Or wander the side streets of Tribeca, for a less touristed downtown shopping experience.

  • What I liked

I loved the champagne welcome! Nice touch. The lobby is really well decorated and very warm. I also really liked the room. There are a lot of hotels that look good from their photos but look cheap up close and the Tribeca Grand did not look cheap. The french winged chair was gorgeous. The bed was comfortable and it had a good selection of pillows. The tile in the shower was also a nice touch.

    What I disliked

    I did not dislike anything.

    What I disliked

Door men need to pay attention and help with taxi service, better interior lobby lighting at night.

  • What I liked

Convenient location, continental breakfast was high quality, staff was very friendly, bar and lobby area was a nice place to be at the end of the evening.

    What I disliked

One elevator was out of service off and on all day...Lobby noise echos up through the interior courtyard (we did use the noise cancellation device built-in). The check-in staff did not know about my jetsetter amenities, so I needed to ask for them.

    What I disliked

Rooms are a bit dated and not quite "Grand".

  • What I liked

The staff are friendly, the hotel is clean and inviting, the rooms are comfortable and the white noise machines really create a peaceful atmosphere.

    What I disliked

During our stay, our room began to smell like smoke and an intense cigarette smell engulfed the room when the a/c was on. We turned off the a/c and the smell was not as bad.

  • What I liked

Service was great! My first room was noisy from the music playing in the lobby and the hotel staff moved me to a much quieter room and offered a free breakfast. I also liked coffee bar on the floors.

    What I disliked

Loud music in lobby. Rooms were small.
