The Côte d’Azur has never been short on style, and this timeless yet chic hotel is equipped with a cordial (not to mention quadrilingual) staff that’s eager to please. Pass the Rolls-Royces and Bentleys in the driveway and you’ll find a property that combines a 21,000-square-foot ESPA Spa, two Michelin-starred restaurants and interiors by Jacques Garcia (of Hôtel Costes fame), all in an 1886 Italian Belle Époque building. If that doesn’t define the spirit of Monte-Carlo, we don’t know what does.

              What we love

              • Free beach transfers from hotel
              • The heated saltwater pool’s gorgeous views and landscaping
              • Joël Robuchon’s one-Michelin-star Japanese restaurant, Yoshi, and the two-star Joël Robuchon.
              • Spacious 21,000-square-foot ESPA Spa
              • A no-nonsense trilingual staff
              • Complimentary shuttle to the private La Rose des vents beach

              What to know

              • The pool is undergoing a renovation until summer 2011
              • Not all rooms have water views
              • Not the kid-friendliest property
              • WiFi costs $25 per day
              • Guests tend to dress on the formal side; not a flip-flop hotel

              Why to go

              • Beaches & Islands
              • Classic
              • Spa

              Hôtel Metropole Monte-Carlo

              Jetsetter review

Roll up to Monaco’s hidden Hôtel Metropole on the cobblestoned and lushly landscaped driveway and you can immediately see that you’re in the realm of royalty. But discretion is an art form in jetset-besieged Monte-Carlo, so don’t expect celebrity names to be dropped during check-in.

The two on-site Joël Robuchon restaurants — one Japanese, one French — are both Michelin-starred.
The 1886 Italian Belle Époque building was given a fresh interior redo by Jacques Garcia (of Hôtel Costes fame) in 2004. Garcia brought in Renaissance, Egyptian and Napoleonic elements, with silk walls and Corinthian column façades here and rococo paintings and velvet Empire sofas there. It may sound pompous to some, but it’s actually quite comfortable and loungey, not to mention organic to its surroundings.

Still, if one whimsical brush stroke of rococo is too much for you, head to the breezy and more mod outdoor saltwater pool bar. Savor a bowl of fresh fruit or a Pimms and take in the meticulously landscaped bluebells, palm trees and magnolias that frame the views of the yacht-lined harbor and beaches below.

On-site amenities are also a selling point for Metropole. The 21,000-square-foot ESPA Spa (complete with crystal steam room and ice fountain) and two Joël Robuchon restaurants (one Japanese, one French, both Michelin-starred) up the luxury ante. Both deliver an amazing experience and impeccable service, an unusual asset on the sometimes too-carefree Med. The staff at the Metropole can arrange anything from beach transfers with bottles of rosé to 24-hour room service.

A 5 a.m. breakfast of French onion soup and a bottle of Veuve Clicquot just might prepare you for the next day in Monte-Carlo.

              What to do

              • Place a Bet. Get a glimpse of the lavish Monte-Carlo Casino, used as a location in two James Bond films, Never Say Never Again and GoldenEye.
              • Party. Down some bubbly and groove to Afro-funk and Motown tunes at the chic Black Legend nightclub, created by the CEO of Groupe Floirat.
              • Dine. After you’ve had a few meals at Joël Robuchon’s restaurants at the Metropole, have lunch at Alain Ducasse’s venerated three-Michelin-star Louis XV.
              • Sail. It’s all about the gorgeous Mediterranean views here; why not take them in firsthand? Charter a crewed yacht with CSO Yachts; prices start at about $1,000 per day.

Frirendly service by the doormen, concierage, front desk. Nice pool that was protected from any wind with nice pool staff.

              • What I liked

The decor of the common areas and the swimming pool was lovely.

                What I disliked

The airs and graces the staff gave themselves, luxury is making a guest feel comfortable and they really didn't make us feel at home. The lack of complimentary water at turn down and the lack of complimentary tea/coffee for early morning departures was surprising for a hotel of this category. Changethe management and the staff and the hotel would be wonderful!

Absolutely everything. The service was perfect and so was the room. They gave us a free entrance to the Casino of Monte Carlo and warm welcome us with our dog.

                What I disliked

                nothing

              • What I liked

Staff were great - feel of the hotel was just right. Hotel room well proportioned with brilliant use of small but sensible room divisions to address different uses but not undermine overall aesthetic continuity. The hotel also made a mistake on breakfast thus we received it for free (we tipped well as a result but they expected nothing in return.) The breakfast they drew up specially for us with whatever we requested - something quite unusual and quite indicative of the quality of the hotel - the manner in which they handled this mistake was for us a inadvertent but sincere indication of the quality of the establishment. This will be our hotel next time we come to Monaco.

                What I disliked

There might be a better way of greeting guests on foot since the driveway is long perhaps guests with bags should be asked to wait so the bellman can come up the driveway to assist. The bell staff was helpful though as soon as they saw us.

                location, atmosphere, food... staff...

                What I disliked

you must pay €25/hour to access to the spa facilities i.e. hammam, sauna... pool is a bit small and it is in the middle of city so you are looking at buildings and everyone is looking down at pool guests...

The service was amazing! The cleaning of room, the look, the view, the people, everything was great!

                What I disliked

Breakfast seemed a bit too expensive for what was offered.

              • This hotel says on its website that it offers a free helicopter transfer if the stay is longer than 3 nights. Is that valid with this offer? Also, will the pool be completed by July 1, 2011?

                Kirsten B 1 year ago
              • The pool will be open by June 2011. You will have no problem accessing the pool in July. The helicopter transfer is not included in this package.

              • I see that the pool is under renovation until summer 2011. I am looking at booking my trip during June of 2011. Is the pool area completely closed during renovations or what should I expect?

                Aaron R 1 year ago
              • Hey Aaron! The swimming pool will be open all year. However, they may be doing renovations towards the end of 2011. If you go in June 2011 you should be able to use the pool without a problem.
