Esperanza is a dramatic cliffside retreat in Cabo San Lucas that’s been drawing the celebrity set for years. You won’t find the Cabo Wabo, tequila-swilling party crew of spring break infamy here, only peace and tranquility among gorgeous pools with unmatched views of the Sea of Cortez. Raspberry margaritas, fresh-caught seafood, an aloe-cucumber facial, private decks with hot tubs and ocean views — this is Mexican living at its best.

Esperanza Resort

Jetsetter review

First things first: Upon arriving at Esperanza, I hit the largest of the resort’s many pools and, after hearing the whir of blenders at the pool bar, order a raspberry margarita. It’s not long before I’m nibbling a fruit skewer and getting a foot massage — in other words, Esperanza pampering at its best.

After a day out snorkeling or sunbathing, grab a fruity cocktail in the authentic cantina.
I’m not the only one who’s been spoiled here. Leonardo DiCaprio, Hilary Swank, and Gwyneth Paltrow have all called Esperanza home. With an upscale spa, four restaurants, tennis courts and art gallery featuring local artists, the 126-room resort is a staple on the Baja Peninsula.

The beach is of course a draw, but it doesn’t offer the powdery sand found on the Riviera Maya. People come here for the drama of surf smashing against cliffs. The lounge chairs along the secluded beach are the ideal place to take in the rocky, wild environs.

Suites and casitas are expansive and feel like private homes. All feature a private terrace or outdoor space — no one comes to such a beautiful place to sit inside — and private hot tubs to enjoy the ocean views.

Elsewhere, the four restaurants feature fresh-caught seafood in dishes like tequila-glazed prawns and mango lobster salad. The oceanfront Cocina Del Mar serves amore formal menu, with three- and four-course options, while La Terraza Americana offers lighter American fare. Wash it down with a fruity cocktail at the resort’s authentic cantina.

It wouldn’t be a trip to Cabo without a little extra indulgence. The resort’s award-winning spa is happy to comply, with 14 treatment rooms and a range of services featuring botanical ingredients. Facials are particularly nice, with choices like payaya for uneven skin tones, Baja lime for brightening, and watermelon for anti-aging. Forgot to lather up in sunscreen before hitting the beach? There’s a solution for that, too — aloe cucumber.

What to do

  • Relax. The Spa at Esperanza is a serene spot, with steam caves that seem to have been carved from rock. Try the coconut and lime body exfoliation to get ready for the sun.
  • Stretch. The resort holds yoga classes for all levels; there’s even a candlelit and sunrise option.
  • Dive. Visit nearby Cabo Pulmo, a national marine park that stretches a mile offshore and serves up parrot fish, moray eels and giant coral. The resort can also arrange snorkeling, sailing and sportfishing.
  • Golf. Cabo plays host to some dramatic oceanside golf resorts; the resort can set up tee times.
  • Learn. For an additional cost, the resort can set up any number of learning experiences — a cooking class where you’ll prepare chocolata clams, a painting lesson by a local artist or an art gallery tour of nearby San Jose’s art district.

The green Cabo margherita! The green machine smoothie for breakfast! Food was super healthy and fresh. Well appointed rooms but the villas are even more spectacular. The pools and beach are beyond tranquil.

    What I disliked

Maybe need more magazines at the pool. The lattes weren't great.

  • What I liked

The gym was superb, the pools beautiful and the grounds immaculately maintained. The service was wonderful. The rooms and the public spaces were most pleasant.

    What I disliked

The food was greatly overrated and extremely expensive. I would not have minded the expense had it been worthy of the cost.
