Secluded from the main stretch of the Riviera Maya, the Banyan Tree Mayakoba mixes Asian and Mayan touches in subtle, unexpected ways. Pagodas and private pools in every villa meet in terrain that could just as easily be Phuket: luxurious, light and designed to cater to all the senses.

              What we love

              • Rate includes buffet breakfast
              • Enormous guest villas are all over 3,000 square feet and come with a private pool
              • Elegant Mayan architecture and Asian-style services
              • Exotic spa treatments in your villa
              • Romantic, romantic, romantic — perfect for couples
              • A private outdoor soaking tub for two
              • An endless choice of dining options, from small bites at seaside Sands and modern Mexican cuisine at Oriente, to signature Thai dishes in Saffron and dinners for two aboard the dining boat, Ixchel

              What to know

              • A 15 percent hotel service charge will be collected upon checkout from Jetsetter
              • Guests come for the privacy — don’t expect a hyper-social scene
              • Villas are spread out, and you may need a golf cart ride to access the beach
              • Resort’s main pool is heated during winter; private villa pools are not heated
              • Cancun International Airport is a bit of a drive; transfers are $280 round trip
              • The property opened in April 2009

              Why to go

              • Beaches & Islands
              • Romantic

              Banyan Tree Mayakoba

              Jetsetter review

The moment the gates to Mayakoba open and I made my way down the winding paths through the jungle, I knew I was in for something special. In front of an immense pagoda, a team of hosts welcomed me to my Riviera Maya retreat and, just like that, I felt like I was on the other side of the world.

Outdoor soaking tubs are private and romantic, and come with every villa.
Past the airy, open reception areas and the many restaurants, my private villa was more like a full-service mini-resort than a guestroom. A trip to the pool? Every villa has one. Spa treatments? They’ll come to me. A barbecue? I can have a cook come over. Every need is anticipated here.

Villas are decorated in soothing grays, golds and oranges, with Asian-inspired touches throughout. A sliding glass doors frames the bedroom and living space, making the pool an immediate extension of the open living room wall, while an enormous outdoor soaking tub that adjoins every bathroom lets you soak alfresco. A concierge can set up the space with bubbly and rose petals and Banyan Tree even has an official romance department that develops packages for couples.

Unlike traditional hotel spas, at Banyan Tree Mayakoba there are no common spaces. Guests book private treatment villas, where they can completely customize the space with their choice of incense and music. Dozens of massage packages mean that there’s something new for even the most experienced spa-goer. My favorite? The Rainforest Experience, where guests walk through successive hydrotherapy treatment rooms, from a summer shower to an icy cool-down. At the end, take a dip in the Vitality Pool, which has built-in underwater lounge chairs and a sleek, calming candlelit vibe.

              What to do

              • Golf. El Camaleón Golf Club is a Greg Norman-designed 18-hole golf course in Mayakoba, directly bordering Banyan Tree. It's also the first course in Mexico on the PGA Tour, so be sure to visit between spa treatments and beach trips.
              • Indulge. Banyan Tree is known worldwide for its phenomenal spa services, and the Mayakoba Spa is no exception. Hour-long services start at $90, with plenty of multi-hour and all-day treatments available as well.
              • Explore. With eight different hydrotherapy experiences, the Rainforest Trail is designed for one person or for couples to enjoy together. Everything from an aroma steam room to a mud area to an ice fountain is part of the journey, finished off with a dip in the Vitality Pool.
              • See. Just 30 minutes from Playa del Carmen, Xel-Ha is a natural aquarium with lagoons and coves that are homes to hundreds of species of indigenous sea life and birds.

              • What I liked

Everything was perfect. The service. The beach. The pools. The rooms. Actually the rooms were better than we ever could have imagined. We had a courtyard villa and the private pool, jacuzzi and outdoor tub were spectacular. My girlfriend and I decided from now on we are planning our vacations around jetsetter promotions and Banyan Tree specials.

                What I disliked

Nothing. Except having to leave the hotel.

              • What I liked

Everything, the villa was absolutely perfect with all the right finishing touches. We especially enjoyed the bike rentals so we could go back and forth to the beach at our leisure without having to wait for the buggy. The staff was phenomenal, all had excellent english and the concierge took care of anything request without hesitation. We loved the resort, had a great time and hope to see it up on jetsetter again so we can afford to go again!

                What I disliked

We were joking that we couldn't find anything to complain about with the resort. And we really couldn't.

              • What I liked

The hotel was gorgeous, beyond our expectations. Service was courteous, prompt and always friendly and polite. I was there to celebrate my 40th birthday, and staff went above and beyone to help me feel extra special!

                What I disliked

Transfer service between the hotel and the airport seems inordinately expensive. The rate should either be lower, or there should be options provided.

              • What I liked

The room was exceptional! 3,100 square feet, totally private, private pool...what's not to love. The service was spectacular. Short beautiful boat ride to a gorgeous beach. Excellent food. Excellent spa.

                What I disliked

Not really a dislike, but just a note that it is pricy. I paid $365 a night which was a great deal, less than 1/2 the normal rate, but the services and food are top dollar. Considering this is a Banyan Tree resort, that is to be expected and everything does meet or exceed expectation, but you pay for it.

              • What I liked

Excellent Service. Stunningly beautiful resort. The villas are magnificent.

                What I disliked

absolutely nothing. We did note that the prices on Jetsetter for next year are more than 2x what they currently are, and effectively similar to rates on the Banyan Tree website.

              • What I liked

The rooms are hard to beat, especially at the price point. The concierge service is great. Very baby friendly- they even make baby purees. I also enjoyed the Eco tours.

                What I disliked

Anything that we wanted to sign up for - dinners, Eco tours, massages, etc. Were all supposedly "booked solid," however when we would pass by the restaurant there were all of 3 tables occupied. We showed up for an Eco tour that was supposedly booked solid and were the only people on the tour. The hotel doesn't know how to manage it's services.

Service. Rooms. Food. Was our 3rd visit and loved it even more. First time using Jetsetter, extremely pleased with them as well.

                What I disliked

                Having to go home.

Great price. No problems with hotel. Everything honored with no questions. Only top properties featured. Relevant & helpful information about deal & property provided by Jetsetter before booking.

                What I disliked

No ability to change plans or get refund if something unforeseeable happens

              • What I liked

My best girlfriend and I traveled to this property from January 9-14, 2012. Normally I travel to Cabo once or twice a year and almost exclusely stay at the One and Only Palmilla. I have stayed at the Rosewood Mayakoba previously and loved it but got such a good deal on this resort that I couldn't pass it up. It exceeded my expectations for sure and I loved it much more than the Rosewood. I booked the trip through Jetsetter (highly recommended as you can get an awesome deal) and we stayed in a Garden Villa. It was more than enough room for the two of us with a lovely outdoor covered daybed as well as loungers and table and chairs. FYI there is a plug by the daybed to charge your ipad or plug in your laptop. This room does not have a hot tub but does have the lovely huge private pool. We had daily visits from a very large but tame anteater in our courtyard and morning wakeups from very annoying chachalaca birds (the locals say they taste like chicken!). As far as bugs go, there were tiny ants in our courtyard w

              • All properties listed on the Jetsetter website are properties that any member of the Jetsetter staff would feel comfortable travelling to. Our best advice is to exercise safe travel practices and of course we always suggest checking the US State Department website for an up to date list of travel advisories for the area where you are traveling.

              • Greetings - I'm one adult traveling with two children (ages 8 and 10). Can we stay in the Townhouse One-Bedroom?

              • Hello! The maximum occupancy of the Townhouse One bedroom unit is three so accommodating three children in that room type would not be a problem!

              • Does the Townhouse One=Bedroom have a Jacuzzi? I do not see this option listed on the hotel's website.

              • Hello! The townhouse one bedroom does not have a jacuzzi, although it does have a private pool!

              • Hi. The hotel website lists a three bedroom townhouse, but not a one bedroom. Do you have a floor plan available? Are the other two bedrooms locked? Would it be possible to add a second bedroom? If so, at what cost?

              • Hello David! The one-bedroom townhouse listed on the Jetsetter website is the three-bedroom unit available directly through through the property with all bedrooms but the master bedroom blocked off. This three bedroom unit is not available through the Jetsetter flash sale.
