With so many grand hotels in this historically pedigreed city, it takes a lot to steal the spotlight. But the Langham — with its white-glove service and Old World elegance — sure makes a run for it. Built as a Federal Reserve Bank in the ’20s, the hotel is a British import, a descendant of Victorian grandeur. It makes for a stately stay in downtown Boston.

The Langham, Boston Hotel

Jetsetter review

Built in 1922 as a Federal Reserve Bank, The Langham Boston has a distinctly Old World vibe that's matched by its ornate interior and decadent details. The posh marble lobby reminds me that the brand got its start long before this location opened. The original Langham, a London icon, opened back in 1865. The guestrooms here certainly hark back to those roots, with gilded mirrors that hang over dark velvet sofas and foliage-patterned rugs.

But even with its British lineage, The Langham takes pride in its Bostonian banking roots, which are on show throughout. Especially stunning is a tucked-away display of archival photos and a pair of Wyeth panels, one depicting Abe Lincoln at the outbreak of the Civil War.

It seems as if someone took a gold paintbrush to the 318 guestrooms and suites and added just the right touches: ornate chandeliers, two-toned wallpaper and crystal bowls. Higher-category rooms afford the luxury of more space, and on the second floor (once the bank’s lobby) ceilings soar up to 16 feet. Upgrades to the rooms have kept the historic look fresh.

Keeping in mind the building's past, know that the Financial District location can be a bit sterile. But the nightlife in the ’hood is waking up thanks to the

hotel’s new Bond restaurant and lounge, a scintillating Jeffrey Beers-designed space with a mirror-backed bar, low leather banquettes and crystal chandeliers that drop from a vaulted red ceiling. The scene gets especially crowded on Saturday nights, so make sure you let the hostess know that you’re a hotel (aka VIP) guest if the line snakes around to the lobby.

Also of note is the Sunday brunch at the on-site Café Fleuri, which has plenty of seafood options and other New England fare. Try to pace yourself around the 12 stations, and leave room for dessert, because there’s a decadent selection from pastry chef Jed Hackney’s all-you-can-eat chocolate buffet. And after a second helping of the peanut crunch cake or Guanaja chocolate stack, you consider skipping the Freedom Trail in favor of a siesta, remember: Your room is just upstairs.

What to do

  • Indulge. The Langham’s all-you-can-eat Saturday chocolate bar serves more than 85-plus treats such as Valrhona chocolate–stuffed pretzels and white chocolate and lemon meringue tarts.
  • Visit. Take a ranger-led tour through Boston’s harbor islands to Little Brewster, site of the nation’s oldest lighthouse station.
  • Eat. Seafood purveyors James Hook & Co. make their lobster rolls and fish chowder from the day’s fresh catch.
  • Crawl. Allegedly, the centuries-old Green Dragon was where Paul Revere and Samuel Adams raised tankards of ale and talked revolution. Revere also frequented the nearby Bell in Hand, named in honor of Boston’s last town crier.
  • Wander. The Institute for Contemporary Art stages provocative exhibits, but mostly people come to gawk at the dramatic glass and metal structure, which is cantilevered over the water’s edge.

  • What I liked

Professional and friendly staff. Flat screen TV with true HD channels. Large bathroom with great linens.

    What I disliked

Room was in need of a renovation: stains on carpet, fixtures in bathtub a little ratty, curtains tattered, no comfortable chair to sit in, air system would not go below 72F.

  • What I liked

Great location -- walking distance to Faneuil Hall, Fort Point Channel area. Understated but attentive service. Wonderful pool and very large fitness center. Bond (bar) serves up great martinis. Rooms (king) were mid-sized but comfortable and clean.
