Located across the street from the historic icon that Bostonians most admire (yes, Fenway), Hotel Commonwealth is a smart starting point for exploring the city. Easily accessible to Back Bay and Kenmore Square, the property is also near the Charles River and just across from Cambridge. With 149 spacious rooms and suites that blend a historic style and modern amenities, Hotel Commonwealth is pure Boston.

Hotel Commonwealth

Jetsetter review

Hotel Commonwealth feels very much like the city that surrounds it, with a classic American style that blends the traditional and the modern. The lobby and public spaces feel a bit like a colonial mansion, with ornate carpeting, large antique-style furnishings and a staff that’s eager to help. But it’s the integration of the modern — a happening lounge/restaurant, WiFi everywhere, easy access to the T — that makes the hotel such a popular choice in this part of town.

Hotel Commonwealth's style is chic but classic, with traditional American overtones throughout.
The integration of proper Bostonian style continues in the rooms,
where classic furnishings like armoires and brass lamps are mixed with modern amenities like flat screens and even a Playstation 2 (by request). Each room has a selection of books by Massachusetts-area writers as well as a DVD player to take advantage of the hotel’s 200-title library.

All of the rooms are large for city hotels, and suites are bigger than many apartments in Boston. Fenway Rooms are 470 square feet and have views of the ball park, while Commonwealth Suites are 515 square feet and overlook Commonwealth Avenue.

Hotel Commonwealth is home to one of the neighborhood’s most acclaimed eateries (and on weekend nights, one of its busiest lounge scenes) at Eastern Standard Kitchen & Drinks. Cuisine is a mix of European and New England favorites, including mussels, hanger steak frites and a frog leg ragout. On weekends, the lounge can become a bit of a scene, which may annoy some guests but delight those looking for nightlife.

What to do

  • Walk. It's something every Boston visitor should do at least once. Explore the historic sites of Boston's colonial past on the Freedom Trail, with helpful painted walkways that circle around the city's famed locations.
  • Art. With a recent expansion into 53 new galleries, the Museum of Fine Arts houses vast, varied and revered art collections from the far reaches of the globe. (Don’t miss the Buddha room.)
  • Gulp. Neptune Oyster in the North End serves some of the city's freshest seafood, specializing in (obviously) oysters.
  • Game. Take in a game at Fenway Park while you're at Hotel Commonwealth; the historic ball park is only a short walk away, and the hotel even overlooks part of it.
  • Shop. Take a stroll along busy and historic Newbury Street, which is lined with lots of boutiques and open-air cafés.

  • What I liked

I liked how the hotel was near the T. I also liked the luxurious bed, the helpful staff, the hotel's exterior appearance and interior design, each room's desk features (with charging stations and complimentary WiFi) and the bathroom toiletries.

    What I disliked

I didn't like how the doormen didn't help guests struggling with the interior doors just feet away from the outside doors, (why bother with one set and ignore the equally large others?). Just man the outside set and then have someone inside opening the other set. I dislike minibars.

  • What I liked

I've stayed at the Hotel Commonwealth many times over the last 6 years. It's around the corner from Fenway Park so it's very convenient to stay there whenever I go to a game. Eastern Standard, the restaurant at the hotel, is fabulous. I love to eat outside and watch the BU kids walk by. The staff of the hotel is friendly and helpful. The rooms are large. The location is terrific - it's walking distance to Newbury Street.
