              Poggio Piglia

              Jetsetter review

At the end of a tree-flanked gravel path surrounded by the rolling hills where Tuscany borders Lazio and Umbria, lies Poggio Piglia. Opened in 2010 after a painstaking seven-year restoration, the retreat brings contemporary artwork, modern amenities and designer furnishings to the ancient Italian countryside.

The property has just nine bedrooms, so peace, quiet and relaxation are guaranteed in this unspoiled part of the world. Cypress and pine trees, fragrant lavender and knotted olive groves provide a heady scent, while the scenery beyond the hotel’s huge windows is equally mind-spinning.

The pool overlooks the vineyards, olive groves and woodland of rural Tuscany.
The main living area features a rustic fireplace, exposed brick details and comfy lounge chairs, plus a taste of the modern art collection that gives the restored property its fresh and contemporary feel. The in-house restaurant serves locally produced, traditional Tuscan cuisine (made with the hotel’s own olive oil) in the elegant dining room. Here again, the panoramic views are on show through the floor-to-ceiling windows, while glass tables and Philippe Starck-designed ghost chairs add to the bright and airy atmosphere.

Each of the nine bedrooms retains the heavy beamed ceilings of the original building and some feature working fireplaces. Yet despite the original features, the crisp palette of white and red gives a thoroughly modern feel. The spacious Deluxe Rooms have the added benefits of deep Jacuzzi tubs and countryside views. One lucky room even sports a romantic four-poster bed.

Thanks to the hotel’s compact size, the retreat can be enjoyed in almost complete privacy. I found the panoramic terrace a perfect place to relax and unwind with a glass of Poggio Piglia’s own wine, and the beautiful sundeck and swimming pool demand day-long lazing. Or, for diversions away from the hotel, the rolling hills of the Val d'Orcia – what you'd think of as textbook Tuscany – lies just beyond neighboring spa town Chianciano Terme. Siena, Montepulciano and Assisi are also a lazy daytrip away.

                What I disliked

nothing to complain about really-- if i had to pick something, it would be that the sound insulation wasn't great, but this seems typical in Italy

              • What I liked

The location is great for day tripping around Tuscany. The hotel has a beautiful setting and views. The breakfast is small but adequate. The bathrooms are beautiful and well appointed. The bed was firm but comfortable. There were screens on the windows, which is unusual for Europe. The staff was very helpful and friendly.

                What I disliked

At breakfast it would have been nicer to have a carafe of coffee instead of having to ask for a cup every time we wanted one. After 2 cups they charged you additional. The shower was difficult to operate and the hot water seemed to run out for three of my showers. Our room was a bit small and dark, even with the shutters open. There were no drawers in the cabinet just big doors and shelves to put clothes on, but the lighting was so bad that it was hard to see what was in the cupboard at times. The pillows could have been nicer. There is some strange rule that they don't have any air conditioning in May so some nights were very warm even with the windows open. We were on the third floor and it is a walk up, so I wouldn't take too many bags. Not for handicapped people.

              • What I liked

The location was beautiful and the hotel itself was also lovely. Staff was hospitable and very helpful.

                What I disliked

The pool was not open during our stay and the restaurant had no chef-- it would have been nice to know that in advance.

              • What I liked

Great bathrooms with jacuzzi tubs and large glass showers are ultra luxe. Friendly staff that makes terrific recommendations for dining that gets you off the tourist path. Felt like home away from home. Set back well away from the road so all you hear are the birds chirping. The best cappucinos anywhere!

                What I disliked

We went in June and since this is out in the country, you can expect to see mosquitoes. The doors in the main lodge are kept open to circulate the air, but that also allows bugs to come in. Vents in bottom of doors to rooms let in some light and noise (depending on how quiet your neighbor is when they retire for the evening). Breakfast buffet was delicious, but better care could be taken from a food safety perspective- cold things should remain cold and need to be checked frequently.

Everything. The property was elegant and beautiful; the view was spectacular; the owners and staff (special shout out to Imma and Paolo and Marta) were lovely, helpful and accommodating. My husband and I would return there in a heartbeat!

                Andrew C 2 months ago
              • Hi Andrew, All rooms are air-conditioned. The summer typically has day time highs in the high 80s. The spring is a bit cooler. Both seasons are ideal times to be in this region!

              • You do not have to eat the hotel. However, if you choose to do so, you must make a reservation. There are numerous dining options in Macciano, the closest town to Poggio Piglia.
