About your stay

By Bonjwing Lee, Jetsetter Correspondent

On the steep slopes of the Italian Alps, near the village of Chiavenna, is a small hamlet of 300-year-old haylofts, today converted into luxury cottages. "Glamping" at its very best, this unique escape offers all the modern comforts of home, plus a breathtaking mountain backdrop. But despite its seclusion, Zurich and Milan are just two hours away by car, and Lake Como and exclusive ski resort St. Moritz are less than an hour away.

What we love

  • A bottle of wine is included in the Jetsetter rate
  • Breathtaking setting and inspiring views of the Alps
  • Beautifully restored cottages with modern amenities
  • The property has its own cheese grotto and wood-heated spa house
  • Stargazing at night, fresh air and solitude
  • Roaring fires in all cabins — firewood is replenished daily
  • Heliskiing in winter
  • WiFi is available
  • The outdoor picnic area doubles as a helicopter landing pad

What to know

  • Renovations finished in 2010, and the spa house wrapped up in 2011
  • The private road that leads up to the cottages is very narrow and steep; if roads become impassable during the winter season, hotel staff will transport guests by snowmobile
  • Note that there are extra fees for using the spa house
  • Supplies can be bought in nearby Chiavenna, but some shops are closed on Sundays and Mondays, and from noon to as late as 3 p.m. every day
  • Every cabin has a fireplace on each floor, with an ample supply of firewood at the ready, but bring a jacket, or at least a sweater
