The Indian Ocean is only minutes away, but it’s hardly the main attraction at The Balé. This luxurious 29-pavilion retreat rates high for its hip factor and subtle attention to detail. Relaxation and decompression come easy here, especially at the Spa, where world-class yoga teachers share space with renowned healers.

              What we love

              • Round-trip airport transfers, a welcome drink, 15-minute welcome massage, daily breakfast and fruit, 24-hour butler service and transfers into town are included in the Jetsetter rate
              • Huge pavilions with private pool, garden, daybed, outdoor shower
              • 24-hour butlers on call
              • Holistic focus on food and constant supply of fresh, organic produce
              • Custom spa programs, including yoga, chakra healing and water therapy

              What to know

              • Resort-wide wellness focus appeals to the health-conscious
              • No children under 16 are allowed
              • Not a true beach destination — it's a 15-minute walk away (but the resort will drop you there for free)
              • Last renovation was in 2008

              Why to go

              The Balé, Nusa Dua

              Jetsetter review

There are more than 50,000 hotel rooms in Bali, so travelers have more than enough options. But for luxury-seekers who expect privacy, peace and authentically friendly service, The Balé is a clear front-runner.

Just 20 minutes from the international airport in Denpasar, The Balé has 29 minimalist pavilions, purposely designed for indoor/outdoor living. Each has a private garden, pool, outdoor daybed, sleek hand-styled furnishings and Zen-inspired touches, like orchids and indoor and outdoor showers.

Watch the Bhutan-trained head chef cook up fresh seafood in the open kitchen at Faces restaurant.
Geger Beach is walkable, but most guests prefer to stay on the property and lounge at the multilevel infinity swimming pool, which has sea views. It’s steps away from Faces, the alfresco and healthier-than–you-know restaurant run by a charismatic chef.

Upon arriving at the spa, each guest meets with a consultant to customize a program suited to his or her needs. For me, it’s all about yoga, meditation, pranayama, healing massage and energy treatments. For others it may include full-on detox programs, tai chi and martial arts. And in keeping with the wellness theme, Bliss restaurant at the spa offers cuisine infused with local healing herbs.

Although you don’t have to be a spa aficionado to fall in love with The Balé, chances are you’ll leave feeling energized and healthier than when you arrived. The ambience inspires you to surrender completely to the stress-reducing offerings at this smart lifestyle retreat. Trust me — don’t resist.

              What to do

              • Shop. No trip to Bali is complete without an afternoon in the village of Ubud, about an hour from Nusa Dua. You’ll find museums, boutiques and painters’ studios, as well as locally made handicrafts and unique gifts at the Pasar Seni market.
              • Get Out. Experience the true beauty of Bali by hiking or biking country trails past rice terraces, sacred shrines and coffee orchards. After an adrenaline rush? Consider whitewater rafting down the Ayung River.
              • Ride. Visit the Elephant Safari Park, where you can view Sumatran pachyderms in their environment and take a guided elephant ride through the jungle. The price (around $70) includes the ride and lunch.
              • Dance with the Stars. The center of Bali’s nightlife is in bustling Seminyak. Dance the night away at Double Six, an always-packed outdoor dance club on the beach. Expect DJs playing to huge crowds and standard operating hours of 2 a.m. ’til dusk.
              • Om. Spend at least one full day at The Balé's Spa to take full advantage of the wellness programs, which include yoga led by world-renowned teachers, unique classes like Water Pilates and soul-healing treatments like cranio-sacral therapy and chakra opening.

Beautiful villa with plunge pool. We loved how they had music playing when we arrived in the villa and checked us in in our room while sipping welcome drinks. Good variety of breakfast items (included in price of room)

                What I disliked

Ongoing construction across the street. Ask for a room at the rear of the grounds. Large property with good amount of stairs, may be a difficulty for some. Since it's a tropical location, we had some bugs that got in our room.

How do you write a review for such an amazing place that exceeded every one of our very high expectations? I will try by giving some anecdotes from our stay. Our experience began shortly after we booked our stay when Yuni contacted us to gather information to help our stay be as comfortable and enjoyable as possible. After flying from New York, a representative from the hotel met us at the airport with cold towels, bottled water, fresh fruit, and nuts. We went directly from there to our room where our butler served us lemonade with a lemongrass straw while we checked in from the room (a very underrated luxury as we were extremely tired and weary from our travels). My wife has an intolerance to gluten and cannot eat bread or wheat so when we went to dinner, we mentioned our room number before sitting and they immediately knew both of our names and knew of my wife's food allergy. Every meal was prepared with her intolerance in mind. The general manager, Michele, mingled with the guests every night and my

The Staff and Manager were extremely friendly and helpful - they made our stay truly enjoyable. The Pavilion was simply stunning, everything was in excellent condition and to exacting standards. The food - both the inclusive breakfasts and 'Faces' restaurant was again some of the best we have had at any 5 Star Resort globally.

                What I disliked

To be honest - nothing. Can't fault a thing.

                What I disliked

Perfect for tranquil honeymoon, not for partying and meeting people, you feel like the only guest in the hotel. For us it was perfect, just what we needed.

              • What I liked

The service was top notch. Anything we needed/requested was taken care of promptly and always with a smile.

The food at the restaurant was phenomenal. I didn't want to eat anywhere else in Bali because the food was so wonderful.

                What I disliked

Perhaps being a little more flexible in the choices for tours. I know the hotel likely has agreements/partnerships with the companies/tours they suggest, but from speaking with other visitors to Bali it sounds like there is much much more available to do than what was recommended.
