The Raleigh is different from most properties in South Beach, with a vibe that’s more Deco cool than decked out to the nines. A stay here feels a bit like a trip to the 1940s — dressed in whites one minute, casual the next. It’s all about lounging in style by a pool that’s hosted everything from Esther Williams swimming routines to Chanel’s cruise collection show. The Raleigh itself is a lot like that pool: cool, pretty and a place to be seen.

              What we love

              • Location, location, location: The Raleigh is right on Collins Avenue, putting you in the heart of the South Beach action
              • One of the hottest hotel pool scenes in Miami
              • Art Deco design that lives up to the iconic exteriors
              • Private beach cabanas for rent
              • Happening bar scene at night
              • Decadent meals at the Royal Restaurant

              What to know

              • Better suited for families than most hotels on South Beach, but it can still be quite a scene
              • As is the case with most older hotels, rooms are relatively small by today’s standards
              • Ocean Front Rooms have views of either the ocean or the pool
              • The property was last renovated in 2006 and is receiving a refurbishment this summer

              Why to go

              • Beaches & Islands
              • Design
              • Entertainment

              The Raleigh Hotel

              Jetsetter review

Unlike some South Beach properties, which can feel like kitschy fluorescent nightclubs by the sea, the Raleigh is more like a sophisticated hotel whose history speaks for itself; no gimmicks are needed.

The Raleigh's distinctive pink lounge chairs are hard to miss when you're on the beach.
When guests pull into the hotel’s lush circular driveway, they can feel transported to another era: the fabulous ’40s. The 104-room Raleigh was meticulously restored to reflect the retro-Miami spirit of the original Art Deco design. Guestrooms maintain the motif with period furnishings, kingsize beds and gorgeous terrazzo floors.

That was a time when you might be in white tie one minute but casual the next. The Raleigh plays the spectrum effortlessly and appeals to the Miami mindset: casual by day, dressy by night.

A trip to South Beach is of course mostly about being outdoors, and the Raleigh does it right. AMC lovers will recognize the curlicue-shaped pool from many an Esther Williams swimming picture. Or, if you’re more fashionista than film buff, you’ll remember the pool as the backdrop for Chanel’s 2008-9 Cruise Collection show, where Karl Lagerfeld & Co. constructed a runway atop its scalloped border.

Diehard beach fans can book a private cabana near the signature pink-and-white loungers. Private changing rooms near the beach make it easy to clean off the sand before heading back to the pool for a late afternoon libation.

At night, the outdoor dining area sparkles with tiki torches and French festoon lights, while beautiful bartenders mix drinks behind the nautical pool bar. It’s all terribly stylish — as it should be.

              What to do

              • Finding Nemo. The blocks south of Fifth Street have become a must-see in South Beach, and Nemo is the must-dine. The menu changes frequently, with copious choices of seafood, steaks, and appetizers.
              • South Beach Italian. Dining at Casa Tua, the perennially hot South Beach restaurant, is like being invited to dinner at a chic Italian friend’s beach house. The décor is impeccable yet comfortable and the food is simple but expertly prepared.
              • The High-End Life. It’s hard to pick just one at the Shops at Bal Harbour, Miami's high-end shopping haven. If your ABC’s are Agent Provocateur, Bulgari, and Chloe, you’ll find plenty to love here.
              • Linger. Take a moonlit garden tour along the lush pathways of Vizcaya Museum & Gardens, an estate constructed during the height of the Gilded Age as the winter residence of American industrialist James Deering.
              • Swing. Most travelers don’t equate compact South Beach with spacious golf courses, but nearby is the Miami Beach Golf Club. This 18-hole course opened in 1923, and it was laid out by famed designer Arthur Mills, who was responsible for more than 160 courses.
              • Dine in Style. To fully embrace the Raleigh's Deco-glam vibe, stop by the legendary martini bar, then indulge in hand-cut steak tartare or custom ceviches outside in the garden at the Royal Restaurant.

The pool area was great. Very relaxing. Kid friendly, but great for adults without them. Staff was really nice.

                What I disliked

The Garden View King was Very small - but you don't spend that much time in your room, so it's okay. Drinks are expensive, but I suppose that's to be expected.

The whole property, the rooms and bathrooms were very vintage and the floors had to be the originals which would make them 70 years old...cool. staff was on point as well

                What I disliked

Thins walls heard more then I was expecting. Also the elevator broke down...on our floor at 7 am sunday morning with the door open buzzing very loud and very consistently..pretty much ruin my whole stay but I did like the hotel

              • What I liked

The boutique style hotel with modernities that provided a great balance. Enjoyed being on the beach, but NOT on Ocean Dr. For the most part the staff was nice and accommodating, especially at the front desk.

                What I disliked

Parking was expensive and difficult- valet is about the only option - which is typical in Miami. Hotel dining options leave much to be desired. The housekeeping staff was my biggest complaint. My room was positioned right next to their supply closet (I should have foreseen the problem) and this woke me up every morning much before my planned time, as I was on vacation. I did not complain, as I did not want the hassle of moving rooms. Also, I requested a bucket of ice and 2 glasses be sent up (my only request during my stay) and it took 2 phone calls to finally receive both items and the glasses brought to me were still dirty - the only reason I needed glasses was housekeeping never replaced them. Finally, my last evening I requested housekeeping services, fresh linens and turn down service (all provided daily by the hotel but I did not receive every day) and when I returned from the beach at 4pm my room had not been serviced. I called and housekeeping told me they would be down right away to do the service an

                What I disliked
