Acclaimed designer Philippe Starck's first foray into the Los Angeles hotel scene has made the transition from hectic hotspot to laid-back Sunset Boulevard classic. The bright minimalist feel of the original Starck design is intact, but since the hotel’s 2008 makeover, it feels a lot warmer, a little more relaxed, but just as chic. The views of L.A. are still unrivaled, and the scene at Skybar is hot as ever. And while you still might see a star sipping a cocktail at the bar, it's more likely to be a confident leading lady than a striving supporting actress.

Mondrian Los Angeles

Jetsetter review

West Hollywood is L.A.'s hottest hood and its epicenter is Sunset Boulevard. And perched above that strip, on the precipice between the Hollywood Hills and the vast urban blanket that spreads out toward the Pacific, is the Mondrian.

The Alice in Wonderland design carries through to the headboards, in-room TVs — even the gym.
When Philippe Starck designed it back in 1996, the 237-room hotel was the enfant terrible of the strip; now it’s one of the grandest dames of Hollywood. The original Mondrian was the first Starck hotel I ever stayed in; I instantly loved the spare white design. The new Mondrian, redesigned in 2008, has all the Alice in Wonderland ingenuity of the original — like the imposing 30-foot mahogany doors at the entrance — but now with a new measure of comfort.

The spacious guestrooms have floor-to-ceiling windows with views of the city, hills or the sexy infinity pool. You’ll spot a huge mirror hanging opposite your bed, but don’t be fooled: It’s actually your flat-screen TV. Oversize daybeds in the guestrooms are perfect for a nap after a day of shopping. Dual-head rain showers are energizing before a night out.

The best amenity at the Mondrian, though, is its location. Stroll around the shops on 3rd Street or Melrose, then lunch at Koi. Downstairs, outdoors nightspot Skybar attracts the rich and famous, with folks queuing up early to get in. There may be a line, but with a stay here, you’re already in.

What to do

  • Hike. Runyon Canyon is the perfect place for a morning hike. It’s stunning — and a favorite of celebrities and their dogs.
  • Coffee. In a town where it seems as though no one has a real job, breakfast is a great scene. The best coffee in town is at King’s Road Café, just down the hill.
  • Relax. Treat yourself to the on-site Agua Spa's signature treatment, an Ayurvedic-based massage, which uses a combo of warm honey and organic sesame oil, followed by a rinse with warm milk.
  • Dine. The Mondrian’s restaurant, Asia de Cuba, combines Philippe Starck interiors with a trippy patio and an incredible Latin fusion menu.
  • Recover. After a boozy Saturday night, fill up on some healthy food at the Hollywood Farmers' Market, held every Sunday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Ivar & Selma Avenue.

the only problem is that you can not upgrade the room or change it even on the day of arrival. The upgrade fee was to high.

The Studio Suite was stunning and so comfortable.

    I loved it.

    What I disliked

The thumping noise of the Bar and I did feel a little unsafe with the comings and goings of people from the lobby area waiting to run into the lift. they were obviously not inhouse guests.

  • What I liked

The room was fabulous and large. Wonderful toiletries, a great view of the pool, and a comfy bed. I also loved how the woman at the front desk remembered my name the next day when I checked out, and how whenever you needed some assistance, some one immediately appeared to help out.

    What I disliked

The only drawback is that valet on a Friday night is crazy, but I got assisted fairly quickly. They definitely make their guests their #1 priority in that respect.

  • What I liked

The hotel was absolutely amazing from start to finish. The staff was incredible and by the end of our two days I felt like they all knew us by name! Our room was automatically upgraded to a top level suite with a beautiful view of the Hollywood Hills. There is no question whatsoever that I will stay at the Mondrian next time I travel to LA!

    What I disliked

Nothing stands out after the visit.
