French elegance meets Hollywood hip at the Sofitel L.A. Totally renovated in 2007, it’s now the epitome of stylish young Tinseltown. The guestrooms are modern and comfortable, and come nightfall you don't have to go outside for stargazing: Kerry Simon's inventive brasserie Simon L.A. is often dotted with sophisticated celebs, while the swank Stone Rose Lounge's floating bar is a magnet for starlets and reality TV castoffs. And if you overindulge, Le Spa at Sofitel will pamper you with a full menu of treatments.

Sofitel Los Angeles

Jetsetter review

On a corner at one of L.A.’s busiest intersections, where Beverly Hills meets West Hollywood and opposite the Beverly Center, this Sofitel epitomizes the cliché "in the middle of it all." But the Sofitel L.A. doesn’t just hitch its star to location, location, location: Sleek design, an award-winning restaurant and a hot bar make this hotel a magnet for celebs and their denizens.

Luxury King Rooms open up to views of the Hollywood Hills.
Completely renovated in 2007, the cozy postmodern decor in this 295-room L.A. outpost of the French hotel chain flows through the lobby and outside onto a terrace lined with firepits and a waterfall wall. Upstairs, spacious guestrooms are done in calming earth tones with luxurious glass-walled bathrooms featuring enclosed rainfall showers with benches and L’Occitane bath amenities. The spaces are soothing and spare, as if to help you chill you before you hit the party scene just downstairs.

Celebrity chef Kerry Simon is behind the hotel’s inventive brasserie, Simon L.A., which serves modern American cuisine with global flair to a stylish set. After dinner you don’t need to worry about crossing the velvet rope — you’re just a short elevator ride from one of L.A.’s hottest nightlife scenes, the Stone Rose Lounge, which manages to remain hot while providing plenty of room for all comers. Created by Rande Gerber (husband of supermodel Cindy Crawford), its floating bar and outdoor patio — decked out with Zen garden and cabanas — is filled with throngs of celebs, reality TV castoffs and plenty of hangers on.

Don’t worry about over indulging: Le Spa at Sofitel will help you heal with a full menu treatments, fitness center, sauna and heated outdoor pool. After a little pampering, you’ll be ready to go out on the town again, even if that just means heading back upstairs.

What to do

  • Shop. Sure, Rodeo Drive is the most famous street in town, but it’s Robertson Boulevard that makes L.A. fashionistas’ heads turn. Robertson is just a few blocks from Sofitel, and there you’ll find some of the trendiest boutiques.
  • Eat. M Café de Chaya, a popular European-style macrobiotic vegan café, serves the yummiest dishes (non-vegans agree), all without refined sugar, eggs, dairy, red meat or poultry. Try the spicy peanut kale, the crispy seitan katsu bowl and one of their delicious gluten-free desserts.
  • View. On a mountaintop above Santa Monica and facing the Pacific Ocean, architect Richard Meier’s sprawling travertine Getty Center is much more than a modern art museum, its a perch from which to take in the entire city.
  • Tour. Want to see Hollywood? Be sure to purchase the Hollywood City Pass before your trip. You can skip most lines and get discounts to the Kodak Theater Guided Tour, the Hollywood Museum, Starline Tours of Hollywood and Madame Tussauds Hollywood.
  • Gawk. If you can't get in with the starlets at Stone Rose Lounge, your best bet for getting on TMZ is a ride on their Hollywood tour. Check out the hottest spots in Hollywood, West Hollywood, Sunset Strip and Beverly Hills with camera-toting guides on the lookout and ready to film celebs making fools of themselves.

  • What I liked

Professional, very friendly and polite staff, nice rooms, good location.

    What I disliked

Valet parking is very expensive ($32 per night) and there is no self parking option. Room cleaning service was good but inconsisent in providing shower gel and bottled water (some days they just forgot to put in new shower gel and water).

  • What I liked

Flat-screen television, nicely appointed bathroom, fully equipped gym, turn down service.

    Great location.

    What I disliked

Stated above. Was given a smaller room. Had to request a room change. Disappointed overall.

Customer service was about a "C".

Lighting in the bathroom was too dim.

  • What I disliked

We requested a flat sheet (we understand the bed does not come with a top sheet) which was delivered the next morning but the maid never put it on the bed.

  • What I liked

The shower area was clean and spacious. Provided with le'occitane toiletries. The bed was comfy.

The location was central and close to many attractions, shops and eateries.

    What I disliked

The valet parking per night was $32, tip not included. The refridgerator did not have space for me to place items in. I had paid extra for a room that stated city view, but did not live up to it since half of the window was blocked by a building and tree.

Internet in the room was not free and is charged by the hour.
