              Park Hyatt Aviara Resort

              Carlsbad, California

              About your stay

              By Elizabeth Woodson, Jetsetter Correspondent

A few miles from the Pacific and 40 minutes north of San Diego, this storied Carlsbad resort changed hands in summer 2010, from Four Seasons to Park Hyatt. But everything that made it popular with families for more than a decade remains the same. At the 329-room retreat you get top-notch service, a laid-back vibe and tons of activities to keep the entire brood busy. With an Arnold Palmer–designed golf course, a spa, the beach and even a Wii-equipped game room, think of it as summer camp with a touch of SoCal luxe.

              What we love

              • Beautiful setting on a lagoon a few miles from the Pacific
              • Sophisticated but unstuffy vibe
              • Argyle, the excellent on-site steakhouse with views of the golf course
              • Romantic dinner at Vivace, the hotel's signature Italian restaurant that was awarded a Wine Spectator Award of Excellence in 2011
              • The Arnold Palmer–designed golf course is one of the best in Southern California

              What to know

              • A $25 per night resort fee will be collected by the property
              • The resort is not actually on the beach — it’s about a three-minute drive away
              • The resort fee includes a Beach Butler service that shuttles guests to and from a nearby beach; chairs, towels and toys for the kids are included
              • Some might find the rooms a little dated
              • Better for families and groups of friends; there’s plenty for couples, but expect to see lots of children
              • Minimum check-in age is 21
              • Valet parking is available for an additional $30 per night
