              Hotel Santa Teresa

              Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

              About your stay

              By Lisa Cheng, Jetsetter Correspondent

              This hotel is Jetsetter verified

Our editors have been here and it has met our standards.

In a burst of tropical rain forest on a former coffee plantation, the design-forward Santa Teresa Hotel pays homage to Brazil’s multicultural roots. Its hillside location in the up-and-coming bohemian neighborhood of the same name gives it one prime advantage: unbeatable panoramic views. And the caipirinhas aren’t bad either.

              What we love

              • Rio’s only Relais & Châteaux property
              • Design scheme reflects the city’s multicultural roots
              • Location in a romantic bohemian neighborhood
              • More than 200 species of plant and wildlife on-site
              • Spectacular views of Rio from practically every point of the property
              • The lavish breakfast buffet has a spread of five exotic tropical fruits (extra charge)

              What to know

              • About a 15-minute drive from Copacabana Beach and a 15-to-20-minute drive from Ipanema
              • Be prepared for some uphill walking — the whole neighborhood is poised on an incline
              • Bar dos Descasados closes at 11:30 p.m. — early by this city’s standards
              • Although the hotel is well guarded, nearby favelas pose some safety issues; don’t carry valuables when walking around
              • The menu at on-site Térèze restaurant is heavily influenced by French cuisine; head into town for more local fare

              Why to go

              • Romantic
              • Nightlife

              Hotel Santa Teresa

              Jetsetter review

The history of Brazil is a multicultural one, and the Santa Teresa Hotel is proud to display it. In the lobby of this former coffee plantation, a Tupi-Guarani headdress hangs on the wall below a display of Catholic rosary beads, a nod to Brazil’s varied past.

After a day spent exploring the Santa Teresa neighborhood, spend an evening by the pool.
Up a sweeping staircase, the 40 rooms and suites also draw inspiration from the native land, with materials originating from all over Brazil (golden slate tiles in the bathrooms, reclaimed peroba wood chairs). Each of the spacious rooms is punctuated with original artwork, such as 18th-century engravings or whimsical donkey statues carved out of ancient wood. Most suites have views of the surrounding mountains; because of Santa Teresa’s elevated location, the only way you could have a better view would be if you were atop Corcovado itself.

It seems fitting that such a design-conscious hotel would be in an emerging cultural hub. The burgeoning arts scene has made the Santa Teresa neighborhood — once the stomping grounds of the upper class — an up-and-comer (though it’s not quite there yet) with faded colonial facades, museums and impromptu festas spilling out onto the cobblestone streets. Across an iconic arched bridge, a tram will take you out to the clubs at Lapa for nights of dancing.

It’s easy to get caught up in the joie de vivre of Rio. When you’ve had enough sambaing and cachaça shots and doing as the cariocas (locals) do, unwind at Le Spa with a locally inspired treatment and then slip onto a day-lounger draped under a wild linen canopy.

A must-visit before you leave the hotel is Bar dos Descasados named after a boarding house for singles that once stood on the site. Today it’s one of the most romantic bars in the area, and with good reason. Under slick stone arches, the svelte and tan sip strawberry and chili pepper caipirinhas, taking in the sprawling views of Rio to the soulful rhythms of Afro-Brazilian tunes.

              What to do

              • Cachaça. A local institution for almost a century, Bar do Gomes is a step back in time, with a marble-topped bar, vintage photos plastering the walls and a variety of cachaças to kick back to.
              • Stew. Crowds pack Bahian restaurant Sobrenatural, on Rua Almirante Alexandrino, for the moqueca, a traditional seafood stew.
              • Stroll. Home to the crumbling mansion of a Brazilian heiress — it was once a salon for intellectuals and artists — the Parque das Ruinas fosters the arts to this day; the park grounds host a rotating roster of exhibitions. Next door, the Museu Chácaro do Céu houses the largest collection of neorealist painter Candido Portinari’s works, as well as an assortment of European and Asian works in a Modernist mansion.
              • Step. So striking that they’ve been featured in music videos and photo shoots, the 215 steps between Rua Pinto Martins and Rua Joaquim Silva (the Escadaria Selarón) pop with vividly colored tiles, thanks to Chilean-born artist Jorge Selarón.
