With the mysterious Red Rocks of Sedona (as well as those supposed mystical vortexes) looming large in the background, the low-key and tasteful Sedona Rouge is a smart, stylish choice in the high desert. Mercifully devoid howling coyotes, turquoise dreamcatchers and other Southwestern design clichés, this small, mod hotel exudes Mediterranean flair with Moroccan accents, all wrapped around a spa that made Deepak Chopra rave.

              What we love

              • Location away from touristy uptown Sedona
              • Observation terrace featuring red rock panoramas
              • Enormous waterfall-like showers, with vertical and horizontal jets
              • On-site spa and daily yoga classes (for an additional fee)
              • Pet-friendly rooms that open onto grassy areas

              What to know

              • An $18 resort fee per night will be collected at the Jetsetter checkout
              • Spa appointments get booked up well in advance
              • Within walking distance of restaurants and shopping, but not attractions
              • The hotel is near a highway, and some rooms face in that direction
              • Robes, bedding and some furniture can be purchased on-site
              • Complimentary parking

              Sedona Rouge Hotel & Spa

              Jetsetter review

Set among the Red Rocks of Arizona, Sedona Rouge greets guests with a stylish, modern waterfall fountain in its hip lobby. That’s the first sign that this intimate and quiet 77-room, four-suite hotel is different from the rest of the neighborhood. Sedona Rouge eschews standard Southwestern design — instead think 11th-century Andalusia — with 500-year-old wrought iron windows and Moroccan-inspired decor.

The small but sleek rooms are kitted out for comfort: Bathrooms are hung with plush Turkish towels and Oprah-approved Kashwére robes, and satin-stitched bedding is buried under feather duvets, chamber pillows and lambswool throws. Syrian chests and Moroccan side tables dance around the Mediterranean themes and, as the hotel’s name suggests, deep red accents mirroring Sedona’s natural environment are sprinkled throughout. The bathrooms are large, and the second and third floors feature huge rain showers with dual showerheads for couples. Private balconies take full advantage of the dramatic canyon views, also the daytime attraction at the hotel’s observation terrace. After nightfall, the terrace is the ideal setting for some serious stargazing.

Take a dip in the resort's heated pool in the shadow of Sedona's mysterious Red Rocks.
The resort’s heated swimming pool and Jacuzzi are surrounded by chairs and an outdoor fireplace — snag a seat early for a sunset drink. The on-site REDS Restaurant offers outdoor seating in a bamboo garden area and live music at night. Executive chef Ron Moler’s menu highlights family recipes from his native Tucson, with natural Wagyu beef and even seafood selections, including scallop tacos.

It’s the unexpected perks that set Sedona Rouge apart: the fresh fruit tray upon arrival, or the fact that dogs under 50 pounds can stay in the ground-level deluxe rooms that open to a grassy area. The hotel’s spa is also notable for a property this size, with lounges, steam rooms, Thai massage treatments, chakra yoga classes, sacral reflexology and nutrition advice.

              What to do

              • Hike. Head to the nearby Thunder Mountain trailhead and Coconino National Forest for some serious scenery.
              • Discover. Explore Sedona’s mystical side with a New Age-flavored tour of the area’s geographical “vortex sites” with Sedona Rock Tours.
              • Explore. Tucked under crimson rock walls, the well-preserved Sinagua cliff dwellings at Palatki Heritage Site are a short drive from Sedona.
              • Rejuvenate. Sedona is a major center for massage therapists, yoga instructors, crystal healers, and New Age practitioners. Book a “guided visualization” through the Sedona Rouge’s spa or the Red Rock Healing Arts Center in town.
              • View. Although there are spectacular panoramas everywhere you turn in Sedona, the best drive for views is along (the sometimes rough) Schnebly Hill Road, which climbs into the rocks east of town.

              • What I liked

The setting was beautiful. The pool and pool service were great. Meals at Reds (one breakfast and one dinner) were delicious. Staff was helpful and polite.

                What I disliked

We were a little more removed from Actual Sedona (Uptown as it is called) than I expected. I don't recall Jetsetter mentioning this and it would have been nice to know.

once we realized we weren't staying at a resort (and glad we weren't paying full price), we were extremely pleased with this chic, comfortable, well-located hotel with all the amenities. Like the Viceroy and hotels of its ilk, great care was taken with the design and color scheme in this hotel. Rich reds and Andalusian decor elements are throughout the property and it's just really pretty.

The hotel occupies a small property in West Sedona on a busy main street. It's in a commercial district, across the street from a minimall that contains a Safeway and a Petco. Next door is a doggie day care and a pet grooming spot (which, since we were traveling with our dogs, we appreciated).

Our room was spacious and private, with a small patio in a grassy area that was perfect for us. Dog waste bags are provided, and overall having dogs with us was a non-issue, which was really nice for an upscale hotel. We were really pleased with how well-planned the dog areas are.

Because we were in a pet-friendly

                What I disliked

I felt that the Jetsetter write-up made the property seem like it was going to be a grand resort, when in fact it was a very nice boutique hotel. Once I re-evaluated my expectations, I was very happy with it.

Overall ambience, the room design, the service, the comfort, room size, very quiet...

              • What I liked

Everything was perfect. The staff was friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. Our room was wonderful and spotless! Beds were comfortable and the view was beautful. Great resaturant and bar. One evening we got back very late after a day trip to the Grand Canyon and all I wanted was a drink. They were getting ready to close up but the bartender took pitty on me and poured me a lovely glass of wine on the house. The pool was very nice. I never got a chance to go to the spa but everyone I saw leaving the spa looked relaxed and happy.

                What I disliked

Sedona is beautiful but very low key. They roll up the sidewalks early so if you're looking for nightlife, this isn't the place for you. I'm not complaining at all, but my 14 year old found things a bit dull after the sun went down.

              • What I liked

Surrounding, quiet, great room service. Spa was great but wished hours were open longer at night.

                What I disliked

Food at the Reds was too salty.

the rooms were nice. the spa was also very nice.

                What I disliked

the customer service - especially at their restaurant - was lacking. they are are a 'nice' place - not great.

The style of the hotel and the rooms were very nice.

                What I disliked

the location next to a safeway was a little weird. They also need a better pool boy and more chairs with shade.

              • What I liked

Central location, comfortable beds, friendly housekeeping and wait staff.

                What I disliked

Overall property is very dated and tired-looking and tucked in next to the Safeway parking lot (which is the view from most rooms). Pool area is very small and poorly maintained with ripped cushions; trash in firepit and dingy pool and hot tub tiles. Other than having a waiting area, the spa is not really a spa (one-person steam room and one-person hot tub area!) so you really have to come in right before your treatment and leave right after. Dining room/bar area is sort of a Dennys-type environment. Front desk staff very inflexible. Couldn't check out at 11:30, even though I was spending $200 in the "spa" from 10-11am!! Concierge was unable to make recommendations for dining, hiking or anything else -- (quote: "I like everything on the list, they are all equally good"??!!). Unusable balcony in the rooms, small closet that really couldn't be used either, bathroom with low quality tilework and one small sink.

              • What I liked

Comfy bed, big shower, very nice pool and hot tub, wonderful restaurant with great French Toast, helpful staff.

                What I disliked

It would have been nice if they lit the fire by the pool at night...I was disappointed they didn't, especially because it was a cool night and was in all the hotel promo pictures.
