Enchanting visitors with the kind of genteel, Old World ambience that comes from hosting the world’s moneyed elite for 80-plus years, this classic luxury hotel 30 minutes west of downtown Phoenix is one of Arizona’s premier golf resorts. And although golf has been the Wigwam’s number one focus since it opened in 1929, the elegant Southwestern contemporary rooms, Elizabeth Arden Red Door Spa and colorful gardens all run a close second.

              What we love

              • Adobe-style architecture and Southwestern decor in luxurious casitas
              • It’s the only resort in the Southwest with 54 holes of championship golf
              • Getting pampered at the on-site Elizabeth Arden Red Door Spa
              • Warming up in the Fireplace Room, a Wigwam original
              • Sunday morning farmers market and farm-to-table fresh fare at the on-site restaurant

              What to know

              • Check-in is late, at 4 p.m.
              • Located 30 minutes west of downtown Phoenix; transfers to/from the hotel cost $80
              • Valet parking is included in the $18 daily resort fee
              • Pet-friendly; bringing a pet costs an additional $15 per day

              Why to go

              • Golf Course
              • Spa & Wellness
              • Romantic

              The Wigwam

              Jetsetter review

One of Phoenix’s original full-service resorts, the Wigwam is a true luxury classic, dating back more than 80 years. Today the property has more than 300 adobe casitas and 70 deluxe suites strewn across meticulously landscaped grounds planted with citrus and palm trees. Perhaps most notably, it’s the only resort in the Southwest where guests can play 54 holes of championship golf — a major distinction in a region known for some of the world’s most exceptional courses.

Despite its growth over the years, the Wigwam retains the vibe of a luxury vacation spot of yesteryear. With its serious old-money ambience, the Wigwam feels elegantly nostalgic, but far from stuffy. The original wood-beamed main lodge from 1919 is still intact, paying homage to the past with an adobe fireplace, authentic Native American carpets and walls hung with Western artwork.

The resort has four swimming pools, including one with a 25-foot water slide.
The guest spaces are quite large for a classic hotel, with updated Southwestern decor and luxe bedding. Traditional rooms start at 500 square feet and come with a terrace, while suites are a huge 725 square feet and come with a completely separate bedroom/living room setup, giving the feel of a private home.

Visitors aren’t likely to see any A-list actresses lounging in the private cabanas around the pools, because the Wigwam isn’t that kind of resort. It’s not up-to-the-moment hot, and it doesn’t need to be. The genteel past-meets-present ambience is authentic and can’t be easily replicated. The resort has spent decades catering to sophisticated travelers, so it’s not the stay for ultramodern design seekers.

The Wigwam is a golf resort first and foremost, with three championship golf courses (two designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr.) that feature wide open spaces and immaculate bunkers and greens. There are no towering buildings to distract golfers from their games; the Wigwam’s adobe architecture is designed to blend into the courses and not detract from the fairway’s pristine views.

              What to do

              • Play 54 Holes. Playing 18 holes at one of Wigwam’s three courses — two were designed by golf legend Robert Trent Jones Sr. — is a classic golf experience even in a city famous for golf courses. Constructed in the 1930s, when space was not constrained, the courses will delight purists with their canals, streams, lakes, bunkers, greens and wide open fairways, where shade comes from old-growth trees, not modern buildings.
              • Through the Red Door. There’s nothing like a spa day to rejuvenate the body and soul, and the Wigwam hosts a pair of Elizabeth Arden’s signature red doors. Covering more than 26,000 square feet, the Elizabeth Arden Red Door Spa is immense, with five private facial rooms, six devoted to massage and three private couples suites.
              • Farm Fresh. On Sundays the Wigwam Farmers Market sets up shop on the hotel’s front lawn, and guests can join the locals perusing the stalls selling fresh Arizona-grown produce.
              • Eat Local. Dine on farm-to-table-fresh fare anytime at Wigwam’s signature restaurant, Litchfield’s. The former Red’s Steakhouse relaunched as a locavore destination just over a year ago and has received consistently good reviews for its seasonal menu using ingredients grown, harvested and produced by sustainable Arizona farms and artisans.

              • What I liked

Great pool bar, yummy food at Red Allen's overlooking a pretty golf course. Pretty flowers everywhere. Cool pool bar. Spacious room.

                What I disliked

Room was old, in need of updating. We requested a king and received 2 queens. In-room dining food was average. Location was very removed from anything, took us 30 minutes to get anywhere. Pool was under construction.

              • What I liked

We liked the renovations, decor, food, pool, golf, spa, gym and tennis.

                What I disliked

My only complaint would be that the rooms were a little dated.

              • What I liked

The lobby was beautiful and the private pool in the Oasis wing was nice. The bell man were great, the front desk staff not.

                What I disliked

The rooms, although big, were quite barren. There was plenty of room for a dresser but one was not there. And, the "decommissed" mini bar was confusing and annoying. It's still there but not plugged in our useable to keep things cold. If it's not being used, remove it and put something else there. They will bring you a mini fridge, for $25. The fridge brought to us was in terrible shape with the area that is supposed to hold drinks on the door broken. The bathroom was nice. All and all, it was barely 3 star and, except for the bellman, the service was about 2 star. We never stay anywhere that isn't of the highest quality and compared to Camelback Inn, Westin Kierland and The Phoenician, this place was a Motel 6.
