              Moreno Hotel Buenos Aires

              Jetsetter review

It’s easy to relive the glory days of Buenos Aires at this boutique property, which is housed in a nicely restored historical building. With the Moreno’s old-fashioned caged elevator (okay, it breaks down sometimes), vintage stained glass windows, gorgeous intact tilework completely lining the lobby and hallways, and high, ornate ceilings, you feel as if you’ve been transported to the era of Art Deco. Architect Johannes Kronfuss designed the 1928 edifice, which has been declared a Buenos Aires City Heritage site.

The vintage lobby has gorgeous original tilework and stained glass windows.
The hotel’s 39 guestrooms are spacious and an excellent deal for the price. They’re decked out in streamlined black-and-white retro decor, though some are dark and experience some street noise. Features include hardwood flooring, high ceilings, and large bow windows (some rooms even have parallel windows on two sides), Egyptian cotton duvets, LCD TVs, laptop-sized safes and individually controlled heating and air conditioning. Be sure to mention your bathroom preference at check-in, since some rooms have a separate walk-in shower, others just a bathtub.

The hotel’s pièce de résistance is its wooden rooftop terrace, which has panoramic views of the city and features outdoor sofas hovering around a “Sky Jacuzzi.” The terrace also has a wide chimney where guests can enjoy the traditional Argentine barbecue known as asado together with local wines (with 48-hour advance booking). The staff can sometimes be a bit slow with requests, but don’t take it personally.

Perhaps the hotel’s best feature is its proximity to famous landmarks like the Casa Rosado (yes, the one with the balcony from which Evita implored Argentina not to cry for her). The Moreno Hotel is in the famed San Telmo neighborhood, surrounded by art galleries, antique stores, museums, restaurants and, of course, tango halls. It’s also just a few blocks from the subway. Even though the hotel’s street is a bit grungy, the area is a perfectly safe place to base yourself while exploring the historic city.

              What to do

              • Sunday Street Market. One of the best perks of staying at the Moreno is that it’s one block from one of the best Sunday street markets in Buenos Aires, at Plaza Dorrego. There are tons of colorful handicrafts, local foods and antiques on display. And of course, tango dancers.
              • Gran Victoria. One of BA’s best people-watching restaurants is just a short stroll from the hotel. Gran Victoria on Hipolito Yrigoyen overlooks the Plaza de Mayo. The staff is megafriendly, and this is a great spot for a break when sightseeing tires you out.
              • Casa Rosada. Just a few blocks from the hotel, this presidential palace (where the president still works) can be toured, along with its museum. The most famous building in Argentina is painted a striking pink, and yes, Madonna impersonated Evita on the iconic balcony here.
              • Evita Museum. If you still can’t get enough of Argentina’s most celebrated first lady, head to the Evita Museum at 2988 Lafinur Street. The place does a fantastic job of showcasing photos, articles and items that belonged to Eva, including several of the former first lady’s dresses. English-language tours are available.

The San Telmo region is great! Decor was awesome and very nice large rooms. Also, the restaurant right downstairs, Aldo's was perfect to start or end the night!

                What I disliked

The neighborhood does appear dirty w/ a lot of graffiti, but we were sufficiently warned by Jetsetter. :)

              • What I liked

The room was spacious, adorable and had a great view of San Telmo. It was perfect for two friends enjoying Buenos Aires. The staff were very accomodating, breakfast was well-stocked with a lot of choices (of the types of things you'd expect from an Argentine continental breakfast).

                What I disliked

The coupon we were provided with for the free drink at the restaurant downstairs (Aldo) seemed to be received oddly. We felt a little uncomfortable about using it because some of the staff seemed confused and/or annoyed by it. The terms on the coupon said 'one free drink', but the staff informed us it was actually one glass of house red or one glass of house white. (This is less to do with the Moreno, but moreso to do with maybe the fact that the Moreno could coordinate with the Aldo a bit better).

Great location with plenty of great restaurants near by. Great room with lots of space. Fabulous roof top terrace.

                What I disliked

Long time to check in on a busy weekend, didn't get our room until 3.30pm. However, when checking out at midday, other guests managed to check early. Every room is different, so i guess it's just the luck of the draw.

Huge rooms. Breakfast on the roof. English-speaking staff.

                What I disliked

Car service they used isn't the most reliable. Slow to respond to email requests.

The room was in excellent condition, the staff was amazingly friendly, and the location made for easy walking to many great sites.

                What I disliked

There needed to be more mirrors... We only had one small one which was in the bathroom and made it difficult when two singles girls try to get ready!

Great location - close to everything but in funky San Telmo so you feel like a local; rooms are extremely spacious.

                What I disliked

The included breakfast was very basic but that's a minor concern since the value was still excellent.

rooms are very charmed and the location is the best for walking distances; Restaurant is a mayor factor.

you cant charge to your room... while you are in the restaurant.

              • What I liked

The room was very modern and spacious, the staff were lovely, the roof deck very relaxing and the feel of the hotel was warm and friendly.

                What I disliked

No chance of a late checkout because its so small and as a woman by myself, i did feel slightly unsafe walking around the area at night. (However the lovely staff will order you a taxi whenever you need it!)

              • The Loft includes a living room with a wooden floor. It has a big sofa, an armchair and a working desk. There are no stairs to climb to a second level. It is the name of a larger room type.

                Rus Y 1 year ago
              • An en-suite bathroom just means that there is a bathroom within your Loft. Both of the room types we offer include an en-suite bathroom. Several of the rooms may have a separate bathtub and walk-in shower.
