              Villa Mistral

Saint John Island, US Virgin Islands

              About the home

              By Dennis Sarlo, Jetsetter Curator

No waiting. This home has instant booking.

              This hotel is Jetsetter verified

Our editors have been here and it has met our standards.

The Skinny On St. John’s southwestern coast, this five-bedroom beachfront home overlooks the rocky shoreline of Hart Bay. Villa Mistral’s location means ocean views and omnipresent breezes – the potted plants sway, the curtains billow – and you could easily imagine days spent doing absolutely nothing but kicking back and taking it all in.

The Look On the outside, Mistral – with its pillared balconies, columned terraces, arched windows and marble pool decks – has an Italianate feel. Inside, it’s less Amalfi Coast, more eclectic: Two of the beds are Balinese, as is the nine-foot slab of polished wood in the Great Room, while mahogany furnishings throughout were inspired by the owner’s home in South Africa (and custom-made in New York). There are other African accents as well – grass mats, coconut tree bowl drums and wall hangings – and local shells and rocks make an appearance in the kitchen and Great Room. The overall feel is arty without being overdone, organic but refined.

Would Suit Art buffs and globetrotters will appreciate the home’s diverse collection of furniture and objets d’arts. With equitable sleeping quarters, the villa is also ideal for a couples’ getaway.

Room to Nab All five bedrooms have en-suite bathrooms and ocean views, but the call dibs on one with a four-poster bed draped in gauzy white netting.

The Wow The Great Room, with its liquid copper-painted cathedral ceilings, boat-like hammock and gorgeous wood furnishings, has no shortage of conversation pieces – plus, it has huge picture windows that look out on the bay.

              • The game room has ping-pong and pool tables

              About the area

Nearly two-thirds of St. John is protected national forest, making this tiny isle, which stretches just nine miles from coast to coast, a pristine wonderland for hiking, swimming, diving and snorkeling. Cruz Bay is a five-minute drive away, but other parts of the island — from the sugary beaches of the north shore to the secluded south shore and tranquil Coral Bay — are worth exploring. And St. John’s small size means it’s infinitely navigable — though you’ll want a 4X4.

              What to do

              • Eat. The homey, European-style La Tapa is one of the island’s best restaurants. Be sure to get the paella, for which the place is rightly famous. ZoZo’s is known as much for its views as it is for its Italian fare. Reserve a table for sundown and enjoy a vista that reaches all the way to the lights of St. Thomas. For an experience right on the water, visit the Waterfront Bistro in Cruz Bay, which specializes in French cuisine with Caribbean touches.
              • Drink. Woody’s is a St. John legend, drawing locals and visiting celebrities alike for drinks and good times. For a classic Caribbean cocktail, stop by Joe’s Rum Hut.
              • Snorkel. Trunk Bay is one of St. John’s most beautiful beaches and even has a snorkel trail with plaques to tell visitors what kinds of wildlife and reefs they’re swimming past.
              • Hike. St. John has many great hikes, but Reef Bay Trail is consistently voted one of the best in the Caribbean. It includes a unique walk past some of the island’s original petroglyphs.
              • Carnival. Like the rest of the Caribbean, St. John goes wild for Carnival; expect a serious island-wide party over the course of the last two weeks of June, leading up to the fourth of July for Jouvert.

              How to get there

Rental Car: The villa is located in a private and secluded area. It is highly recommended that guests rent a car for the duration of their stay. • We stayed in a Villa across Hart Bay from Villa Mistral 3 weeks ago. It looked amazing. The Bay is rocky and rough, but beautiful. The Villa is a quick ride from Cruz Bay, where there is a great, modern grocery store, the Marketplace. Would recommend a 4WD vehicle, as you really need a car here.

                Louise B 1 year ago
              • Is it possible to organize a personal chef who can also buy groceries? If so, what would the charge be for making 2 meals per day?

                Ronak D 1 year ago
              • Dear Ronak, The concierge service could certainly assist in purchasing groceries during your stay. The cost, however, would depend on a variety of factors (including kind of food and number of people). Thanks!

                Kayley S. 1 year ago
              • Does the property restrict the Villa to only 2 guests? With 5 bedrooms I would expect you could fit/invite more than two people in the house.

                Reshma K 1 year ago
              • Villa Mistral has a maximum occupancy of 10 people. Our rates are quoted for 10 people.
