On a secluded half-mile stretch of shoreline west of Grace Bay Beach, Stargazer is straight out of MTV’s Cribs. The sprawling three-building property houses a full-size ballet studio, turtle-filled grotto and private movie theater — and that's just the beginning. Amid garden-filled grounds, find a tennis court and a dramatic infinity pool. A sauna (for post-match sweating sessions), game room and collection of autographed sports memorabilia (including a set of boxing gloves from the Thrilla in Manilla fight between Joe Frazier and Muhammad Ali) round things out.

There are also all the normal things you'd expect to find in a vacation home: An airy great room, with vaulted ceilings and wicker and rattan furnishings; an elegant dining room for ten, with ocean views; and six bedrooms spread among the main house and outbuildings. And despite the priceless collectibles and extravagant chef-prepared meals, the place has a comfortable, lived-in vibe. Most importantly, perhaps, everyone here gets treated like royalty.

About the area

Exploring Providenciales, Turks & Caicos’s most developed tourist island, is a bit like falling down Alice’s rabbit hole: The place is under British rule, but the American dollar is king. Traffic moves on the left, but the steering wheels in most rental cars are on the right. And you won’t find a single fast food restaurant: They’re banned. Grace Bay Beach — the only real shopping and dining strip — has welcomed several resorts in recent years, but all are tasteful. This isn’t a nightlife destination, and nearly everything closes by 10 p.m.

What to do

  • Eat. You may smart when the check comes, but it’s hard to beat Anacaona restaurant at Grace Bay Club, right above the beach and candlelit at night for atmosphere. Have a drink at the resort’s Infiniti Bar, reputedly the longest in the Caribbean. To sample the region’s national dish, conch fritters, hit the low-key, pastel-painted Da Conch Shack. The sea snail also comes as ceviche in a tangy salad if you’ve had enough of the deep-fat fryer.
  • Drink. Dust off your best caftan and join the slick New York crowd at the Gansevoort hotel on Grace Bay for Drunken Lobster cocktails (they’re exactly as advertised).
  • Snorkel. The water around Turks & Caicos is remarkably clear and colorful, in part because of the crushed pink coral sand bottom. There’s much to see — including many vibrant fish — just offshore, making this an excellent place to introduce the kids to snorkeling. You can cover the string of reefs to the left of Stargazer’s beach in about 30 minutes. After that, try Bight Reef, Smith’s Reef or the waters in front of Coral Gardens resort.
  • Dive. Turks veterans Dive Provo offers a variety of scuba expeditions — expect to spot reef sharks and rays, as well as a variety of multicolored tropical fish weaving through the coral.
  • Explore. Providenciales is one of only eight developed islands in the Turks & Caicos community, at the southern tail of the Bahamas chain. Exploring the outer islands is a wonderful way to spend a day.
